flatteries: (on the noose around your neck)
a man for flowers ✿ ( INIGO ) ([personal profile] flatteries) wrote in [community profile] voidtreckerexpress 2020-10-31 08:52 pm (UTC)

"Y-Yes." The word spills from his lips again. Quickly, almost too quickly, like he's still thinking about something else as he says it. But he means it all the same. He wants to try. He wants to get stronger. He wants to be better - more resilient, genuinely so, rather than just fronting it. Strong enough to protect others, to be able to be their rock. Strong enough to save his world, to be able to save others'. "I promise, father. I'll do my best."

That's the easy part to say. The easy part to process. But Inigo isn't done yet. He's still thinking, and he licks his lips a little, both mouth and throat suddenly feeling surprisingly dry. Jumblie, still on his shoulder, presses against the side of his head a little, as if in encouragement. It's not that he looks sad, thankfully. Just.. a little startled, maybe.

"But.. you mean that?"

Not the last part, obviously. That's why Inigo already agreed to that. No, the thing his mind seems to have trouble processing is what comes before it.

"You would do that? For.. for me?"

Maybe it's dumb of him to get so surprised about it when it's practically the same thing he offered to Roland mere minutes ago. When he's been going around telling everyone he cares about that. Call me if you need me, and I'll do anything to be there.

But Inigo has never imagined that for himself before. Has never even thought about it, never even dared to want it. Maybe they're a little too alike in that sense, both him and Roland. Too determined to take on their burdens entirely by themselves, to take the whole world upon their back and refuse to let anyone else take even a bit of that pain.

And yet Roland is here in front of him, offering everything Inigo never even dared to dream of. Letting Inigo help him. Practically offering to let Inigo stay with him. Even offering to come to Inigo's world and help him, even though Roland must be so worried about his own world.

It's just like that moment where Inigo confessed he saw Roland like a father figure. Back then, Roland's reaction felt too good to be true too.

But Inigo knows by now. It's never too good to be true with Roland. He wouldn't lie. He means what he says, and it makes all this even more overwhelming.
