It's--well, guess there's no point in being secretive about the practice in a place like this. A familiar's something mages utilize. More often they're normal animals briefly enchanted so the mage in question can see and hear through them. Slightly more advanced ones can be made from minerals and the like. Rare to see one that talks and harbors its own will, though.
