A New Platform [Intro Post January]

On the Train

After a very quiet latter half of the month of Catfish the calendar clicks over. Passengers wake up in their beds as usual to the passenger announcement. "Good morning passengers, it is day one of the month of domino.".

Those that have been on board a while know that new months usually come with new people and so the message a few hours later will not be a surprise. "Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void imminent." A lurch and a jolt and they are soon surrounded by the fog that means they are at a platform.

It will come as a relief that no one leaves this time, no one with packed bags to walk silently towards the barriers.

Added to that the platform itself holds more people then it ever has before. Twenty one figures, all the colours are represented. The ground is icy and their breath pools in white clouds around them.

For New Passengers

At first all they can see if steam. Billowing around them as they come to their senses. They are standing, in clothes that are not their own, styles they might not even recognise. They are carrying a rucksack on their back. For a moment it seems to just be them, alone in the white haze but then the steam begins to fade and they realise they aren’t alone.

The platform is not large and it holds twenty one figures all facing the tracks, all dressed in cargo trousers and hoodies. The air is cold, the ground icy beneath your feet. Both left and right the tracks disappear into the mist. Then there is a roaring sound and out of the fog arrives a train. Jet black with gold writing on the side. The Voidtrecker Express. There is a hiss as the doors slide open and out into the cold step a selection of people. Some are human, some are less so. They are wearing the same hoodie in one of the four colours, red, orange, blue and purple.

The Train

The doors hiss open. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there is anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would not be a good thing also it’s very cold out on the platform. The train is warmer.

Each ICP shows the same message and next to the screens there are stacks of leaflets written by those on the train, with further information. The store rooms have been restocked and it seems that water chestnuts are the month of Domino’s ingredient of choice! Any of orange team who who go to check the luggage cart will find a parcel containing gingerbread snowflakes, decorated with icing. One for each of the orange team, including new members, come share in the reward!

New passengers will find their tickets allow them into their cabins. They may need to negotiate for beds, especially if they want a top bunk!

Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches and you will hopefully find a pillow for your bed if it has not been nabbed by a roommate, there are also spare blankets for if it gets cold.

Departure

A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers and the doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, they may wish to brief their new companions.

The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view as it picks up speed.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express.” A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog filled sky.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated."

Hopefully someone warns you that you really want to heed that warning because a moment later there is a shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding.

As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever changing colours.

Welcome to voidspace!

Bucky nods, taking a few seconds to size Garrett up and figures what the hell, might as well ask. "So does everyone have insect legs where you come from?" and in an attempt to play it casual, he picks his notebook back up, flips it open, and starts writing again.

Bucky shakes his head. "Nah, it's too late for that to do any good, anyway, but thank you. Anyone ever tell you that you're unusually polite?" he asks, his smile a little warmer now.

47 never would have told a potential opponent that he cheated at anything. Children. So young and naive. He supposed. He didn't remember anything like that from his childhood. Anything that made him happy also frightened and worried him.

He shook his head. "I've never invested my time in it, no." He could play but there was no joy in it. He had the perfect poker face but his luck was fifty-fifty with the cards. Besides, he'd only ever played when it was for a mission.

"Yes, the clouds of steam that gather every time we stop at a Void platform suggest it's a steam engine, but I don't believe it for a moment -- unless it's being generated by matter-antimater fusion or some other futuristic engine type. Otherwise, the train looks as though it was built in the 1800s. But I think that's just the artistic taste or historical interest of the builder."

He stares as the Doctor licks the metal wall.

"What the heck are you doing???" he asks, with a grin.

47 has never played with the card sharks that are the Gosho boys. They all know they are cheating. The challenge is in winning anyway.

"Well, if you wanna learn, we'll teach you." He shrugs cheerfully. "It might give you something else to do with your time, anyway!"

Science experiment, huh? You look more like a guy who's been to the gym a lot.

[Reigen accepts the help with getting back on his feet, dusting off a little before fully facing Steve in greeting.]

Arataka Reigen, Voidtrecker Passenger Representative and Number-One Modern Psychic, at your service. I'd say to google me, but we don't have internet.

She stood still as he was silent, looking at the barrier herself but making no moves or sounds. At his question her head tilted up and she shook her head. "They did just be being on the train. Though he do be feeling like one." She pointed out the tall metal man in the blue hoodie who had appeared on the platform this time.

"But they did no never be being at these barriers."

"He do no be liking you?" She's not surprised at that actually. Tony had a temper and a fierce need to help those he had decided needed protecting.

She's lucky that for the most part she has stayed on his good side, but his threats still rang in her ears. If she dared hurt Peter, even with words he would bring her endless pain and untold suffering.

He is the most dangerous person on the train but sticking close to him is better than trying to fight him. "I do be being sorry, he must be being a difficult enemy to be having."

"It's got showers and bathrooms sir." He nodded and pointed one out the next time they passed. "It's not got books but you can buy them from the shop. You got to have points first."

And he's not sure how you got points. There was just a number on the screen that showed how many you had.

"I got a book though, you can borrow it if you want." He smiled and added, "It's a grown up book, not a kid book!"

He's not even a quarter of the way through. It is a lot more tricky than he had thought it would be, but he is persevering.

"I'll keep that in mind." The offer would have been appreciated perhaps if it held more interest to him. But he could continue to be amiable. It was all he could do to make this easier for everyone on board and himself.

"What do you do, if you don't mind me asking?" He asks curiously. "I don't think I've ever seen you in the games carriage."

flatteries: (and some just won't)

He nods. Inigo hasn't really been around for any attempt, but he's heard people talk about it. Although he has no idea of the full extent of said attempts.

"I don't think anyone has managed to do anything to it. Not to mention someone said there were these weird inspectors before-- they'd probably show up if someone did manage to break stuff that badly around here, right? Isn't that what inspectors do?"

Listen, they didn't exactly have the right circumstances where he's from for inspections to be a normal regular thing.
flatteries: (but now is better than never)

[personal profile] flatteries 2020-01-09 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Amery, then."

Inigo is totally unused to last names, so he just defaults to using the other's first name. Especially since - in his eyes - there's not much of an age difference between them. If he's 17, he's practically already an adult too, right?

"If you need help at any time, feel free to look for me. I mean.." He gestures at the train when they stop shaking hands. "It's fairly hard to be far away, given where we'll be stuck."
flatteries: (everyone's scared someone knows)

[personal profile] flatteries 2020-01-09 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
The teasing intent gets through loud and clear, although it makes Inigo pout all the same. At least he doesn't seem genuinely hurt or anything, more just like he's going along with it in his own way.

"Hey, I'll have you know that I have always been an excellent little brother to her."

Not.. exactly true. But he tries, so that counts, right.

[...hey, is this the cyber-arm guy with amnesia or something? Because Zetta swears he's feeling some deja vu right now.]

'Overlord' is the title given to the rule of a Netherworld. Of course, there's more than one universe, so there's more than one Netherworld. That's why I'm not just 'the' Overlord -- I'm the most badass freaking Overlord in the entire cosmos! Hyaaaha ha ha ha ha!
badassfreakingoverlord: (hopping mad)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2020-01-09 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"What -- hey!" The book practically hopped up and down in an impotent rage. "Hold on! Everyone always tries to sell me on that crap, don't tell me the one time I try it it doesn't work!"
badassfreakingoverlord: (crap I'm a book)

[personal profile] badassfreakingoverlord 2020-01-09 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Zetta scoffed openly. "Considering the Sacred Tome is full of everything that is and ever was, that's a narrow-minded view. This thing is a cosmic keystone. If it were destroyed, everything written in it would be destroyed as well! Which is incidentally why I'm stuck in it, because someone sabotaged it and I had to bind my soul to it to prevent that destruction."
rieper: (walking away.)

[personal profile] rieper 2020-01-09 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The bald man paused his step but didn't turn to look at the book. "It doesn't work on everyone. You chose a poor time to try it."
rieper: (license to kill.)

[personal profile] rieper 2020-01-09 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's not really my thing," he said. It was true he only really ever went through the game carriage to get somewhere else rather than stay in it. He had no reason to linger there.

He didn't add anything else to the conversation. That was as much as he wanted to say.
themasterthief: (♠ are you serious right now.)

Garrett huffed. There it was. The question may have been said casually but Garrett knew it was inevitable. This was definitely not Ryslig. He was beginning to accept that was probably the truth.

He shook his head. "No. No one is an arachne where I come from. But I didn't come directly from there."

As Renee explained that it'd be no big deal to her Paper couldn't help but do this happy little wiggle of excitement. He still exercised self control and didn't reach out to touch her or anything, but it was very clear that she had just made Paper's day, if not the entire year. He maybe didn't care to find the secrets to giving himself the ability of flight, but it was still something he always wanted to experience. He had no friends to give him air ship rides back at home. Gosh was he excited! "Oh, thank you! You don't know what it means to me!"

He grew more calm as she spoke of her powers, listening carefully. He had heard rumor that some clerics could draw power from kinetic forces, but that seemed to be quite an esoteric practice if the rumors were actually true. Ultimately, Paper wasn't a bird who knew physics: he was a bit simple in the ways of maths and sciences, outside of intuitive knowledge.

"I can speak telepathically. May I switch to that? I have more words there." A curse of being able to read everything but only use words that he's heard. "It isn't mind reading, just talking."

With her permission, he switched to speaking to her mentally. "So you can change the direction of movement? So, for example, if the rock moves left, you can change the movement so it's now moving right? But at the same speed?"

The hitman looked at the man she pointed out. If 'man' was even a proper description of the black encased humanoid standing on the platform looking quite imposing and less than friendly. 47 wondered if that's what she meant by 'feeling like one'. He certainly had an air of 'don't bother me with your pettiness' to him. Someone used to being in charge and frightening those beneath him.

47 wasn't intimidated but he did register the man as a potential threat and he wouldn't provoke the odd person without cause. Best thing was to steer clear of him altogether.

"Does he now? That's interesting." There was a small thoughtful pause. "How did they show up on the train?"

"The more I learn, the more terribly far I feel that I must be from home. I do not even feel any of the Old Ways here."

"People usually tell me that I'm old for my age." A pause. "And also terribly old fashioned. And a bit odd."

But Will was grinning as he says it. He'd never been offended by that. In fact he found it rather a compliment at best, and amusing at worst.

Happy takes the needle out quickly and tosses it in the bin before Peter can ask too many questions. "It's epinephrine or something like that," He thinks for a second. "They give it to people who can't breathe, it helps."

Happy, then looked at Peter, frowning. "How can you not know what can be lethal to spiders?"
