Alice thinks that the only time she saw him anywhere close to happy was when he was busy tinkering on the train for the first time.. But other than that? She only thinks she has seen him in various shades of annoyed, bored, or nervous in some way.
"Then go. No one is stopping you." Certainly not Alice. And - for once - not the train either. Imagine that. "I can't think of many worse places to be stuck than this stupid train, anyway."
So whatever is awaiting him back home.. well, it's got to be better than being stuck in this cramped little thing.
