Is it his need to be contrarian to Roland that spurs him on, or a sixth sense for the old man that inspires him? Call it a mixture of both, that Roland's argument wasn't good enough - that having them explore new hobbies (and especially Inigo) has been one of Tidus's many side-goals, and needs a better reason to be dropped.
