The basics are that there is a small tank of gas in the back of the fridge. The gas travels up through these coils that lower the temperature and it changes into a liquid. The warm energy disperses in the back, and that liquid goes through a part called an expansion valve which turns it back into a vapour. It's the reaction of turning from gas to liquid and liquid back to gas that causes the gas to get cold.

[ He taps the inside wall. ] Behind these panels is where those parts are, they're covered up so you can't see them. So when that vapour comes in, it absorbs the warm gas in the fridge and sends it back down to the tank, or compressor if you will. It's a series of mechanical and chemical transformations that changes the temperature. That happens constantly because it's a cycle, so as long as the fridge works, your food remains cold.
