[OPEN] Haibara adjusts

[ A: Before Mission - Quiet Car ]

Things were unraveling around Haibara. Secrets revealed from all sources, putting everybody in even further danger. But those unraveled threads of secrets and conspiracies were also coming back together, forming a tapestry of new norms and possibility. She was roomed with Mouri, she could mitigate the danger Ran was in while gaining another set of eyes and ears around her. Kudo knew that she had the antidote with her, but... no, honestly that part was bad, he was far too reckless with it. And then there was Masumi Sera, Haibara still didn't know what to make of her.

But the people around her were becoming more aware of and conscious of Haibara's role in the APTX-4869, and Haibara needed to think about how to continue work on the antidote. She couldn't hide from Vermouth forever, not and still pursue any sort of goal... and so she had braved the world outside her cabin.

She was back at the place she had tried to gain access to so long ago, when she had first arrived. A lab space created in the Quiet Car, by one Tony Stark. He had left the train some weeks ago, and so she figured the space would be open for all - assuming people hadn't simply taken the equipment from it. But what she didn't expect was...

"Why is this still locked?" Who would even manage a lab now?

Crud.

[ B: During mission - Medical & Triage Cars ]

Haibara had opted to stay behind again. But something nagged at her in the back of her mind, telling her to get up and stop being a burden, and she couldn't ignore it. In her mind, the best she could do now from the train was simply to make sure things were ready for those who came back.

And with her skills, that meant ensuring that the train was prepared to treat anybody who came back injured.

So she could be found in both the Medical and Triage Cars, organizing the medicines, ensuring the supplies were ready and sanitized properly, and in general doing a lot of things a seven-year-old shouldn't be doing.

Feel free to spot her and give her a talking to. Also if your character DOES come back injured, they might have to deal with the bedside manners of a little girl without manners.

[ C: After mission - Library ]

Haibara does make some trips out of her room. A girl still has to eat and shower, even if hiding for your life. But she might be growing more bold lately, even heading over to the Library Car to find some books to read. When she's sure there will be people around besides Vermouth.

Mostly, she seems to stick to mystery novels or non-fiction. The lengthy, boring kinds of non-fiction. It might deserve some comment...

Or it might just be a good place to run into her, if one is looking.

In the end, he does decide that Lego Tony needs his coffee and then looks up at the small strawberry blonde. He only vaguely remembers her but it wasn't like they were that close or he was in a great frame of mind when they met.

"Huh? Yeah. Peter, actually. Peter Parker." He offers, setting lego Tony by his desk. "Nah, it's usually unlocked I think-even if it wasn't that wouldn't really stop me." He could, after all, just yank the lock off. "It's changed a lot though. I hid some notes in here a while back. I'm hoping nobody found them."

Haibara hones in on the chemistry set in the lab, casually looking it over as if a curious child... instead of a discerning adult. "Parker, then." She doesn't do first names much, sorry. "What kind of notes would you have hidden?"

"Oh just, you know. Some stuff I was looking into I didn't want everyone to know about." Speaking of that though, he start gets down on his hands and knees and runs his hands over the floorboard, he activates his sticky powers for a moment and pulls the board up before reaching into the crevice pull out a think envelope of a bunch of loose leaf papers.

"Glad to know some things stay the same." He drops the board back where it goes and gets to his feet. "And uh, really Pete or Peter is fine."

Haibara pauses. Looks at the notes. Digests what Parker said.

"Are they the notes for Kudo-kun?"

Peter freezes, his face paling a little as he looks at the folder in his hand.

"Uh..."

...

"No?"

Haibara has been with Kudo on a frankly staggering number of cases. She's seen suspects and murderers lie through their teeth. Their lines ranged the spectrum of meticulously-crafted to absolutely bull. And yet somehow, Parker had found a way to lower the bar even further.

"So that is what they are. Hand them over, I'd like to take a look over them."


Pauses.



"Please."

Peter instinctively pulls them closer to himself. Somehow, someway, this tiny girl is making him feel like the child and now it's time to play WHEEL OF RESPONSES! And this time it looks like it's >Get Defensive.

"I never said that's what it was." He starts, getting defensive. "All I said is that it was something I didn't want other people to see-it could be my zombie apocalypse plan, you don't know." He says defiantly.

"I did say please." Haibara sighs. "Look. Reversing a process of apoptosis is potentially dangerous. I'd like to make sure you're not going to get anybody killed with amateur hour chemistry."



HAIBARA. MAKING FRIENDS. So friendly.

Making all the friendly friends. Also, Rude. He is a very good chemist. Even before Spider-Man he was a very good chemist.

"Yeah, I didn't want that either which is why I was having Mr Stark check my work-but chemistry is my thing. Well that and like... crime fighting but there's significantly less need of that here." however, in the interest of not accidentally killing someone, he finally relents and lets out a sigh before handing over the folder. For as messy as the stack of loose leaf papers are they're still in order.

"Mr Stark and I were getting ready to put together a first attempt but we were just gonna try it on a blood sample but I don't like needles so."

Haibara starts leafing through the papers, seemingly... actually absorbing all the notes and formulae. It's probably very obvious this isn't your average seven year old.

"....Hn." She hates to admit it, but the notes aren't too terrible. "Not bad. It's about on par with my own first attempt, at least." It requires a lot on conditions to work, but it would, given them.

You've been promoted from amateur hour to assistant hour. Congratulations.

That made sense since-oh. Realization dawned on him suddenly. Her first attempt. "Oh, you're the person that I based my notes off of." He admits, remembering that he'd had Conan request the notes on the cure sometime ago so he could study them. The original notes are probably even still in that mess of papers somewhere.

"Uh yeah, I went about it a different way though-I wanted something a little less uh... jarring and I'm trying to figure out how to make it last longer than just the initial twenty four hours. Thanks though, I uh-like I said I've gotta kind a knack for chemistry and before the radioactive spider thing I used to read pretty much all chemistry books. My dad was a chemist. Or at least that's what I was told. I don't actually remember."

"I don't think you're going to find a way out of it being 'jarring.'" After all, Apoptoxin-4869 works by killing off cells and forcing regrowth to an earlier state. Reversing that is going to be just as painful, no matter what you do.

"Going for length is what I've been steadily working towards. My goal is for a permanent cure, even if it'd be useless to us right now." These forms are too good at providing a cover identity for them to go back to teenagers fulltime.

"But I think I can." Peter says excitedly, moving over to her and leafing through the folder a second. "See, Mr Stark told me about this herb thing from uh Wakanda back where we live and I think if I can get some and add it to the mix it'll help with uh this enzyme here and basically-" And off he goes talking chemistry in far more complex way than I could manage. Added in are some discoveries from his world and mentions of extremis and how it originally worked and more science BS than I could possibly write out.

Haibara interjects and responds to the various science bullshit with counterexamples or asking clarifying questions, as appropriate. At the very least, she keeps up with the conversation even when the topics veer into things unique to Parker's world, albeit her own observations tend to be more grounded.

And ending with, "We'd need a lot of unique compounds to even test your ideas, though. Or expensive equipment. Or both. Had you been able to gather any of that?"

"Oh... well.. Mr Stark and I were gonna work on that but now all my points are gone and Mr Stark himself is..." He trails off and then glances at the lego display again.

"But uh, yeah. We had a pretty good plan to get it moving but then everything kinda fell through."

"The first thing we should worry about is getting a decent computer to run some computational analysis." Once your chemistry gets too complex it's better to run these numbers and formulae through a computer.

Also Haibara's a genius but she's not running-advanced-formula-in-her-head genius.

"I don't suppose Stark left one of those behind?"

"No. I don't think he did." Peter admits, trying to to think if by some chance he had seen Tony's Laptop around somewhere. "I have mine from home but it's uh, kinda old and I built it out of discarded pieces." He loves is laptop but he's also not sure it could run those kinds of equations.

"Karen probably could." But he doesn't have his old suit, just the one May had brought that didn't have what Peter's pretty sure was basically his AI Nanny.

Haibara just... assumes this kid names his computers. Karen, wow. Nice name.

"I guess that's something else to save up points for." Deep sigh.

She hands back over the notes.

He takes the notes back and looks them over again before setting them on what Tony had turned into a work table.

"Yeah, well. At least it's not near as expensive?" He offers with a small shrug. "So then if you know about Conan then are you um-uh... do you have the same er-condition?" How does he ask this delicately? He knows there's a huge amount of secrecy surrounding this whole project.

"'Cause you know, I'm a superhero so uh I'm happy to help if you two ever need someone to come in."

That causes Haibara some pause. Her reply, though, is simple. "What do you think?"

Put the onus on him rather than revealing her secret outright. Not that she left much room for doubt. There weren't many genius seven year olds who could create a poison like Apoptoxin-4869.
