[closed] I feel like we're forever every time we get together
Who: Koumyou Sanzo, Devero
Where: Sleeper 3-C
When: Backdated to sometime in between the March platform and mission 11.
What: Koumyou finally meets Devero's new robot pet, and gives him his present!
Warnings: Rampant, unchecked adorableness.
It's a pretty ordinary, random day. Chores have been done, mischief has been had, and Koumyou finds himself with free time. Which means, of course, it's time to seek out Devero.
He pokes around likely spots on the train, but doesn't find him. Not in the music car, not in the gym, not in the library, not in the kitchen...
Maybe their room?
Koumyou boops his ticket at the door to open it, and sticks his head in. "Dev-chan? Are you in here?"

Koumyou boops his ticket at the door to open it, and sticks his head in. "Dev-chan? Are you in here?"

"That's already so cute!"

The drone chirrups again and makes a deliberate sweep of him with its camera, mapping out key identifying features like his facial structure and somatotype.
When it's done, he gestures at Koumyou. The drone's camera-eye follows the movement of his hand and then stops when it detects another face, looking up at Koumyou now. "This is Koumyou Sanzo, and I want you to register him as a secondary user. Mark his audio and visuals." In a quieter voice to Koumyou, he adds, "Say something to it. At least a couple of sentences."

There is a ring of colored light around the drone's camera-eye, which from boot-up until now have been a bright, pleasant blue in counterpoint to the metallic purple of the drone's shell. But-- still looking at Koumyou-- it flashes suddenly over to yellow and starts to blink. An error message pops up in the control panel in Devero's Interface.
"--Oh, right." (The drone swivels its head back around to fix on him.) "Uh, user Koumyou is teknull. Dismiss error." The LED 'iris' goes back to blue as Devero closes the message in the control panel as well, then explains, "It was looking for your EMID to register."
no subject
Certainly they don't get registered as a user? One would think. If most of the teknulls on Dev's world are the hostile ludds. Or that's at least Koumyou's understanding of the situation, anyway.
"At least it let you work around it, hm?"
no subject
He'd much rather a pet that he can put into standby mode for a couple of weeks if he needs to.
That said, "I'm actually kind of surprised it let me do so that easily, any tekull who'd be around a companion drone would still have a baby bracelet-- er, an ID wristlet."
no subject
You're precious.

The drone looks back and forth between the two of them as they talk. It's not following the content of the conversation so much as their tone and body language. It chirrups again and sends Devero a query.
He chuckles as he reads it over. "--It wants us to rate our current affect. Would you say your mood right now is positive, neutral, negative, or other?"
no subject
And then, back up at Devero, "Have you thought about a name for it yet?"
no subject
He boops his finger in midair twice-- positive for him, positive for Koumyou. The little robot's shutter blinks as it assimilates the response. Calibrating...
It looks back up at Koumyou, aware that it's being addressed. It emits a little brrt! sound in response.
Devero, meanwhile, looks utterly taken aback by the question. "Uh. No. Not at all, actually..."
no subject
By certain definitions of excellent.
But he did name both Genjo -- twice -- and Ukoku, didn't he? Not that this is half so serious.no subject
(The drone queries his emotional state again. Devero selects 'other'.)
"...What would you call it?"

no subject
It's a little too big to fit easily on one palm, though, so Devero brings the other under it to scoop it off the bed, before offering it out to Koumyou. "Here."
no subject
Rather than hold his hands out for the little bot to climb onto, though, he tries to pick it up by the sides, just behind its front 'legs', like one might do for a small animal.
And he looks at it very keenly for another moment after that, and then declares:
"Sir Beepers!"
no subject
The priest's suggestion makes Devero sputters with laughter. "Sir Beepers," he repeats, testing it out. The sound of his voice makes the drone swivel its head around to look at him. "What do you think?" he asks it.
The only response he gets is another buzz and a notification from the drone's control app asking him to resolve its error state.
no subject
He's just going to... going to try to hand it to Devero, now. Here. Save the technology.
no subject
"I-- I guess it didn't like that very much?" Devero says uncertainly.
no subject
Unless Devero decides he doesn't like that name, that's the name now.
no subject
"Yes," he says aloud. "Register nickname." Sir Beepers it is!
"Mode lock," Devero murmurs, then reaches over his shoulder with the opposite hand. The drone stays in its cam configuration, but follows his hand as closely as if it was standing on his palm as he brings it down in front of him. He holds it up towards the priest.
"Koumyou didn't mean to scare you," he tells it, then looks up at Koumyou. "You won't try to hold it like that again, right?"
no subject
He doesn't want to break Dev's pet!
"Maaah, maybe I'll get an animal too. Something that can avoid dying."
Because of course that's a concern, being from where he's from. Any pet of Koumyou Sanzo's has to be able to defend itself or at least escape danger.
no subject
It blinks its light ring at him, but that's the only response. Devero lowers his hand down to the surface of the bed, telling the drone, "Free mode," as he does. After he takes his hand away, it extends its extremities again and cuts its lifter, dropping lightly to the surface of the bed.
"Oh?" Devero asks, looking from the drone to the priest. "Do you have something in mind?"
no subject
Having a pet is not something he's ever seriously considered.
"But it needs to be able to fight or flee, or both, from danger."
Otherwise there's not much point in him getting attached.
"So maybe something demonic? Ukoku told me there's demonic monsters in the Far West who take the shape of animals..."
Which doesn't necessarily scream 'pet', but it also doesn't scream 'helpless'.
no subject
He has to ask: "You think you'd be able to keep it from causing too much trouble?"
no subject
It's not the most reassuring response, but hey, it's honest.
"I'd tell the train I want one that mostly just wants to be... whatever form it's in. Maybe a kitty cat?"
So, not one just using the shape to sneak around, but one that is content to just, be an animal. A very smart, supernatural animal.
no subject
"I'm certainly not going to stop you, if that's what you want to do," he says. "If I have a companion, it's only fair you get one too, if you really want one."
Speaking of companions, Sir Beepers has started exploring the bed, at least around where Devero sits. It's picking its way carefully across the yielding surface of the blanket, its pointed limbs leaving little divots in a trail behind it.
no subject
Particularly if it's a pet that's smart enough to know when to get out of dodge, and has the abilities to do so.
no subject
He presses the priest's bony hand and then releases it, sitting up again. "I think you should go for it."
no subject
For better or worse, the train is going to have a demonic monster in the shape of a kitty cat.
"--Oh! Speaking of buying things," Koumyou reaches into his ARMs band, and pulls out a box. It's clearly one of the shipping boxes the train delivers things in. It's been opened, so Koumyou could make sure it was the right one to gift, and then taped shut again.
He holds it out to Devero. "I got you a present!"
no subject
"That's right, you did," Devero says, with a smile that's almost... shy? He takes the box, weighing it in his hand for a moment as if he just wants to savor that fact that he's been given a gift at all.
When he opens it, he finds inside a device that looks identical to the ones in the 'bookcase' in his cubby. His eyes do the flick-and-change-focus thing that means he's looking at something in his Interface-- and then his face lights up.
"Neohumans? You got me Neohumans?"
no subject
His memory isn't always terrible, and rarely ever so bad as he claims.

"I try to... show you how I feel, even if the word itself is still actual nightmare-fuel for me."
Like, he's gotten a lot better since his first panic attack about it on the ferris wheel, but. It's slow.
And there are other ways to express how he feels, like remembering a silly little detail from their first meeting.
no subject
Devero's ignoring it for the moment, though, much more interested in the man in front of him. Eyes closed, he reciprocates the kiss, a smile on his lips when they separate.
He fishes out the cartridge and drops the box onto the floor beside his bunk, holding the item in both hands and rubbing its casing with his thumbs. There's wonder in the motion, as if this was some exotic gift from an alien world and not bog-standard media storage. He's still smiling when he looks back up at Koumyou.
"Even if you can't say the word, I know," he says, eyes shining. "You show me every day, and I see it. Thank you."
