A New Platform [Intro Post April!]

On the Train

Two days after they return from their mission they are awoken as usual "Good morning passengers, it is day sixteen of the month of Egret. The shop has been updated and points have been applied to passengers tickets."

Those that go to check the shop terminals will find they have indeed updated, with the option to buy larger items and also animals. The morning goes on until just after noon there is a second announcement.

"Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one." A lurch and a jolt and they are soon surrounded by the fog that means they are at a platform. Though the fog is thick, thicker than usual perhaps, there are patches on sunlight shining through and it is pleasantly warm.

The doors open and the first few to disembark do so with rucksacks on, hoods pulled up, silent and almost blank faced. Cu Chulain, Dio Brando, Disreputable Dog, Heiji Hattori, Loki Maedhros, Maglor, Naruto, Thor, Tobias Fangor.

They walk to the barriers, show their tickets and disappear.

But on the platform itself there are once again new faces. All are stood, waiting for the train.

For New Passengers

At first all they can see is steam. Billowing around them as they come to their senses. They are standing, in clothes that are not their own, styles they might not even recognise. They are carrying a rucksack on their back. For a moment it seems to just be them, alone in the white haze but then as people begin to shift or call out it will become apparent they are not alone.

The platform is not large and it holds eighteen figures all facing the tracks, all dressed in cargo trousers and hoodies. It's warm but foggy making it hard to see much, but there are clearer patches bathed in sunlight found across the platform. Both left and right the tracks disappear into the mist. Then there is a roaring sound and out of the fog arrives a train. Jet black with gold writing on the side. The Voidtrecker Express. There is a hiss as the doors slide open and out into the cold step a selection of people. Some are human, some are less so. They are wearing the same hoodie in one of the four colours, red, orange, blue and purple.

The Train

The doors hiss open. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there is anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would not be a good thing. If that is not enough, there are plenty of people on the platform now, to encourage them onto the train.

Each ICP shows the same message and next to the screens there are stacks of leaflets written by those on the train, with further information. The store rooms have been restocked with an abundance of onions, in case the passengers weren't bored of them yet.

Passengers who are not brand new will notice that the train has gotten yet longer again with a sixth sleeper cabin for new arrivals.

New passengers will find their tickets allow them into their cabins. They may need to negotiate for beds, especially if they want a top bunk!

Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches and you will hopefully find a pillow for your bed if it has not been nabbed by a roommate, there are also spare blankets for if it gets cold.

Departure

A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers and the doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, they may wish to brief their new companions.

The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view as it picks up speed.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express.” A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog filled sky.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated. Entry into Voidspace in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."

A shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding. As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever changing colours.

Welcome to the Void!

Noct groaned. "Chores. Seriously...?" He sighed. "As long as they never make me cook, we'll be safe."

He knows that look. He also knows that things can always get worse, he just hopes they don't. "Yeah, quite literally going to hell."

"Hate to break it to you, but cooking is one." She grins a bit, "Though you can just ignore 'em. No one has forced me to do the assigned chores yet."

For his sake, Dairine hopes the same. She winces a little.

"Been there before." She pulls her legs up onto the seat so she's sitting cross-legged. "...Do you wanna talk about it?"

There's no pressure if he'd rather not. She'll get it.

Noct sighed. "It'll be their funerals if they do try. I have never cooked for myself in my life..." One of the perks of being a prince.

Noct thought about saying no. It was still really raw, and he wasn't sure he could get through it all...but something about this girl made him relax.

"Well...It's kind of a long story. Shortening it, I was supposed to marry my childhood friend to bring peace to our world, but it was a ruse for the Empire to attack our capital, kill my father, and steal this crystal that kind of powers the royal family..."

He scratched his neck. "...To brighten the mood of the world, the wedding was supposed to still take place, but when we got to the city the wedding would take place in, the Empire attacked and Luna...she was murdered. My advisor...my friend was blinded trying to save me, and some other stuff happened..."

"The man that killed Luna started messing with our minds. He made me hallucinate that I was chasing him down and throwing him off a train, when, in fact, it was my best friend. While all of this is going on, the days were growing shorter and shorter and daemons were filling the world..."

He flushed. "That's the short version."

"Really? Not ever?" That's almost impressive. Dairine isn't much of a cook, and even she has helped out in her family's kitchen.

She sits back and listens. Quickly it becomes apparent why he might not have cooked before. Royal family, huh? She wouldn't have guessed. He seemed much more down to earth than Roshaun or even the elves.

Dairine hadn't expect quite so much information so quickly, but she lets him keep talking until he's finished.

"...Wow." She's not sure where to even start. "If that's the short version, you really have been through a lot."

"I'm sorry about your friend. And your father." Dairine knows from personal experience that the words only do so much, but still.

"Well, in the last few weeks, I've learned some basic things helping Iggy while we were camping...but nothing beyond stirring some stew..." Noct admitted.

It felt good to get all of that out. It gave his feelings credence, and that was somwthing he desperately needed.

"Thanks...luckily, my friend is okay. He's actually here on the train." Small favors, he guessed. "And thanks for listening. I haven't really had a chance to lay it all out there like that."
wizard_redfive: (And the words came out easily)

"Stirring stew, huh? You could probably manage pasta then. It's kinda similar."

She leans back.

"Well, that's good to hear at least. It's rough being a lone traveler in these spaces." Especially when the excursion ends up taking much longer. Like, say, three years. "No problem. I've heard all kinds of life stories. And well, with everything going on, you probably hadn't had the time to get it out there, huh?"

She's been there. Though in Dairine's case, stubbornness had been a much larger factor in her not sharing her troubles.

"I've burnt pasta before..." One of the few times he tried to prove he didn't need help living on his own. He failed.

"Yeah, I'm just glad that he doesn't blame me for what happened." He smiled softly. "No, we've been on the move constantly...and I tend to bottle things up...but I'm realizing that's just not going to work anymore."

A slight wince. "OK, maybe not pasta then."

Though you never know. With a little practice, he might be able to handle a nice spaghetti dinner.

"He's your friend. Why would he blame you?" she says, as if she isn't shouldering the blame for what happened to Roshaun. Easier to see that the fault lies elsewhere when it's someone else. She hums in agreement. "Yeah, it's real easy to ignore those things when you keep moving and busy. But it always catches up to you eventually. Quicker than usual, in a place like this."

She looks a little distant, frowning. "The last world I was in... really liked to bring stuff like that out in the open."

"I'm hoping I can learn, in time." Now that he didn't have to worry about the Empire chasing him, he might have time to learn.

"I pushed him off a train. I wouldn't blame him if he was a little upset about it." Noct sighs. "But he's so sweet, once he learned the truth, he brushed it off like it was nothing."

He frowns at the mention for another world. "I'm guessing not with consent." He sates stuff like that. People should always have a say on when their issues get aired out.

"With time and practice, you can learn almost anything." Dairine admittedly is on the quick side of learning, but she stands by her statement. "Here we'll have plenty of time. Resources... well, you should be good for cooking lessons at least."

The train certainly did not have the same stock as Paradisa, what with their wishing system. Though considering the price of those items, that might be for the best.

She blinks. "Is this the same friend who lost their sight? You sure got put through the ringer." Dairine nods at the second half. "Sounds like you have good friends."

Dairine snorts. "Cair Paradisa didn't bother with getting permission. Didn't even giving us warning. All we ever knew is that it'd mess with us at least once a month, but the when and how were a mystery until it happened."
