A New Platform [Intro Post January]

On the Train

After a very quiet latter half of the month of Catfish the calendar clicks over. Passengers wake up in their beds as usual to the passenger announcement. "Good morning passengers, it is day one of the month of domino.".

Those that have been on board a while know that new months usually come with new people and so the message a few hours later will not be a surprise. "Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void imminent." A lurch and a jolt and they are soon surrounded by the fog that means they are at a platform.

It will come as a relief that no one leaves this time, no one with packed bags to walk silently towards the barriers.

Added to that the platform itself holds more people then it ever has before. Twenty one figures, all the colours are represented. The ground is icy and their breath pools in white clouds around them.

For New Passengers

At first all they can see if steam. Billowing around them as they come to their senses. They are standing, in clothes that are not their own, styles they might not even recognise. They are carrying a rucksack on their back. For a moment it seems to just be them, alone in the white haze but then the steam begins to fade and they realise they aren’t alone.

The platform is not large and it holds twenty one figures all facing the tracks, all dressed in cargo trousers and hoodies. The air is cold, the ground icy beneath your feet. Both left and right the tracks disappear into the mist. Then there is a roaring sound and out of the fog arrives a train. Jet black with gold writing on the side. The Voidtrecker Express. There is a hiss as the doors slide open and out into the cold step a selection of people. Some are human, some are less so. They are wearing the same hoodie in one of the four colours, red, orange, blue and purple.

The Train

The doors hiss open. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there is anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would not be a good thing also it’s very cold out on the platform. The train is warmer.

Each ICP shows the same message and next to the screens there are stacks of leaflets written by those on the train, with further information. The store rooms have been restocked and it seems that water chestnuts are the month of Domino’s ingredient of choice! Any of orange team who who go to check the luggage cart will find a parcel containing gingerbread snowflakes, decorated with icing. One for each of the orange team, including new members, come share in the reward!

New passengers will find their tickets allow them into their cabins. They may need to negotiate for beds, especially if they want a top bunk!

Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches and you will hopefully find a pillow for your bed if it has not been nabbed by a roommate, there are also spare blankets for if it gets cold.

Departure

A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers and the doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, they may wish to brief their new companions.

The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view as it picks up speed.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express.” A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog filled sky.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated."

Hopefully someone warns you that you really want to heed that warning because a moment later there is a shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding.

As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever changing colours.

Welcome to voidspace!

They could talk about the blue team's new members later. Their leader wasn't alone, even if it was his team.

Tony rolled his eyes, but he coupled it with a grin. "Fine, whatever you want, dear." He took the camera and took the duo's picture followed immediately by stepping in to get a selfie with all of them. Ignis might have ended up with bunny ears..

Stepping back, he handed over the phone. "If you want, Evie said she was getting some sandwiches together for everyone if you'd like to go help."

As bad as he was sure Peter was feeling, it was kind of nice sitting around like this again. He usually kept himself so busy that he rarely had time for this anymore. Maybe Ignis was on to something when he said he needed to slow down.

"Alright, that's fair. You don't have to be an optimist when you're feeling crappy." He was quiet for a moment. "You have had a rough life, but you've also had a lot of good. There are some people without family to love them and you have always been the apple of someone's eye." Like Peter was Tony's now. "You also have cool powers and can help people who need it. You're likable and cute and friendly. All good things. And now you're on this adventure through the Void meeting all kinds of fun people like Gwen and Myles."

She tips her head curiously as she listens.

"Your world sounds very different to ours - we have nothing like that in my world. 'Magic' is, by and large, used to refer to the works of the Enemy, and although one might be friendly with the ainur, collaborative work on a project or a genial agreement on borders and protective treaties are different to what it sounds like you are suggesting."

She shakes her head. "Call it a rank, perhaps. Or a state of being. The Istari were Ainur, sent from Valinor. But they were sent to encourage and inspire, not to fight, and so they went in raiment such as mortal Men, old but still hale."

She allowed the touches and smiled at him.

"Curiosity will only get you so far, but I'm open to negotiations."

She nods in turn, a bob of her head, before moving to continue onward. It will take some time to get used to this, but at least there are those here who are welcoming.

Raven's head tilted a bit while she thought. "Family isn't just 'blood'. Sometimes it's people you choose. I don't know that some of us on the train are close enough to be considered 'family'. But we are all kind of stuck here, in groups."

How strange. Perhaps there is some manner of drugs involved? Something to keep them from seeing it? It would explain how she had started in one area before arriving on a platform. She's new and inexperienced with this place to give any solid answer.

"Yet, it is not as if a request had been put in, is it?" Does that explain how they come to be? A form submitted and- well, Padmé is grasping at straws at the moment. The technology back home appears more advanced than it does here, but things also don't just appear out of the blue.

She rolled her eyes and muttered, "Of course there's a second one" under her breath before refocusing.

"That is useful to know," she eyed Misa and decided to not press further. Instead, she changed the subject. "Has anyone explained this place to you yet?"

"Yes." Although she's not entirely certain what point he is emphasizing. "There are sanctions in the Senate. Penalties for those who break the rules, so to speak."

It is a slow and tedious process, mind. Just look at the Trade Federation.

Oh she knew that tone of voice and was honestly disappointed she hadn't been there when Tony had dropped that particular nugget of information.

The smile turned devious as she started to reply, "Oh but Mast..." She stopped the word in the middle, a look of disgust overcoming her face. "No, I can't say it even in jest."

It was impressive what the spells of his home could cover, and if he were a wizard he could take the time to learn them all! Unfortunately, though, he wasn't a wizard. So he couldn't learn them all. He could have chosen to take the pact of the tome and come close, but he chose not to go that route because he worked alone in almost all cases. Being able to conjure a weapon was more helpful in this case.

"There are a lot of nasty creatures and evil-aligned people in the ruins of ancient cities. I just want to find old dusty books and make maps." The last bit wasn't wrong, but it was also said more in jest than seriously. "So if what you have from where you're from isn't magic, may I ask what it is?"

"A knight?" Tony asked, surprised but intrigued at the new title. It was sweet and felt far too good for him. A knight wouldn't have accidentally killed all those people or let the Avengers crumble. He wouldn't be trying to lead this train while at least a quarter crazy with PTSD symptoms. He wasn't a knight, because he wasn't a soldier. At least, that's what he used to believe. As he thought about their lives here, how could he say he wasn't a soldier? Their dining room was a fancy mess hall. He was in a uniform and they went into battle. Maybe he was a soldier. Could he possibly be a knight? It seemed far to noble a title for him, but if that's what Ignis wanted to call him or believed him to be, who was he to say he shouldn't?

"I'll be your knight to the best of my ability." It didn't feel like that great of a promise when he was sitting here needing those soothing gestures like a child. How could Ignis think of him as a knight when he saw him like this?

In their cabin, he was a little surprised by the role reversal but as he settled in with his head on Ignis' chest, he couldn't think of anything he'd rather be doing. He snuggled closer and tried to forget about how much pressure was on him with all these new recruits.

She watched him still, seeing his fist clench. Lots of people had been angry about the inspectors. She had been angry about the inspectors. She still was when she stopped to think about it.

"Mister Stark did be trying to be attacking them. I did be trying to be helping but they did be saying 'do no be fighting us' and I could no be. I did no even be wanting to be fighting them after that and did be trying to be stop mister Stark."

Her face was dark with anger, she really didn't like thinking about it.

She cocks her head to the side. "You don't have droids do you?" She asks, shrewdly. Every backwater has droids. She can't imagine one without them!

Honestly, this is strange. He doesn't know about the ships, or the droids... what kind of world is she on?!

She's going to gain her freedom, Bucky. She just has to go through some stuff first. "Freedom is just another cage. When I am Mistress, I will choose my own." She says softly. She knows that he doesn't understand. She knows that he is confused about how she can be so accepting of the system on Canto.

She cocks her head to the side. "Yes?" She's not sure how to answer that question.

She shakes her head. "No. Cantonica is in the Corporate Sector of the galaxy, I live in a city on Cantonica called Canto Bight." She explains. She's never heard of his world, maybe he's never heard of hers.

"Warm? It's a mostly desert planet."

He considered what she said for a moment, thinking about it and considering what to say next. "Where I am from the adventuring guild is something of a chosen family, yes. Not everyone is incredibly tight knit, but there is a bond that unites us all. The adventuring group you belonged to would be like a close family, while the rest of the guild is more like the far away family?" He meant extended family, but he wasn't sure what to call it. "So your group may be your brothers, while the rest of the guild is family but not as close. I see the train a little bit like that: the far away family. There is a bond that connects us, even if we did not ask for it."

It would be fair to make the logic jump he would consider the teams close family, but he didn't say so. He was still new and didn't know his team members that well, but he likely would eventually consider them that. He had a comment regarding being stuck here, but he chose to hold it back for now. It likely wouldn't be well received.

Tony ignored both of their reactions to his obnoxious joke, but did scowl at Luke's remark on the team colors.

"Like Ignis and I wouldn't? I'm literally in the process of doing that when I was brought here!" Purple team obviously was full of idiots. (Okay maybe not, but in this moment that was Tony's opinion. It would change if you wait a couple seconds). "And how exactly does that describe him?" What did Darth Vader and Peter Parker have in common?

There was a hand that was put on Tony's shoulder. It was a gesture of reassurance and for the older man to remain calm.

"I'm sure no offense was intended." There was a small sigh and a slight nod at Luke in a silent sort of apology.

He waited patiently to be explained to, because the more intel they had in Luke's father, the easier not underestimating him would be.

The idea that magic is not a thing where Nerdanel was from was incredibly different. How could there not be magic there? Magic was the earth and the world around, the way life moved through the material plane! The sapping of the leylines was causing the great forest of Lorelai to die, the winds to stop, and the tides to fall still. Paper was baffled at the idea of a world that didn't have magic.

"I hope you forgive my confusion: you seem to be right in that our worlds are very different from one another. What you describe with the Istari sounds almost like a deity's champion, depending on the deity and their goals. The champions are chosen by their deity to uphold their ideals and be their working arm in the material plane." He paused, then continued. "I do not think that is the nature of the Istari and the Ainur, though, as the champions are mortals that are hand picked. They were often clerics to their chosen deity, and their deity then granted them power beyond their normal training because of their devotion." Often they had abilities far beyond those of normal clerics, but they were ultimately mortals who were blessed with a far more direct connection with their deity than others.

"Allow me to ask, then: what are the Ainur?"

"You don't have a problem with people declaring themselves the boss of you?" Humans sure thought weird, Zetta knew that already, but trying to figure out this point of view was too much for him.

"You should be careful with your words, because they almost come out as if they were vows." Ignis lightly teased. He didn't cease trying to soothe Tony with his light touches and smiled as he held onto the man in his arms.

Had he been asked about the knight status, the advisor would've replied that knights were human too and not made of iron, even if they believed that of themselves.

Feeling Tony relax and snuggle, green eyes closed and Ignis breathed in a contented sigh, slowly and gently rubbing his head against his mate's. This was the kind of peace they rarely got so he was determined not to let it slip away.

"Right, but based on trade and aid, not on actual arrest and jailing, I would assume!" Therein lay a crucial difference of authority.
