Bright and early, Ichigo came to the medical car. He had a large thermos of coffee, and Shiro had a cardboard box with some cat toys to keep him busy. He'd even managed to get some of his pens back from Grimmjow. Setting up a stack of file folders, he opened the door to the first exam room and got ready.

"Good morning! Here for your check up?"

Taking note of the locations of the hearts as well, Ichigo put on the stethoscope and smiled at Eight. "Alright, I'm just going to take a listen, make sure they have a regular rhythm and that nothing sounds abnormal." He didn't have to know what the standard resting heart rate was for her species to know when a heart sounded like it was malfunctioning.

Eight held still, allowing Ichigo to let him listen. So far everything looked normal, except for the doctor to not really know about her physiology. Which was weird.

But if he was the primary physician on the train, it would be important for him to know. And, from what he could hear she sounds alright on that front.

"Alright, no abnormal rhythms that I can hear." He reached for the blood pressure cuff and put it around her arm. "This might get tight, but it'll tell me what your blood pressure is."

"Oh... with that?" Eight looked at the device with some curiosity. "Well, I have body pressure, but I don't really have blood..."

"Ah, that's a good point. You said that you're an...octoling? Did I say that right?"

[consider8]

"Yes." Eight nodded. "I'm mostly made out of ink."

No sense of keeping that a secret: he's a doctor. He's going to find that out eventually.

Ichigo made a considering sound at that and grabbed her chart to make note of that. "So do you have a skeletal system or more of a hydraulic system to give your limbs rigidity and protect your internal organs?"

"Veemo!" Eight was pleased. Even without her telling him, he was able to figure that out.

"The second one!" She is almost proud of that, both for her own unique anatomy and for Ichigo. That was surprisingly astute!

"Interesting!" Ichigo grinned, scribbling the notes down quickly. "Well, my blood pressure cuff won't work to measure the pressure of your system, so we'll skip that. You do still have a nervous system, so we can moving onto the reflex test." He grabbed the small reflex hammer and scooted his stool out of the way. "Just let your legs hang over the edge of the bed and relax."

"Vee?" Eight tilted her head curiously but complied. She looks at the little hammer and wonders what he was about to do with it.

She makes a little squeaking sound when her leg is hit. It kicks out in reflex, showing that her nervous system is indeed alright.

"Hee! That's a funny little trick." She smiled, intentionally kicking her foot out. "Do you only need that leg?" She did have eight of them, after all.

"Well, I could check your other legs, but I thought I'd check your arms, next." Ichigo guided Eight on how to hold her arm so he could tap the back of her elbow.

Meh, that would take too long. So instead of going through the effort of all that, Eight decided it would be much more expedient to shift into her octopus form.

"Here, try this!" She gurgled, her voice sounding like it was underwater.

Ichigo blinked in surprise and grinned. "Well now, that is handy. I will want to weigh you in both forms, just to see how it compares."

"VEE?!" Eight's tentacles stiffed a bit at the revelation. Understandable, she supposes, but it took her off guard. "Well, if you have to. That's not something that we usually feel is necessary." It was still her, after all.

"At least in my world, the laws of physics relate to conservation of matter. Meaning that just because you've changed your size and shape, you should still weigh the same. But physics might be different for you."

Yes, that makes sense. "It's true for us too. Well..."

"...unless we've absorbed too much enemy ink or water."

[strawberryprotector]

"So too much water is something you have to be wary of?" Ichigo made a note of that in her chart. "Are you still able to safely hydrate when you need it, or is any amount of water dangerous for you?"

The octopus hopped up and down with delight. "Of course! It would be really bad for us if we couldn't drink. We need that to survive!"

The importance was in moderation. She didn't need a lot, but she did need some.

"So moderation is key, huh? I can see how that would make sense, even humans can die from too much water. Though water intoxication isn't usually a problem." He'd only read about it in his textbooks, and even his father had never encountered any cases of it.

The octopus hopped up and down in played up irritation. "Weren't you going to test my reflexes?"

"Yes, yes I was." Ichigo laughed and grabbed the mallet. He chose one tentacle at random to start with, and tapped on it at different points up the length from her body out toward the tip.

"That tickles!" Feeling a bit playful, the octokid lupt up at Ichigo's chest.

Having the octokid leap at him surprised Ichigo, but he managed to catch her. Laughing, he set her back on the exam table. "Well then, I think I can spare the rest of your tentacles from the test then. You certainly do have excellent reaction times, though."

The test thus concluded, Eight reforms herself back on the table. She smirks as she occasionally kicks out her feet.

"I could have told you that, but then it wouldn't make for a very good exam to trust my word, right?" She had to fight to survive, and was reasonably sure that her reflexes was fine.

"What's next?"

"Next is height and weight, so over to the scale if you please." Ichigo made sure to stand out of her way so she could get up. "This way I'll be able to make sure you're getting enough nutrition on the train. Are you fully grown by your world's standards or are you still growing?"
