She's just too unused to help being offered so readily, doesn't know what to do with it in any way that doesn't seem ridiculous. So the way she says it - it sounds more like she's thinking than anything else. Like she's trying to figure out what to even say to that.
"Not being cruel to others would be a start, but it seems that you've already got that down."
Especially since Devero did seem unkind at first, but the way he actually apologized for his impulsive behaviour is exactly what makes him kind. It's more than most people would do, as far as Alice sees it.
