A New Platform [Intro Post March]
On the Train
Once again passengers are awoken by the morning announcement.
"Good morning passengers, it is day One of the month of Kazoo. Points have been updated on the system."
They have indeed, and everyone can spend the morning shopping. Those who have been on the train for a while will also be expecting the second announcement that comes a few hours later.
"Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one." A lurch and a jolt and the windows fill with the fog that means they are at a platform. The fog is thick, the air is warm and humid and there are rumbles of thunder, the air heavy with the promise of rain.
As usual the first to leave the train notice nothing as they walk silently, rucksacks on their backs, towards the barriers: Alfredo Martini, Daia, Enna Alchiba, Lord El-Melloi II, Natsuno Yuuki, Nita Callahan, Saku Gyousou, Sakura, V and Wen Qing
But on the platform itself there are new faces. Wearing hoodies in all four colours, in various states of confusion.
For New Passengers
At first all they can see is steam, billowing around them as they come to their senses. As their eyes adjust, they will see they are on a platform, glass and dark stone rising in sturdy arches around them. Behind them is a set of barriers, and in front of them is a single track extending both ways into thick fog.
They are standing, in clothes that are not their own and a style they might not even recognise. They are carrying a rucksack on their back. For a moment it seems to just be them, alone in the white haze; then the steam begins to fade and they realise they aren’t alone.
The platform is not large, and seems smaller with twenty-seven figures scattered around. All facing the tracks, all dressed in cargo trousers and hoodies. To both the left and right, tracks disappear into the mist.
A roaring sound, and out of the fog arrives a train. Jet black with gold writing on the side. The Voidtrecker Express. There is a hiss as the doors slide open and out step a strange assortment of people. Some are human, some are less so. Most are wearing the same hoodie in one of the four colours, red, orange, blue and purple, though some are sporting different clothes in a variety of styles.
The Train
After a short time, the doors hiss open again. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there's anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would lead to something terrible. If that is not enough, there are plenty of people on the platform now, to encourage them onto the train.
Each ICP shows the same message and next to the screens there are stacks of leaflets written by those on the train, with further information (see
'Publications'). Those not new to the train will note the addition of an eighth sleeper carriage. The store rooms have been restocked with fresh ingredients, it seems the month of Kazoo is defined by the tomato and there are plenty of them.
For passengers that have bought items, these are also scattered around the luggage carriage in various suitcases and bags.
New passengers will find their ticket allows them into their cabins. They may need to negotiate for beds, especially if they want a top bunk!
Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches full of spare blankets and pillows.
Departure
A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers as thunder rumbles further and the storm threatens to break. The doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, but they may wish to brief their new companions.
The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view again as it picks up speed.
"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express." A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."
The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog-filled sky.
"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated. Entry into Voidspace in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."
A shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding. As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady itself. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever-changing colours.
Welcome to the Void!

Welcome to the Void!

"It is nice to meet you, Madoka."
Politeness isn't completely beyond the people in this place, but he accepts it gleefully. It's nice to feel at least some measure of comfort for now.
"Televisions?" Jiang Cheng frowns. He's never heard of them - he'd be more happy if he was fighting monsters or creatures of the night. It would at least make sense.
no subject
But him not knowing about them does give her a tad of an idea of what kind of world he is from, at the very least.
"But not everyone who's here on the train has heard of them. Some have, and some haven't.. That's how different the places we all come from are." For a moment the girl grows quiet, clearly thinking, but then she adds: "But it's possible that you will find others from the place you're from here on the train, sir. I'm not the only one from my home world here either!"
no subject
He wonders what else there is for him to learn.
"Then there's something to learn." Jiang Cheng nods. "How common is it? For there to be others from where we're from?"
no subject
Because it's a hard question to give a precise answer to, which is - in the end - what she decides to just admit.
"It really depends. I was here for months before someone from the same place as me showed up. Some other people have been here for a really long time and are still entirely by themselves. And then there's some people who have a lot of people they know from back home right here on the train with them."
In other words: it's a very, very varied thing.
".. maybe I could help you? I don't know everyone on the train, but I know a lot of people.. Maybe I'd recognize some names if you named people you were close to back home."
no subject
At least there is some kindness being offered, and Jiang Cheng can accept that without feeling too guilty.
"I can name a few," he agrees, though he looks a little uncomfortable. Who is he even close to these days? "Jin Ling. Lan Xichen." Who else? There's some names he doesn't even consider saying, but he has to, especially with how things have been lately.
"Wei Wuxian."
no subject
No one she is super close with, but on the other hand, it's hard to miss people's names entirely when you're stuck on a train. It's a relatively small space, no matter how much longer this train may be than most ordinary ones.
"Especially that last one! I know he's on the train for sure, sir. And some of the other names sound a little familiar too, so they may be here as well.." Though the girl's voice trails off a bit, as if she's slightly more unsure about that part. "At the very least it means you won't be alone!"
no subject
Jiang Cheng almost winces, physically forcing himself to calm down as he tries not to think about Wei Wuxian being here. There's a chance that Zewu-jun might be here, that his nephew might be here... That they're recognised is a good sign.
Still, he had seen the ghost of Wen Qing. That makes him think.
"Is a woman here? Wen Qing?"
no subject
Then her gaze slides from where it's lingering on his face over in the direction of the gates at the other end of the platform.
".. She was, but she just left." Madoka is unsure if he saw Wen Qing leave the train. Probably not, if he's asking about her, right? Still, she figures that explanation may be a little vague, so she does add to it after a moment. "S-Sometimes people leave the train, but it's not because they asked to or found a way out.. They just mysteriously leave sometimes when the train stops at a platform. Random people will suddenly walk out of the train and through the gates, and no matter how much you call out for them, they won't notice you.. It's really weird."
And kind of sad, as evidenced by Madoka's now more somber facial expression.
no subject
Jiang Cheng has to swallow, looking over at the gates. On his hand, his Zidian sparks, little snaps of purple before he breathes out and forces himself to calm down; there's no need to get angry, there's no need to upset this girl just because he's miserable about something unavoidable.
"Can they come back?"
Will she come back again?
no subject
Her voice is quiet. But whereas Madoka usually would get scared in the face of anger only barely being contained right under the surface, especially with those sparks flying around the man's hand, right now fear isn't the main thing she's feeling.
It's obvious from her expression. There's sympathy in it, as if she's realising that may have been someone really important to him. And Madoka understands how much it hurts to be separated from someone you care for.
"But.. it's hard to be sure, sir. The train is really fickle when it comes to who it brings here and who it sends away.. It really doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense to me at all."
no subject
He shakes his head, forcing himself to ignore it. Wen Qing isn't here, she's not present, so he doesn't have to think about those thoughts at all. He doesn't have to imagine what might happen if the two of them came face to face with one another.
"... That's fine." He nods his head, forcing himself to accept it. "If she comes back then she comes back."
no subject
But then her head dips into a nod.
"Then.. you should probably go take a look at the train." She gestures at the vehicle behind them. "There's a lot to see on it.. um, probably even some things you've never seen before. So please take your time to settle in, and.. if there's anything you need help with, please look for me, alright? I never mind helping out."
