On the Train

Once again passengers are awoken by the morning announcement.

"Good morning passengers, it is day One of the month of Kazoo. Points have been updated on the system."

They have indeed, and everyone can spend the morning shopping. Those who have been on the train for a while will also be expecting the second announcement that comes a few hours later.

"Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one." A lurch and a jolt and the windows fill with the fog that means they are at a platform. The fog is thick, the air is warm and humid and there are rumbles of thunder, the air heavy with the promise of rain.

As usual the first to leave the train notice nothing as they walk silently, rucksacks on their backs, towards the barriers: Alfredo Martini, Daia, Enna Alchiba, Lord El-Melloi II, Natsuno Yuuki, Nita Callahan, Saku Gyousou, Sakura, V and Wen Qing

But on the platform itself there are new faces. Wearing hoodies in all four colours, in various states of confusion.

For New Passengers

At first all they can see is steam, billowing around them as they come to their senses. As their eyes adjust, they will see they are on a platform, glass and dark stone rising in sturdy arches around them. Behind them is a set of barriers, and in front of them is a single track extending both ways into thick fog.

They are standing, in clothes that are not their own and a style they might not even recognise. They are carrying a rucksack on their back. For a moment it seems to just be them, alone in the white haze; then the steam begins to fade and they realise they aren’t alone.

The platform is not large, and seems smaller with twenty-seven figures scattered around. All facing the tracks, all dressed in cargo trousers and hoodies. To both the left and right, tracks disappear into the mist.

A roaring sound, and out of the fog arrives a train. Jet black with gold writing on the side. The Voidtrecker Express. There is a hiss as the doors slide open and out step a strange assortment of people. Some are human, some are less so. Most are wearing the same hoodie in one of the four colours, red, orange, blue and purple, though some are sporting different clothes in a variety of styles.

The Train

After a short time, the doors hiss open again. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there's anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would lead to something terrible. If that is not enough, there are plenty of people on the platform now, to encourage them onto the train.

Each ICP shows the same message and next to the screens there are stacks of leaflets written by those on the train, with further information (see
'Publications'). Those not new to the train will note the addition of an eighth sleeper carriage. The store rooms have been restocked with fresh ingredients, it seems the month of Kazoo is defined by the tomato and there are plenty of them.

For passengers that have bought items, these are also scattered around the luggage carriage in various suitcases and bags.

New passengers will find their ticket allows them into their cabins. They may need to negotiate for beds, especially if they want a top bunk!

Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches full of spare blankets and pillows.

Departure

A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers as thunder rumbles further and the storm threatens to break. The doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, but they may wish to brief their new companions.

The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view again as it picks up speed.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express." A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog-filled sky.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated. Entry into Voidspace in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."

A shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding. As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady itself. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever-changing colours.

"That's definitely true." While she didn't mind having the free time, she did wonder if she was getting a bit too lax.

"Well, I think they're cute. They're a couple of my favorite outfits." She brightened up a bit, because it had been a while she'd gotten to just talk about clothes. "You wanna see?"

"I would love to see. I am always curious about the style of clothes other worlds have compared to my own." She gives a little twirl in the dress she got a good while back.

"People seem to wear thing much different from my own after all and usually involves pants."

Kitty laughed a little. "Well, as much as I love skirts and dresses, pants are a little easier to move around in. But yeah, I can definitely show you, if you wanna drop by my cabin."

"I would love to." She was honestly curious and maybe it will make her want to make stuff in the future. Who knows really.

"Cool!" She nodded her head down towards the hall. "Let's go."

She nodded happily as she started to walk. As much as she had been trying to avoid people, she was kinda accepting that at this point that was not something she could do.

Making sure she had all her packages secure, she walked with Rapunzel down the corridors towards the sleeper cabins. They did have a bit of a ways to go, so after a moment or two passed she asked, "So what's up? You been doing okay after all the stuff from a few days ago?"

"I've been doing fine. perfectly fine. I mean compared to others I was barely affected, so my worry is more on how everyone else is." She was at least being honest in that aspect.

Kitty nodded. "Yeah, I get that. I'm worried about a lot of people too. But just be careful, okay? You can stretch yourself out too thin if you worry too much over everyone else."

"I'll be fine." Okay she very much wasn't but was hiding it behind her usual demeaner.

"I'd let someone know if I wasn't."

Kitty frowned a little. She didn't want to doubt the other girl, but she was learning there were a lot of people on this train that pretended to be fine when they weren't.

Still, she nodded again. "All right...Just let me know if you wanted to talk, okay?"

"I will at least keep it in mind." While she didn't want to be a bother to people, she much rather wanted to make people happy and to have them like her. With what she would want to talk about her worry of people not liking her is a thing.

But it was also something that could change with time.

"I always enjoy talks after all."

That was all she could really ask for, and she smiled. "Yeah, it can be fun talking with friends."

Reaching her sleeper cabin, Kitty pulled out her ticket to open the door and let them both inside. The bunks had been folded up, and she gestured to one of the benches as she started putting her things down. "Go ahead and take a seat if you want, this could take a minute."

She nodded slightly as she went to take a seat as she looked over at the other.

"Okay, I have taken a seat and I guess all cabins are the same. I think this is the first time I've been in someone else's."

"That makes sense," Kitty said as she carefully unpacked her things. "If all the sleeper cabins are the same, it's not like people can really fight about rooms."

Going through the suitcase, she picked out a few of her clothes for her first outfit before holding it up to show Rapunzel.

"Tadah! What do you think?"

Rapunzel nodded slightly. "The only thing people might fight about is if they have someone they want to share a cabin with."

But soon the focus was back on the clothing as Rapunzel clapped happily. "It's really cute."

"Yeah, that's true. Or if they're sharing a cabin with someone they don't want to be in an enclosed space with."

Kitty beamed, carefully placing the outfit on the opposite bench. "Thanks! This one is one of my favorites." Going back to the suitcase, she pulls out a different outfit, though didn't hold it up right away. "This one isn't really for everyday wear, but it's still something I wear back home sometimes."

"That would also make sense."

Rapunzel smiled, gently kicking her legs with slight excitement as she watched the other, wondering just what they were getting out next.

"If it's not everyday wear what do you wear it for?"

Rising to her feet, she holds the suit up to her body. "Well, back home, I'm part of a team that goes on missions, kind of like the ones we do here. This is the uniform I'd wear on those missions."

"So there are things similar to the current situation we are on?" Because it seemed like that was at least the case anyway.

[goingthroughaphase]

"Kinda similar, yeah. We wouldn't travel to other worlds, and most of them were in the same place. But we did travel to other countries occasionally, and there was usually some danger involved."

"So instead of worlds it eas other places in your world. That makes sense, doing this seems awfully rare it seems." At least not many people seem to travel worlds

"Yeah. To be honest, I didn't think it was possible to travel to other worlds until I got here. Even the idea of life on other planets is still something that we're unsure about in my world, so even if other worlds existed we wouldn't have known about it."

"Same here. Though I wouldn't have known either way because of my living situation." Living in a tower 27/7 you really don't know anything that goes on outside of it and mother made sure she didn't know as well.

So she couldn't be certain people couldn't go to other worlds where she was from.

Folding the uniform and putting it aside, Kitty gathers the pieces of her last outfit. "Really?" She's pieced together a few things about Rapunzel's world from what the other girl has said, but she doesn't know all the details. "What was it like for you, back home?"
