A New Platform [Intro Post July]

On the Train

Like clockwork, the Voidtreckers are awoken by a familiar message this morning.

"Good morning Voidtreckers, it is day one of the month of Merriment. Points have been updated on the system."

With points updated, everyone can spend the morning shopping. Most people will be expecting the second announcement that comes a few hours later.

"Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one." A lurch and a jolt and the windows fill with the fog that means they are at a platform. Without the fog, it would be difficult to tell they'd made the transition out of the Void - the platform is dark, save for soft blue lights high up in the ceiling.

The doors open. As usual, those who leave first notice nothing, walking silently, rucksacks on their backs, towards the barriers. Luke fon Fabre, Lan Wangji, Xiao Xingchen, Ann Takamaki, Meng Yao, Cleopatra Selene II, Jaisyn Solo, Rogue, Adam Parrish, Yuume Souryuu, Pepper Potts, Ray, Futaba Sakura, Beetlejuice, Tony Stark, Kotoha Kakimoto and 47; all pass across the platform, not looking back. And then they're gone, disappeared through the barriers and into the fog beyond.

But on the platform itself there are new faces. Wearing hoodies in all four colours, in various states of confusion.

For New Passengers

At first all they can see is steam billowing around them as they come to their senses. As their eyes adjust, they find themselves on a platform. The grey tiles underfoot and the concrete arches overhead are hard to discern for those with ordinary eyesight; the area is almost pitch black. At the first motion among the newcomers, however, faint blue light suffuses the area from above - striplights have been activated. Behind them is a set of barriers, half-sunk into a wall of fog, and in front of them is a single set of tracks extending both ways into that same thick fog. The air is cool and still, almost stagnant, save for the slight breeze coming along the tracks.

They are standing, in clothes that are not their own and a style they might not even recognise. They are carrying a rucksack on their back. For a moment it seems to just be them, alone in the dark haze; then the fog begins to fade and they realise they aren’t alone.

The platform isn't large, and seems smaller with twelve figures scattered around, all facing the tracks, all dressed in cargo trousers and hoodies. Then there is a roaring sound and out of the fog arrives a train. Jet black with gold writing on the side. The Voidtrecker Express. There is a hiss as the doors slide open and out pours a strange assortment of people, over a hundred at least. Some are human, some are less so. Most are wearing the same hoodie in one of the four colours, red, orange, blue and purple, though some are sporting different clothes in a variety of styles.

Behind them, the doors close, and the train is cloaked in the same fog that hides the world beyond the platform.

The Train

After a short time, perhaps ten minutes or so, the fog clears and the doors hiss open again. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there's anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would lead to something terrible. If that is not enough, there are plenty of people on the platform now, to encourage them onto the train.

Each ICP shows the same message and next to the screens there are stacks of leaflets written by those on the train, with further information (see
'Publications'). The store rooms have been restocked with fresh ingredients, including several crates of coconuts, bottles of coconut oil and tins of coconut milk, the ingredient of the month of Merriment, as well as all sundries.

For passengers that have bought items, these are also scattered around the luggage carriage in various suitcases and bags. For each member of Purple Team, a small golden cardboard box with their name on it contains a slice of cake.

New passengers will find their ticket allows them into their cabins. In most rooms, the occupied beds are obvious, leaving the spotless, empty spaces for the newcomers. Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches full of spare blankets and pillows.

Departure

A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers taking advantage of the arguably fresh air, and the doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, but they may wish to brief their new companions.

The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view again as it picks up speed.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express." A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog-filled sky.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated. Entry into Voidspace in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."

A shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding. As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady itself. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever-changing colours.

Welcome to the Void!

Rui had a little bundle of little cookies that suddenly someone was plucking one away from her.

"Hey!" She reacted a little noisily at first, then blushed and exhaled slowly. "Those are mine."

She couldn't help but frown at him.

"Oh, they are?" Phil was almost unintelligible thanks to his mouth full of cookie crumbs.

"Sorry about that. My bad." He offered a finger-gun with his free hand and ate another cookie.

She couldn't help but notice that her somewhat gentle warning hadn't stopped him from helping himself.

"That's-" Her brow furrowed and she just sighed.

Some things weren't worth a fight. She held out the rest to him. "Here."

Phil gladly took the rest of the cookies. He knew how much junk food he could eat down to the ounce, and he hadn't hit his limit yet.

"Thanks," he said as an afterthought. "So are you an alien duck bug monster too? In disguise? Because no offense, but you look like a human person."

"I am a human person." Rui said with a bit of a frown. She couldn't say she was ordinary for myriad metrics, but she was completely human.

"I'm not sure who you met, but the majority of people are just humans here."

"Great! I love humans. Actually, most of my friends are human."

He smiled, but it faded quickly. "Right. Is it cold in here or is it just you?"

He was the most perplexing person she'd encountered since being on the train.

"I...apologize." She was the kind of person who was a bit of a hermit really, so this was different.

"Is there something I can help you with?"

Phil was used to annoyance, hatred, pandering, eagerness, fan-squeals, flirtation, loathing, laughter. But mild indifference? No, he hadn't gotten that one in a long time.

"Yeah, actually. You know where they keep the liquor around here? Or the coffee? Or both." He tosses a cookie in his hand idly. "No, wait, let me answer that for you: No. You don't. Because you're clearly not on anything fun."

"For one thing, I'm not old enough to drink." Rui said, a little bit of annoyance in her voice. That actually wasn't true for the train, but she didn't know that.

"But I do actually know where the coffee is. It can be found in the dining carriage."

"Sounds great, sunshine." Phil considers the last cookie, takes a bite, and hands it back to Rui. He then slips his arm around the crook of her elbow so they're arm-in-arm. It's a casual touch and Rui could easily get out, although Phil doesn't expect her to.

"Lead the way. Give me the grand tour."

What was she going to do with a cookie that he bit? Rui made a bit of a face.

She was even less impressed with the grabbing of her arm, it was so incredibly rude. She sighed, soft and hoping he wasn't paying too much attention to that. Rui would slide her arm away.

"Please follow me and I'll show you." She offered politely.

Phil rolled his eyes but didn't object. Women used to treat him like this on his first few Groundhog Days. (One woman in particular still did right up until Phil was yanked onto the train.) "I thought that's what I was doing."

Phil sized her up before following. Maybe she didn't like men? That would explain it.

"Please. Please tell me the coffee here is decent." Maybe Phil would never see another sunrise, but was there still hope for him to have a cup of non-burnt coffee? At this point, those were the top goals on his bucket list.

"The coffee is not terrible. It's a cheaper brand of coffee, but if you make it strong enough, it will keep you going for along time." Rui explained, brushing off his dismay at not being able to manhandle her.

That was just a bit uncomfortable, and it had been unexpected. Who grabbed onto a stranger after all? In her experience, no one terribly good.

"If you earn some points and you have a favourite brand, you can always order that in a couple of weeks."
theotherphil: (smug bastard)

[personal profile] theotherphil 2021-07-03 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Phil perked up. "Anything decent? Espresso drinks? Or just diner coffee?" He made a face. "I'd even take that Starbucks crap at this point."

He slipped his ticket out of his rucksack, glancing at it. He had a zero-point balance already. "A couple of weeks doesn't do much for me, sweetheart. I'll find some other way of getting points."
partofthecrowd: (Thinking)

[personal profile] partofthecrowd 2021-07-04 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
"I haven't seen an espresso machine, but I know there's one for foaming milk. It's not quite as bad as a diner, I think." She responded as she thought over the options.

"You can certainly try, but no one knows how they're earned, and they're not transferrable. It's obvious beacuse that's not an option when you fool around on the ordering device. They tend to get updated every two weeks based on whatever metric the train uses to give us points." She did okay in points, as far as she was concerned, but she didn't get that many.
theotherphil: (grin)

[personal profile] theotherphil 2021-07-04 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, what, a latte machine without espresso?" Phil is getting oddly excited at the thought. "That's free, right? No credits for that one?"

He seems much more interested in the coffee now than the train or Rui herself.
partofthecrowd: (Default)

[personal profile] partofthecrowd 2021-07-04 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
"That's right. The credits are just for special orders. The food in the kitchen and pantry provided, that's all free. It's just the snack machine and the other machine where you need points."

Hopefully that would cheer him up a little bit and he might be a little less...aggravating.

"That's a stupid rule. Who the hell is running this thing?"

Although their loss was everyone else's gain, he guessed.

"The train itself, as far as I can tell. It seems to be artificial intelligence of some kind." She observed wryly.

"It's not big on giving us many choices either."
