Were Della to dive in without saying so, she would have treated her without mercy. The features of her face soften and she presents the pieces to her as she places them on the board. The first was a nine on the front row. "These are foot soldiers, they can only move forward and take an opponent's piece moving forward." A single piece to her left. "The angle goer, this can move in any direction diagonally." And another in the second row on the right. "The flying chariot, this can move in any direction ahead, below, and to its sides." Two on the corners. "Lances. They can move any step forward." Two more closer to the middle. "Laurel horses. They move forward two and one to the right or left. These are the only pieces that can jump over pieces and does not take any piece that it moves over." Two more closer to the middle. "Silver generals. They can move one space in any diagonal direction, or one forward." Two more, the ones closest to the middle. "Gold generals. They can move in any direction except back diagonal." And finally, the last in the middle. "The Jade General. He can move one space in any direction. The game is lost if he does not have a move that will end in his defeat."
She smiles a little and sets the pieces for her as well. She's getting excited. No doubt she would play poorly, but there is a lot a person can learn in how they play. Would she be aggressive? Passive? Will she be able to threaten her Jade General? With someone like Della, who knows!
