A New Platform [Intro Post January]

On the Train

After a very quiet latter half of the month of Catfish the calendar clicks over. Passengers wake up in their beds as usual to the passenger announcement. "Good morning passengers, it is day one of the month of domino.".

Those that have been on board a while know that new months usually come with new people and so the message a few hours later will not be a surprise. "Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void imminent." A lurch and a jolt and they are soon surrounded by the fog that means they are at a platform.

It will come as a relief that no one leaves this time, no one with packed bags to walk silently towards the barriers.

Added to that the platform itself holds more people then it ever has before. Twenty one figures, all the colours are represented. The ground is icy and their breath pools in white clouds around them.

For New Passengers

At first all they can see if steam. Billowing around them as they come to their senses. They are standing, in clothes that are not their own, styles they might not even recognise. They are carrying a rucksack on their back. For a moment it seems to just be them, alone in the white haze but then the steam begins to fade and they realise they aren’t alone.

The platform is not large and it holds twenty one figures all facing the tracks, all dressed in cargo trousers and hoodies. The air is cold, the ground icy beneath your feet. Both left and right the tracks disappear into the mist. Then there is a roaring sound and out of the fog arrives a train. Jet black with gold writing on the side. The Voidtrecker Express. There is a hiss as the doors slide open and out into the cold step a selection of people. Some are human, some are less so. They are wearing the same hoodie in one of the four colours, red, orange, blue and purple.

The Train

The doors hiss open. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there is anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would not be a good thing also it’s very cold out on the platform. The train is warmer.

Each ICP shows the same message and next to the screens there are stacks of leaflets written by those on the train, with further information. The store rooms have been restocked and it seems that water chestnuts are the month of Domino’s ingredient of choice! Any of orange team who who go to check the luggage cart will find a parcel containing gingerbread snowflakes, decorated with icing. One for each of the orange team, including new members, come share in the reward!

New passengers will find their tickets allow them into their cabins. They may need to negotiate for beds, especially if they want a top bunk!

Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches and you will hopefully find a pillow for your bed if it has not been nabbed by a roommate, there are also spare blankets for if it gets cold.

Departure

A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers and the doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, they may wish to brief their new companions.

The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view as it picks up speed.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express.” A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog filled sky.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated."

Hopefully someone warns you that you really want to heed that warning because a moment later there is a shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding.

As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever changing colours.

Welcome to voidspace!

[ Maybe less evil, but it's still a little creepy. Talking books is generally not a common thing where Steve is from. ]

Overlord of what, exactly?

47 let the silence keep. It was comfortable to him. He enjoyed the quiet. The rest of the platform sort of ruined it with the conversations and general movement in the background but that was to be expected. He spent another few minutes peering thoughtfully at the barrier and eying the surrounding area.

After a long moment he actually addressed the girl. "Have any of the officials--the Inspectors--appeared at any of the terminals? Or were they only seen on the train itself?"

47 had heard rumors of such people. He didn't know a whole lot about them or what they had done when they appeared though. Now was as good a time as any to ask.

She doesn't let go of him. But his comment hurts. She doesn't know if her mother had more children, or if she was the only one. She's the only one to have turned up in the auction that she's aware of, which doesn't really mean anything. She could have just been the one not wanted.

Then she nods, and finally releases him. "Yes, I'm okay." She says, softly. She's always okay. She has to be, she's the Little Mistress, and it wouldn't do to admit to distress. The hug made her feel better anyway. "Worried about the people at home. The Mistress promised to beat Jocko, severely, if he lost me a second time." Because, although Treeko had been the one to lose her first, Jocko was responsible for her.

47 resumed staring at the book in total silence with his impassible expression. He was definitely not interested.

As the moment wore on again, the hitman eventually made to walk past the book and his rocky "throne" as if nothing had stopped in him the first place. He even stepped so close to the book that his footsteps shifted the pebbles underneath the book.

Happy glares at Peter before turning and digging around for an EpiPen. Finding one, he almost turned towards Peter with the needle but remembered reading something in his file.

"Hey, you need to cover his eyes or distract him," He said looking at Bucky over his shoulder. "Needles wig him out."

"Will they let you go back to see, do you think?"

Without thinking, Will reaches out with his mind in the direction of the engine. But just as before, he feels nothing from it.

He supposed there were worse things to be associated with. A 'good game' of snowball fighting wasn't all that bad. At least the kid didn't suspect him of his true nature, much less know about his penchant for killing people.

"It was a pleasure." Not entirely untrue. It had given him something to do. Something more exciting than watching the snow fall. And almost akin to tactical practice. Almost.

"...that's not an ominous name or anything," the thief couldn't help but point out. That was a horrible name and now he was fairly certain he didn't want to meet her husband. If he wasn't exactly what his name implied then he suspected it would be the total opposite which would be just awkward and horrible for an entirely different reason as far as Garrett was concerned.

He hesitated for a moment but he wasn't trying to make enemies here. And there wasn't very many places to hide. But he didn't typically go around giving out his name or where to find him. "Garrett."

He figured he wouldn't spend a whole lot of time in those small closets called sleeping cabins anyway. But she could drop off things there for him if she really wanted to.

"I tend to make my own," the blackhand replied. "There are always ways around what others view as obstacles."

Garrett let a few beats pass by before glancing back at the door. "So," he began cautiously, "have you looked inside yet?"

"Got it," Bucky replies, and puts himself right up in Peter's face, so he can't see what Happy's doing. "Hey. Hey, look at me. It's gonna be okay," he puts his metal arm in front of Peter's face, pushing up the sleeve, and does something he hopes Peter hasn't seen before.

He shifts the plates, in a way that normally allows him to increase power to his fist. It's a lot of whirring and shifting and he hopes sufficiently 'cool' to distract the teen.

Garrett nodded and made a mental note of the small description. Not really much to go by but it was better than nothing and...well, it at least gave the lanky man's view on whom he was talking about. A bit.

"Good friend of yours, I take it?" Garrett didn't really have any friends. And definitely not any here. That he'd noticed so far.

Not being pushy about friendship and socializing and just generally everything that Garrett was not was a definite bonus in his book. Short, easy conversations were the best kind. Points were also rewarded for not bringing up his arachnid parts at any point during this meeting. Also for being brave and confrontational but not in an overly excited or aggressive way like a certain other young female he knew...

"Right." Beat. "See you around." Probably. Small space and all.

Peter is going to just take that as a no. They can’t wait. He sucks in a rough breath, his muscles tensing up because he knows what’s coming next. He’d try to argue but he can’t at the moment beyond a few frantic noises.

And then Bucky is in his face, showing him his metal arm and it’s still cool. He’s watching-he wants to talk about the vibranium and all the things the arm can do but he literally cannot talk. His mouth is fixed in a tight line as he watches because he knows Bucky is just trying to distract him. He can do this. It’s just a quick shot. It’ll be over and done with and he can go back to whatever he was doing.

In the few seconds that Bucky distracted Peter, Happy jabbed him hard in the leg with the Epipen.

"Can he get some water?"

Better to not tempt the kleptomaniac in the room with suspicious movements, all right. He'd be hard for him not to steal things while on board this train. He would only try it because it was such a small space and he was stuck here with these people for who knew how long. He didn't need to make any enemies.

Would he refrain from stealing anything at all? Probably not. Not for long. But he'd be cautious and reasonable about it.

"I'll keep that in mind," the thief replied. He had already discovered what the one thing not like the others in his bag was. He'd put it on his person to hide it and keep it close. Unlike Bucky he wasn't worried about it getting stolen so much as it rousing suspicion of a different sort. No one needed to know he had a set of lockpicks with him.

In response he drops the board on the floor and sets one foot on it as he starts to inspect the controls.

Amery followed, hesitantly at first, but looking around at everything they passed. It really was quite fascinating. "Is this train really equipped with everything we need?" Showers? Bathrooms? Books? He hoped there were books.

Happy turned, wanting to glare at the person that had seen him fall, but looking Evie in the eye, he just couldn't muster the bluster. He shrugged his shoulders some, looking a little pink in the ears.

"I've been worse," Happy admits. "How long have you been here?"

"That sounds about right then." Being cursed by a kami was exactly what happened to him. And it sucked as much as it sounded.

"Never heard of it," the thief admitted. He'd never heard of a book like that. Which didn't mean it didn't exist but just that he didn't get the joke. He was also lost with the last sentence Kaito spoke but decided not to ask about it again so soon. It sounded like the spider had a lot of names given to her though.

"Teleportation, huh? That's not usually an arachne thing. We don't usually get magic unless... well." He dismissed it with a shrug. There were ways but he clearly didn't feel like discussing them. "But I've seen other monsters use magic like that. It can be...startling." And inconvenient for those without it. Or useful if you knew the person and could ask for a ride. But mostly inconvenient if you didn't like said person.

"Yeah, no problem," Bucky replies, glancing over to make sure Happy is done before he backs out of Peter's persona space, grabbing a paper cup from near the sink and filling it before offering it to Peter. "What did you give him?"

"Well now, I haven't been here that long." She folds her hands thoughtfully.

"We have no contact with the driver, and to date all attempts to access the engine compartment have failed. Roughly once a month we stop to collect more passengers, and occasionally to loose some as well. Who goes and who stays seems to be arbitrary, and out of our control. Anyone who attempts to leave on the platform will fail, but if they are to be discharged, they walk through the gates and ignore all calls to stay, as if they do not hear. Once a month we also stop at a random destination, that may or may not be an entirely different world. Usually, there is something there that we are requested to aid."

amery: (∞ This had better be worth my time)

It was the most positive that Amery was going to be in the current situation, especially since he was separated from Anastasia. "I suppose being alone would be worse," he agreed. Though sometimes, it didn't sound so bad.

"Amery Vallet," he said, giving Inigo's hand a firm shake. "It's a pleasure." As much as it could be, considering the circumstances. If nobody here was to blame, then there was no reason to be rude to them. It was a good thing he couldn't get his hands on whoever was responsible for this; then there would be trouble.
