Greening up the Greenhouse

She's spent longer on this train now than she'd been in Olympus. It doesn't really feel possible that it all happened in such a short time. It feels even less possible that she could be here months. Years? She stays curled up in her bunk that morning, staring at the wall. Crying maybe. A little. She's already had her birthday on here. What more is she missing at home? Nothing, because time doesn't move there like everyone said, or has Artemis been looking for her desperately. Would she have told her mom? Would Hades notice if she stoppped showing up to the internship?

Generally speaking, it's a bad morning. She drifts to a late breakfast and finally ends up in the greenhouse. There's a long moment where she wants to tear it all down. Her fists clench at the sight of her inane roses, her eyes fill red at the reminder that the greenhouse came with her arrival. She wants to break the walls, tear down the roses, claw up the burgeoning growth, destroy the smells and sights that remind her of her home, of her dreams. But she takes a deep breath. Hands relax, her eyes clear. Put into work. Wrath isn't helping anyone.


She sifts through the seeds, picking out ones for vegetables and fruits, leaving the ones for more decorative things to the side. Plenty of people have used this place for flowers. Herself included. Carefully, she trails one set of seeds in a thin line along the edge of a raised bed and covered them with soil. With a hand to the soil, she takes a deep breath and with a soft pink glow, plants curl up and out, unwinding leaves and blossoming. It continues until the blossoms fall and red strawberries hang fat and glistening. She picks one and holds it in her teeth as she stands to start the process all over.

"It sounds very different from the world I'm from. But--I'm sure it works for you. Have you met them? I mean--do they live with you, or to themselves?" It's honestly fascinating to think of someone like a god not wanting to be worshiped.

[springforth]

"I have no idea how old the Titans are. And I certainly wouldn't dare to ask, even if I met one. They're kind of..." She taps her chin uncertainly, "More. Defeated and all, but I don't know. Tall as mountains, powerful enough to create the gods, but brought low. And not happy about it, I think? So yea--probably pretty old. They're more...cosmic themselves."

"As long as you can keep it from attacking anyone, I think that would be fine?" Her voice lilts up in uncertainty. This is not a topic she's well versed in, but she can still have her opinions.

"Something small, able to defend itself but not...well I'd say overly vicious but it's a wild cat so there's going be some claws happening. Maybe able to be trained in some manner. Can you even train cats." Her brow creases in thought. Maybe if you raise them up from very young. Like birds.

"Oh yes! It is their land, after all, although they 'live' mostly in Valmar, insomuch as the represenations of the world can be said to live anywhere, and that city is apart from ours. I studied myself with Lord Aule, the Mountain Builder, as did my father and my husband, and I know one of my law-brothers is quite familiar with Lord Ulmo of the Waters as well as Lady Uinen of the Seas and Lord Osse of the Storms, for his wife, the Lady Earwen, is from Alqualonde originally, and the Teleri love best of all the ocean and the powers that dwell therein."

"Oh, cats can be trained. You just have to learn to bargain with them. Cats are much more independent, so you have to convince them that doing what you want is really doing what they want." Trowa grinned, recalling the lions and how they'd been trained. "So it is more difficult than training a dog, but it can be just as rewarding."

Persephone listens to the listing of various names and epithets. Of the Waters, of the Seas. Of the Storms. Her lips curl up into a half smile as she intently takes it all in.

"It's so strange that they're so open and near you. I can't imagine. What did you learn from the Mountain Builder?"

[springforth]

Persephone consider the question. Maybe. Well--probably. Artemis hadn't liked Persephone's lack of freedom any better than herself. But Artemis has duties a plenty and she only needs to keep herself busy to push off the gloom. She shrugs with an air 'don't want to think about that'.

"We could. If they changed to suit the heights of whomever comes aboard, we just need to get a person as tall as the trees to wander through. Very simple. I'm sure we could just conjure one up, no problem."

"Sculpture." She laughs. "Well, more specifically, how to listen to the heart of the earth, and the songs of the stones. One can't carve well without knowing those. My father and husband are his true students, but the forge was never my calling."

"Hmph. I bet they didn't get turned into books." Which was less a complaint and more a comment that hitting bottom meant you just had to climb back up.

"They would end up very big books."

If the size of a normal person versus a book makes any difference. They were hundreds of times her size. Like a person holding a mouse. She imagines a book a hundred times his size and crosses her arms.

"How tall were you? Does the size of a person correlate to the size of a book?"

[springforth]

It's hard not to pair those she speaks of to the gods Persephone has known her whole life. People she's met and those she's heard of. It's enough to set her questioning, comparing the pantheons. But she holds it back.

"Sculpture has never been my strong suit. Do you carve wood or stone? I could get you some wood if you wanted to keep up your skills as well."

He laughed. "Or we just grow some trees and see if the train takes the hint."

"Both, although I do favor stone." She admits with a smile.

"I've experimented with various forms over the years - I even used metal at one point."

"I was pretty tall! Like a tall human, let's say." That'd provide an easy reference. "But the Sacred Tome was this size when I bound my soul to it, so that didn't change. It was a stupidly large book to begin with."

"I've never tried to train much of anything. I just adore animals and the feeling seems to be mutual." She smiles in return. "I think I'd be a bit of a pushover with doing any sort of training."

"Add a few more inches every day to keep it nudging up, maybe?"

She pantomimes a tree growing slowly, a furtive movement of her hands up and up.

"I'll give it a shot."

[springforth]

"Do you enjoy sculpting anything in particular? I know some people have themes to their art and others hop from thing to thing, finding something new to explore everytime."

[springforth]

"Interesting. I wonder why it doesn't change. But I guess it doesn't really matter. I've turned into a butterfly before. And I know for a fact our kings have turned into an animal or two in his time. Maybe it's about power? Or--it just all shrinks down to fit whatever the container is?"

She's gotten far too into this problem. She's sketching something in the dirt, then wipes it away.

"I just--wonder how things work in other worlds, is all. If it's the same."

"Then the only question is, what kind of tree? And where are we going to put it? Dead center, or do we want to do two, one at either end of of the car, for symmetry?

"Oh, that's definitely me." She smiles. "I started off in figures - that's still what I'm most famous for, and what most of my comissions are. I do enjoy it! But I've branched out to try all sorts - abstract art is particularly good for emotional days, I've found."

"It's... just my soul in here. My mana power is enough to reflect on that in some ways, what with the talking and seeing things and all, but in the end I don't actually have a physical existence that can influence it. Plus it's a cosmic keystone and all, it's pretty damn 'solid' as these things go.

"I... can answer questions, maybe?" A surprisingly subdued offer, since Zetta never considered himself any sort of scholar or anything like that. But he had to admit he'd been exposed to a few new things in the past year or two.

“The hardest part is when they give you the sad eyes when you try to scold them.” Trowa nodded sagely, grinning at Persephone as he did so. “Boscoe will even roll over and show his stomach, too. It’s funny.”

As Persephone pushes back a lock of hair, a trail of tiny white flower follows in her hand's wake, curling up one side of her head.

"I don't even really know what an abstract sculpture would look like. I mean--I've sort of seen abstract paintings but they aren't exactly something you could sculpt."

"That's the joy of it!" She gestures animatedly.

"They can be anything you want! A shape, a twist of metal... I want to try working with ice, one day. We had snow here, but I only did snowmen, as it was my first time with the material. Ice is interesting because of its ephemeral nature."

[springforth]

Ah well, that makes sense. For a given definition of sense. She doesn't have anything like a cosmic keystone, though she can understand what it means in this case. Who he is is enough to influence it, but not change it. Probably. See, this whole not knowing the most basic things about other worlds is enough to send her frustration flaring again.

"...Well. Do you know why other world's mortals have magic? Is that normal? I'm fairly sure to get any blessing like that, you need to be related to the gods and some of them seem to have fairly extensive powers. As if they're related to several. Then again, I appear to exist in some form in a whole other world. Under the name of Lady Vana. And I'm married? Or her version of me is--but I'm supposed to--I just...I hate looking foolish and I feel like the longer I interact with everyone, the more foolish and behind I feel."
