"It can!" Gen smiled at him. He explained cheerfully, "It's a fancy way of saying that all of these made-up stories in these books, plays, movies, tv shows ... we know they're made up and pretend."
"But! We allow ourselves to be tricked, if it's convincing, or if it's fun, or we're enjoying the story," Gen told him. "So it's make believe, yes, but we 'suspend our disbelief', that's the way we put it. We know it's not real, but when it's well-written, we watch it anyway."
Gen told him, "But that's going to vary from person to person. Some things are too silly, or seem too fake, or too sappy, or too sad. It takes us out of the part of our mind that makes us want to enjoy watching or reading."
