It's less about the cat adapting to human ways and more about trying to bridge the the gap in a way that is comfortable for both of them. Cat paws are delicate things, and she was definitely a more delicate cat to begin with. It was like foreigners taking some name that would be easier for people to say - it was a trash arrangement because people were too lazy to learn how to say their name correctly.

"Would hope you'd swat at me if I did somethin' wrong - won't learn otherwise." Though when it came to cats he was pretty good at picking up on their body language and not pissing them off. He'd hope that she'd still chastise him when he made a mistake either way.
