"Whoa-- no thank you," Devero says quickly, yanking his hand back. Grossed out by Eight? Unfamiliar with the gesture? Weird complex about touching? The only thing that's clear from the action is he is not about shaking her hand.

And yet, immediately after that, he says very politely, "I'm Devero." He makes a gesture with his other hand as he says it, quick and unconscious: thumb to forefinger, and a flick. "And you?"

Also polite: he does take the part in hand, but doesn't immediately start fiddling with it, apparently waiting to finish introductions first.
