A New Platform [Intro Post March]

PLATFORM STOP: MONTH 17
(QUICKSAND)

BEFORE ARRIVAL

"Good morning Voidtreckers, it is day 1 of the month of Quicksand. Points have been updated on the system."

The voice of the Voidtrecker Express welcomes passengers at the same time as always, sometime after breakfast. With points updated, everyone can spend the morning shopping. Most people will be expecting the second announcement that comes a few hours later, as the colours of the void outside the windows blur more and more.

"Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. The weather is cold and damp. Exit from void in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."

A lurch and a jolt, and the windows fill with the fog that means they are at a platform.

ON THE PLATFORM

1. THE ARRIVAL

At first, all your character can see is steam billowing around them as they come to their senses. But as their eyes adjust, they find themselves on a platform.
It is cold, a slush of ice and rain on the ground underneath their feet. It's not currently raining though. The platform is made of black cobbles, slippy under their feet, dark stone gates serving as barriers giving the impression of a severe and grim place.

They stand in clothes not their own, in a style they might not even recognise. They're carrying a rucksack on their person, and for a moment it seems to just be them, alone on this platform. Before the fog starts to subside, and they'll see they're one of eleven figures: all facing the tracks, and all dressed in cargo trousers and hoodies, the latter in one of four colours. Purple, red, blue or orange.

But then there's a roaring sound to get their attention, and out from the fog arrives a train. A sleek black, it it reads The Voidtrecker Express in gold lettering on the side. Every one of the doors hiss as they open automatically, and out pours a strange assortment of people, over a hundred at least. Some are human, some less so, with a majority wearing the same hoodie of four colours as they do, though some sport outfits in a variety of styles.

The train doors close behind them, and the vehicle is cloaked in the same fog that hides the world beyond the platform. A group of people head towards the gates of the platform, their expressions blank and unaffected by their surroundings. Ansem, Connor, Curufin, Elle Days, Freddy Fazbear, Margulis, Murderbot, Potato, Vexen, Will Stanton and Yota They disappear through the barriers, but no one else can - all people can do is wait until the train re-emerges, finishing whatever changes it's making.

2. BOARDING THE TRAIN

After a short time, perhaps ten minutes or so, the fog clears and the doors hiss open again. Everyone will feel a pull when they do, a need to board, and those from the train may encourage new arrivals to board. This feeling grows into one of apprehension and turns worse the longer they stay off-board.

For those that do board, they may find themselves in a few different carriages, but most likely the standard coach. A row of seats sit available, with a few tables between each. More likely than not, some cookies have been set out with jugs of drink, and cups available for pouring.

For those that don't, however, they're likely to attract attention if they're spotted. And if that fails... an unfortunate end will await them.

3. DEPARTURE

Do a little exploring, if you will. But people will have half an hour total from the train's arrival before a second horn sounds, encouraging any stragglers taking advantage of the fresh air to board. After five minutes from this, the doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, but they may wish to brief their new companions.

The train begins to rumble with activity, and the platform starts to disappear into a fog as the voidcraft moves. A female-coded artificial voice echoes throughout the train.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express. Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points, and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog-filled sky.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated. Entry into Voidspace in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."

A shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding. As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady itself. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever-changing colours.

Welcome to the Void.

ON THE TRAIN

1. EXPLORING

With nowhere to go but through the train's carriages, this is a good time for newcomers to explore. For veterans, it's back to your everyday life aboard the Voidtrecker Express.

¤ New arrivals will notice a screen and console in every carriage sharing the same message, and a stack of leaflets in holders by them offering further information to the curious (see 'Publications'). There are lavatories available on each carriage on one end, with another console with a deposit box under it at the other. This is the train shop.

¤ It'll take some time for newbies to figure out the layout, even if there's only two directions to go in. Go one end, and you'll find the food stores and washing utilities. This month's key ingredient is pineapple, and you're sure to bump into others curious about what's in the stock.

¤ Go to the other end, and you'll find the sleeper cabins. Plaques sit on the wall by each door with the names of their occupants, and one of these will be yours - hopefully, they'll figure out that swiping their ticket against the doorpad will open it up to them. In most rooms, the occupied beds are obvious, leaving the spotless, empty spaces for the newcomers. Room is tight, but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and, the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches full of spare blankets and pillows.

¤ At the farthest end in this direction is the luggage carriage, where passengers who have bought items from the train shop will find their purchases. There are also medical kits for every one, each labelled with their full roster name. These are scattered around the luggage carriage in various suitcases and bags, but there's also a small fridge and kettle here with bottled water, for those who want a quiet drink.

For those of Purple team who go looking for their reward they will find simple boxes of cupcakes to share out. There's a cupcake for all of purple team, even the new arrivals, share in your new team's success!

2. ACTIVITIES

But of course, there's also everything in-between those two directions, and the people in them.

¤ Areas of note will be the training gym, where there's always regulars training to pass the time. There's a training board offering services, but maybe you'll find someone who catches your eye in here. Or even its gear?

¤ Is your character used to the appliances to be found in the kitchen? Depending on when your character wanders in, they may find someone testing out a recipe, preparing for lunch, or even dinner time.

¤ The library offers a quiet place, with a fair selection of books from fiction to non-fiction. Is your character interested in learning more about the void? Picking up an action or adventure book? Wow, there sure are a few magazines.

¤ There's also media to consume, from the games car, the cinema, to the arts carriage. Ever played a virtual reality game? Wanted to learn how to fly? Have you seen a screen of moving pictures? There's now documentaries to be found in the cinema's catalogues, from How To programming, Void-related topics, and sports.

3. REST AND SLEEP

¤ Time is difficult to track in the void, even with the few clocks around showing a 21 hour time. But the windows allowing a view of the kalediscope void will shift to a pitch black once the time reaches 12, and keep for the rest of the day.

¤ Breakfast, lunch, and dinner time is usually announced by whoever's cooking that day, and when. Sometimes it's decided by the team chores; other times, it's decided by who wants to be cooking.

¤ But sleep eventually comes to all, even if they don't want it to. When 21 hours have finally passed on the train, all passengers, whether they need sleep or not, will see black - only to start a new day in their cabin beds, with the sound of the train's automated voice greeting them with a 'Good morning' message.

The Arrival

Alright, where the bloody hell am I?!

[The girl with backwards cat ears yells not at anybody specific, she's just. Generally yelling. She's not panicking or furious, just seeming very annoyed with her current circumstances.]

Peter Parker

[personal profile] hashtagparkerluck 2022-03-01 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
Waking Up...

Peter has a really strong sense of Deja vu. He recognizes the platform and frowns as he looks down and sees a familiar pair of hiking boots and kaki pants. How long as he been gone for now? He glances over at the other people sitting on the platform with him and then pokes the SCA strapped to his wrist to see if it'll connect to the train yet and tell him... something.

Even though he's expecting it, the noise from the train still startles him and he drops the hoodie sleeve back over the device. "This has really gotta stop happening..." He grumbles to himself, pulling the backpack further up on his shoulder and moving closer to the train.

Back Onboard

So apparently he's been gone for a really longtime this time. Just about six months by his estimate. How that happened he's not entirely sure but it doesn't stop the intense wave of guilt over it. He opts to not think about that though as he's sure he'll just spiral into a panic because where the hell has be been on this time? In Stasis? Why?

Right, he wasn't going to think about that. He's found himself in the luggage car and opening suitcases incase some of his previous possessions are miraculously still around.

Sleep L3 B

Peter knows how this works and uses his ticket to gain access to the cabin. He glances around and takes the only empty bunk left, setting his back pack on the foot and climbing into just rest for a minute. He's got a lot to think about and this seems about a good a place as any.

Platform Arrival

You know what Hunk doesn't like? Being abducted into space on a mission to save worlds. What just happened? He was abducted into space in order to save worlds.

This isn't all true, though. Saving people? Feels great. Freeing the oppressed, helping the hungry and homeless. Bringing peace to wartorn lands? Hunk lives to see the aftermath of that.

Just the whole lead up to it is a lot and he's sure someone else could do it much better. But that doesn't stop his situation now! A boy in a purple hoodie on unsteady feet, suddenly transported from his comfortable room, new after his old home was destroyed in the Galra invasion of Earth. See? Nice new room. And now he's here in a cold, wet, depressing, and slightly creepy place? Come on! Not cool, universe. Not cool.

"Um... Hello? Can someone give me directions to a communications device. Or somewhere not here? Please. This isn't my favorite thing."

The Train

Hunk doesn't have a whole lot of choices in being here, does he? Well, okay. It's a lot? But he can handle a lot. He guesses if people still need him. But he'd love to be back home with his family. Wouldn't everyone, though?

He first checks out his cabin, his name plastered to the side of L3:E. It's... small. Way smaller than his room on the castle of lions. Where is he even supposed to put his nerd stuff? He guesses the journey home in the lions was just as cramped and didn't even have a mattress. But it's still a little disappointing. Oh well.

What's nice though? They're not serving goo. The vegetables are top quality, the kitchen has decent cooking tools and a pretty good oven, he is already going through the recipe cards with light in his eyes. "Oh man, even if this ends up some kind of alien pineapple, if it's convincing? I'll embrace it. And look at all this stuff. I could do a different meal almost every day of the month! It was always really rough to get good ingredients in space."

The lab car is also pretty amazing. He wanders around it, taking stock of supplies, gently eyeballing other people's inventions and knowing better than to touch but these look so cool. Okay, there are a lot of high points that he sees already. "Wow, everyone here's been really busy, huh? What type of materials do we have access to here?"

Train Take-Off

Okay, now that he has already 'settled'... kind of... he's ready to experience this whole 'wait for the train to take off' thing. And you know what? It's terrible. He didn't predict it would be so terrible. He had a tender stomach that got used to some pretty severe space combat. Motion sickness that often caused disaster for whatever enclosed area he was in. Stress-related intestinal issues that made that girthy belly of his become an orchestra.

But you know what? The train made this choice. It's gotta deal with him. And he might have moved beyond the point of throwing up at the way it speeds up? He comes damn close to revisiting it as a wash of brilliant colors slide past the window in luxurious nauseating patterns.

"Please tell me there's some kind of void Dramamine in the medical car? Space tums? I was not fully prepared for a train to travel with- nng..." hold on, he has to center himself, swallow. We good? ....Okay we're good. "Travel on literal nightmare fuel. I mean that out there causes bad dreams and hallucinations, right? Literal. Nightmare. Fuel."

The bad.

Najaran bounded out as she usually did on platform days. She was exhausted still, but it was one of the few times she could let her larger friends out of their cards to play.

Her heel caught in the slushy mess as she jumped out of the train and she fell to the ground, skidding on her now very cold rear. She looked up to complain and saw the people leaving.

Saw Curufin leaving.

It wasn't quite as bad as when Duo left. But it still hurt. A lot. Had something happened when he tried to go home? Had he tried to go home? Why hadn't she talked to him more before?

She was going to miss him.

Someone might want to remind Najaran why it is a bad idea to sit in the slushy cold wet for too long. Because Goligan knows why she is upset, and isn't going to say a word for now.

The usual, extra usu.

Once Najaran finally got herself up, she went, as usual, to the furthest end of the platform. Less food with her this time than usual because she'd been too exhausted to so much cooking and felt guilty taking as much when she wasn't contributing as much...

But she still had some. More than one person's worth for sure, even if that one person is Najaran.

Once the area was clear enough, the reason behind why she had so much food would become clear to anyone who hadn't seen this before. She reached her free hand behind herself and several cards flew out of the pouch at her back, and into her hand. She threw the cards into the air and they burst into light, resolving themselves into a myriad of odd beings.

The smallest were Eidolon and Gremlin, who veteran passengers have probably seen around the train a million times by now. They ran and carried and fetched for her a lot, helped with chores, and Gremlin especially liked to hang out on the SCP to nap.

Then there was Cait Sith and Living Weapon among the more medium sized creatures. Cait Sith snuggled up next to her, while Eidolon curled up in her lap. She herself was sitting on the lap of a large suit of armor, with what looked like a rideable flying dinosaur/dragon hybrid chewing softly at her head. Thunderbeak's way of offering comfort.

Over Knights shoulder, Gargoyle loomed. And behind him, the largest of the creatures she had summoned - though he stretched the definition of creature somewhat - was a massive stone wall with a face. She told them quietly that Curufin had left, as she passed out food. Her Cards pressed close, offering comfort.

The good
Back on the train, her Cards back in their pouch, Najaran did luck out with one thing. The new ingredient! Fruit! Fresh wonderful fruit! She didn't care if eating too much made her mouth sting. Never mid she mostly made stews on the train. She was going to find a way to make pineapple everything! And eat it raw too. PINEAPPLES!

OH! She had to find Nell and tell her!

Not... that she had clue one where Nell tended to hang out.

Waking up

Najaran had bounded out of the train -please excuse how exhausted she looks - and... slipped. In the slush. And down she went. Well, like any crossword puzzle, she managed to both go down... and across. As she slid, she looked up and saw Curufin leaving and... stopped noticing anything else.

Like the new/returning passenger she was sliding right towards...

The girl with the man headed talking staff just summoned a bunch of weird creatures in a bright flash of light. One of them, Knight, towers over most humans. Gargoyle towers over Knight. And Wall iof Stone shadows them all, so... noticeable if anyone wants to look to the furthest end of the platform.

Seeing them off

The small orange house cat had bounded out into the slushy snow to beg new comers for fish, mess with their heads, and basically just have fun. Or so it seemed. The truth is he felt he had to come out and check in case Papillon or Celesto or the Infernomancer, or someone else who was bad news showed up.

All the talking with Leia, almost getting to get home, just t have it ripped away from him... he's been thinking about home a lot these last several days.

So he thought he was prepared to pretend to be happy cat while keeping an eye on things. He did not expect the gut punch he got.

Yota leaving was a little sad. He was counting on the other cat for votes for the fishing car.

But Curufin leaving stopped him in his - train pun incoming - tracks. No... NO NONONONOONONONONONONO. No. People he loved needed to stop going away!

But... he had to be Spark. Had to play the role.

"CURUFIN! COME BACK! WHO IS GOING TO BUY ME FISH IF YOU LEAVE?!"

Had to play the role.

Had to.

Because cats aren't supposed to be sad.

Role call.
Spark is going to do his best to play the role of happy punning housecat begging for fish. The act might be a little too big this month. A little too in your face, a little too happy seeming.

Because it had to be.

Because no one wanted a sad cat. And very few people on the train knew he had emotions that ran that deep.

And to keep Adrien safe, even though he wasn't here... he had to keep it that way.

So feel free to find yourself pounced on from above by an orange house cat yelling "DEATH FROM ABOVE!".

Or maybe he is looking up at you with wide begging kitty eyes. Please sir, can I have some fish...?

Locked to Leia

Spark had found a private car and curled up in it. He didn't lock the door and transform. Not yet. He had a feeling Leia would find him. He could transform then. Once she came in and locked the door.

Once it was safe to be someone who was able to cry.

The small orange fluff ball of a cat spotted someone that he was pretty sure he had never pestered for fish. The kid's scent was sorta familiar, but that was it. So, since he had to play the role, he trotted over and sat on the boy's boot, looking up at him with a pathetic 'hungry cat, feed me' look on his face.

Would this kind new person take pity on a poor starving cat?

Library car

Clef may have missed the memo that it is platform day. Even with the loud sounds, the screeching to a stop....

After some time off his usual routine due to family drama, and the whole having failed to leave debacle, he was back in his usual spot. Perched on a large stone in the library car, his staff angled next to him so as to not slide down, but be in easy reach.

Clef himself looked to be about ten or twelve years old to those unfamiliar with Ceiphro. And his clothes made him look like he got dressed in his parents closet. Their Ren Faire/cosplay closet. In the dark.

But actually seeing Clef might be difficult, as he has a book floating in front of him, a blank book floating to one side slowly filling with text, and a notebook and hand carved pen floating to his other side. He will stop to talk to anyone who comes to see him, but for the most part he seems absorbed by his studies.

Platform

One minute Bruno had been settling in to enjoy an afternoon cup of coffee- he hadn't realized how much he'd missed fresh coffee- and the next he found himself somewhere else. Somewhere very foggy, and very cold, and when the fog cleared enough to see, very imposing. His rauna and sandals were gone, replaced by clothes of a different style than he'd ever really worn; the new clothes were at least marginally better at warding off the chill than his own would have been, which he supposed was helpful, but they only added to his sense of total disorientation. And he apparently had a pack of some sort on his back? When had he gotten that? And train tracks? Where had those come from?

Hugging himself and rubbing his upper arms to try and keep warm, he looked around, trying to figure out where on earth he was, while also trying not to panic. "OK, focus, Bruno," he muttered to himself. "The important thing is to stay... calm..." He trailed off as looking around revealed that he wasn't alone on the... railway platform, or whatever it was.

Normally this would have been something of a mixed blessing. On one hand, he at least wasn't alone and maybe one of these people knew where they were, while on the other, having to try and mingle with a bunch of strangers was exactly what he didn't need when he was already trying not to freak out. But that was before he'd gotten a good look at them all. Was that girl gray? Did that man have horns?! And more importantly, had he completely lost his mind?

Arrival

If he'd thought the people on the railway platform were strange, they were nothing compared to when the train arrived. People with blue skin, green skin, purple skin. Blue hair, pink hair, striped hair. People with cats' ears. A vaguely-humanoid, pink... rodent, maybe?... about three or four feet tall. An honest to God giant spider.

All in all, Bruno felt that the yelp and scrambling back against the nearest wall was completely justified. As were his continued doubts about his sanity.

Exploring

Having finally, somewhat reluctantly boarded the train, Bruno was at last forced to admit that he was neither dreaming- pinching himself several times had only resulted in a slightly sore arm-, nor having a mental breakdown. Probably. But that left the question of... what was he going to do now? And what must his familia back in the Encanto think?

For the moment, he settled on trying to make himself as unobtrusive as possible in the crowded train cars while he looked around. He'd heard someone mention a kitchen, so maybe he could at least finally get a cup of coffee? He really needed it now, after the chilly platform and the various shocks of the day. And hopefully he could find somewhere to sit down and drink it that wasn't too crowded. He really needed a moment to think.

Unfortunately, he was a bit too busy thinking just then too, when he should have been watching where he was going, and accidentally bumped into someone. "Ah! Lo siento, I wasn't... I should've been looking where I was going; I'm sorry."

Sleepers and Cabin Upper E3

The swirling colors outside gave way to darkness, and Bruno took that as a sign that he should probably actually find his room. After a short time wandering around the sleeping cars searching for the room that matched the one on his ticket, Bruno finally found Cabin E on the upper level of the third sleeping car. He knocked awkwardly before opening the door and poking his head inside. He knew he'd be expected to share a room with others, but didn't know who, or if any of them were in just then.

Luckily, Peter still has his senses to alert him to danger although it's always a little off on platform day because of the feeling of needing to be on the train. Still, he's able to move swiftly to the side and slips on some ice himself. One thing he can't really stick to is an ice patch so down he goes with a thump.

"Oof." He lets out as he hits the ground and then gets up again as quickly as he can. "Oh my god, are you okay?" He asks, reaching out to help her back to her feet if she needs it.

It hadn't felt like too long ago that T'Challa had shown up on the platform himself, although he had been fortunate enough to have experienced strange things by then. But he certainly could understand something like this taking someone by surprise.

A small happy feline wiggle then he pounced happily on the sandwich. Puns would come later. Freaking the new person out by talking would come later.

One of the few good things about being a Talker was that even as sad as he was... fish could help distract him.

Sadly, however, his appetite was such that finishing the sandwich took less than a minute. But at least it was easier to pretend to be happy with the taste of tuna in his mouth.
