Who: Eight and people she's interacting with Where: Jinnjar adventures hoo When: Days 1-4 of Mission (M4-7) What: Continuing Threads Due to Captcha Warnings: Anxiety, Teenage Antics, and Not-Gilfriends
Mimi nods, more attentive to how she approaches the sea creatures. When she went to save them, it was more of a retrieval... she didn't really get to interact with them, nor was she aware of anything special she was supposed to do.
A soft smile forms as she cautiously begins to dip her hand into the water. The smile widens as she sees them start to move towards the food.
The sheep shells continue over, their feelers tasting the water and soon Mimi's hand as they draw closer to the food. It's a bit ticklish, but the soft algae "fur" isn't slimy or sticky. The sheep shells are just pleasant to hold. The feelers will pull bits of food, and the sheep shells don't mind if they are petted.
"Yeah, just like that. See? They like you already."
"We'll feed them as long as they're interested. Some ate earlier, so they aren't hungry. You'll be able to tell because they'll go back to the rocks to snooze. They kinda remind me of Barnaby... if Barnaby went flat."
Barnaby is her sea slug pet who is a downright tsundere when called a bunny, but he's also super fuzzy and adorable. "The chicken shrimps and peanut butter jellyfish aren't nearly as cuddly as these ones, but they can still be fun to feed."
Mimi has no problem with patience, especially if it means that she could spend more time with Nory. She's gentle with them as they approach, and plays with them a little, pulling the food away for them to catch it. Once the sheep shells gets close she'd stop, letting them feed.
After a while the sheep shells all seem satisfied. Realizing that they would be moving soon, Mimi takes out her cell phone and takes a picture of them both.
At the selfie (shellfie?), Nory will give a little peace sign towards the camera. The sheep shells are all content with their bellies full. They form a fuzzy mass at the rocks.
"How about I show you the chicken shrimps next? Those were the ones the scientist really wanted to use for evil." She'll lead them both to a tank where huge shrimp inhabit a large tank. The shrimp are about the size of chickens and similarly colored like a classic white with a red crest on top of their heads. They're kinda goofy looking all in all.
How exactly they were going to be used by the evil scientist is questionable, but evil scientists have their own logic.
Eight stopped when she got a good look at the "chicken shrimp." Oh, she remembers these fellahs all right. She wasn't entirely sure what their deal was, but when she was assigned to catch them she had the most trouble bringing them in. They eventually settled on getting a big hand-held net to scoop one in at a time and hold on for dear life as it tried to swim away. They were fast and would turn violently, but eventually they would tuck themselves out and would be brought aboard to the safety tank set up on the team boat. Well... that's what she had to do. Other members of her team had water-based powers that could easily pluck them out of the water, she had to do it the hard way.
There is a handful that seem to recognize Mimi as well, and are swimming to the other side of the tank at her presence. "...ah... they remember me..."
Nory laughs, all smiles, as the chicken shrimp swim towards Mimi. "They do. They're not that friendly with me yet, but you got them to instantly come over." She takes a few snapshots to show her parents. Maybe this would give Mimi access on her own in the future, and it could be something interesting for them to study. Have chicken shrimp been known to imprint on an individual so strongly?
She goes to a mini fridge and pulls out a tray of strange looking ice cubes. "These are a special blend of food and nutrition made just for them. Think of it like frozen kelp and seafood smoothies. I usually chuck them in at random parts of the tank to watch them chase after them. However, you could probably hand feed them since they already trust you."
There's small ladder to a platform which will allow them access to the top of the tank, and there goes Nory, already climbing up there.
Mimi rubs her elbow for where one of the chicken shrimp slapped her into the bottom of the coastline. She wasn't thrilled at the idea of hand-feeding them. But then she glanced back at Nory's smiling face. Cod dam it, she was going to have to do this. Mimi swallows as Nory goes on ahead, hoping that things don't go too badly.
Finding her bravery, she took a few steps to the top of the tank, forcing a smile for Nory's sake. "Can these hurt you?" She means more for Nory, but there was some worry on her side as well.
"Nah, these guys will be chill. They haven't been stressed out like they were after being shrimpnapped. Plus, you have food. Everyone's happier when they're brought food."
So clearly, Nory would be fine, and Mimi will be fine. Nory tosses a cube into the tank. One of the chicken shrimp darts off after it like it's a tasty game.
Mimi nodded, a little relieved that things wouldn't go quite the same way. She takes the lead that she's supposed to hand feed them and leans down over the tank with a handful of cubes. True to their namesake, a small flock of chicken shrimp begin congregating around the food. They start with a slow trickle but begin to crowd her hand. Far from being uncomfortable, the feelers begin to tickle her hand.
"Hehe... h-hey! S-stop! You're all eely ticklish!!"
Nory watches, all smiles. Ocean sea life is so cool. How could anyone think about not taking of all the creature in it. Only the freshest people alive do. The rest are pond scum.
"Here! Lemme borrow your phone!" And once Nory has access, she'll snap a few shots of Mimi feeding the chicken shrimp. They're kinda cute when, and when their claws click, it makes a "clucking" noise. (She may have snapped a silly shellfie before returning it.)
Nory getting into it helped Mimi get into it too, and she's now taking time between tossing some food out away from her and setting some food close, to help break up the mob. She smiles widely at the camera and gestures at the camera.
Mimi loved every moment of this. She didn't want it to end. "What's next?"
Wrap up/handwave the rest to concentrate on the other threads?
This has been a lot of fun. It's rare that Nory finds someone with the same enthusiasm for the sea creatures as she does.
"Did you want to see the peanut butter jellyfish? We can't really play with them, but you can see how the aquarium raises them from tiny little specs to something bigger than a dinner plate!" Nory shakes off the water from her hands and moves towards another door. Despite the question, she expects the answer from Mimi is yes.
"I'll be right there!" Eight smiles, taking a moment to wash her hands to get ready to feed them as well. Nory could tell her jump in the shark tank and she would be willing to do it. When she got up today she wondered if they would ever meet like this, but now that they were on a first-name basis!
As she rushed down the stairwell, Mimi ran toward the door. No matter what, she was going to remember this day for the rest of her life.
Only one idea came to mind and she wasn't sure if it was going to work. She gripped him by the arms hard -- that flailing wasn't going to do any of them good and takes a deep breath of armor. Stay with her, Tidus. Eyes on her. Eyes on her.
Spitting out the water from her mouth she reaches over Tidus and presses her mouth against her lips. Please... please have her bodies convert the water into air Tidus could breathe...
You know what can stop you flailing, surprisingly enough? A kiss. ...mouth-to-mouth, technically, but that's what we call the kiss of life here, buddy!
And it happening unexpectedly can catch you off-guard, though that isn't the part of this that has Tidus continuing to freeze. It's when - with Mimi's lips to his - there comes the sensation of the water he felt in his lungs turning into the oxygen he was searching for. Into the air he needed to breathe.
Tidus can't move his arms, but he'd only do with them now as Mimi is already doing - holding on for the support, with eyes wide open, regardless of the sting.
Thankfully, he'll think to close his mouth after they part - and hopefully, they can rise to the surface from there.
The loss of muscle tone and movement of the limbs was enough to get her heart rate to quicken, and she opens her eyes to see if Tidus's condition had got worse. She is relieved to see that his eyes are returning the gesture. He was fine, if a bit surprised.
When they part, she looks up to see how deep they had gotten. Pretty deep. She knew she could get them up, but they would be relying on her to do so. For insurance she takes another deep gulp of air to repeat the procedure one more time.
When she feels he's in a good way or he gives her the gesture to continue, she begins to slowly push their way up to the surface.
"Okay~ but if you pass out from looking at her, that's on you." It was a soft rib between friends.
She shows a selfie of Mimi and a a green-haired girl scooping her hands into a large touch tank. Mimi appears to be smiling, her eyes just as much on the girl next to her as it is on the phone taking the photo.
"Oh..." She just realized that fact for herself. M-Maybe he wouldn't notice?
There's no way Inigo can't notice that. It's so obvious the moment he looks at Mimi's face - the face of the one on the photo, anyway. It makes his smile grow even larger, because.. aww. Just look at it. Mimi's puppy crush is just adorable, and it makes him even more determined to somehow make sure that it ends well.
He can't have his friend get her heart broken.
"Her hair is pretty cool," he at first says. Neutrally, perhaps giving Mimi a false sense of security, but.. nope. Then it's added: "And someone seems to be liking her a whole lot."
At first she thought she got away with it, but that only makes the inevitable tug of embarrassment as the noose drops all the more harsher. She recoils back, burying her reddening face into the crack of the seat she is sitting on.
He says, calling out her name multiple times, not even able to hide the mirth in his voice. Considering that Inigo is usually the one brought to such a state - over the smallest of things, even - it's kind of funny and cute to see it happening to someone else for once.
But it's not like he wants his friend to feel embarrassed to death, so he gently puts a hand on her shoulder, rocking her a little.
"Come on, you don't have to be embarrassed! It's totally natural to like someone!"
"You're a jerk, Inigo!" She pouted, still not moving from her position. Given a while longer she'll begin to start to calm but for now she is a mess of feelings.
Thankfully he's well aware that this is just a pouty embarrassed kind of fit, and that she doesn't really mean any of the words she's saying right now. It's what allows him to just hum, seemingly in still just as much of a good mood as a few moments ago.
"Would I still be a jerk if I could get you a date with her?"
If there was anything to break her out of an embarrassed fit, it was that. The tips of her tentacle hair peak up and she shift her body away from the corner. "...can you really?"
He smiles at her. Sure, it's a grin that's practically spreading from ear to ear, but it's a smile all the same.
"Are you doubting your amazing friend?" .. not that it wouldn't be a valid doubt, considering it's not like Inigo is scoring dates left and right over here, but still.. "You know how charming I am! There's no way I couldn't convince her to go on a date with you. It's not as if you're a bad catch!"
"Inigo, you will get within three feet of her and forget what you were going to say." She's seen him try. Hell, she even supported his attempts and tried to wing(wo)man for him.
"Don't make fun of me." It's not fully what she's doing here, but she definitely is embarrassing him, so. It counts. It's all the same to Inigo. "I can at least muster up enough courage to talk to a girl when it's for your sake, you know. If you just keep staring at her all lovey-dovey from a distance, nothing is going to happen! You need to make some move!"
Or else he'll make it for her! Somehow!
Even if it might end up being done very awkwardly, knowing Inigo.
"I..." Honesty. She wanted to be honest with him. One of the reasons why Mimi trusted Inigo is because he was the one person that she wasn't worried of expressing those hidden thoughts and quiet hurts she couldn't share with everyone else.
"I know you will do your best, Inigo." She gazed up at the ceiling. "...I just don't think I'm ready to take things to that level yet."
Inigo waves his hand in his face a little. As if getting some cool air may somehow cause his cheeks to cool off enough for the blush to fade, because he doesn't want to be blushing in the face of a topic that's clearly so important to her.
Yet, of course, it's not helping a thing. Which means that his face is still pretty red as he speaks up with: "Why are you scared?"
It's not that he doesn't believe her. Mimi wouldn't say something like that if she didn't mean it! And while he can think of a few reasons, he wouldn't want to assume anything - hence why he wants to hear it from her mouth instead.
Her head lowers. "You know I was in the orphanage for a long time, right? It was too long for a little girl to be in that place... the other kids would make fun of my tentacles and push and shove me and I would just... want to be by myself. To shut the world out because I knew I was never going to be a part of it."
"And then I was adopted. Caleb and Essek... they rescued me. At first, I didn't know what to do." She chuckles weakly. "I would try to stay quiet and not give them a reason to want to get rid of me. Or... maybe I was just scared that they would hurt me too, I don't know."
"I don't... do relationships, Inigo. I think... I'm scared of being hurt or... maybe I'm scared of hoping... or maybe I'm scare of what happens next... or maybe its of losing something precious once I find it."
She gives him a look at that last point a warm smile on her face. "Its why you mean a lot to me, Inigo. I'm not scared around you."
"Hey.." He slowly drapes an arm over her shoulder.
Inigo gets it though. Everything she's saying makes sense. With the way she grew up - without parents or a family, unlike Inigo, until she was adopted. With the way she looks different than most people here, even if not everyone looks exactly like Inigo. Of course this sort of stuff would be more scary. But..
"I'm glad you're not scared around me." He says, with a smile. Partially since he feels honoured, but also since he would have wished Mimi had someone like him around, even if she and Inigo somehow hadn't become friends. "But.. isn't there a part of you that would like to try it? Even if it's just a little bit..?"
Inigo squeezes her shoulder on the opposite side of him a little, before moving his arm off her again.
"Okay." Not like he'd want to push her beyond her comfort, after all. Mimi's already gone through enough in her life. "But once you do think you feel comfortable with more.. Don't let anything hold you back, alright? More than anything, I really want you to be happy."
Mimi reaches over to give Inigo a hug... a strange feeling of unease coming as she does. Strange, they did this many times before but something about hugging felt... foreign? Only now that she was hugging, it felt like the most natural thing to her.
Mimi gently pulled her phone away to get a closer look at the screen. That was her wasn't it...? But she never made a video like that... right? Why did it seem like it was fighting against an invisible force?
Sadly the more she stares at the screen the blurrier the memory becomes. She shakes her head. "...no... I don't remember any of that."
That seems kind of convenient, doesn't it? But my dad's skin is purple, and he doesn't turn things purple by touching it."
"Well... they are kinda tough to handle..." But she doesn't look like she's opposed to the idea. "They're big and thick and have suction cups, so no one has really tried."
"I will be. Don't worry, I'm great at braids," she said, moving behind her. She'll then start attempting to braid the tentacles, being careful to not pull too hard.
The tentacles cold on the edge, but the center is warm. They also don't behave quite like tentacles, behaving more like especially firm jello. After a while she can get the hang of it, and find that she could even split the tentacles without harming her.
As for the girl, she's quietly waiting while Dani does her thing. As she gets nearer to completion a bout of childish impatience begins to grip her, pulling her head away with frequent "Is it done yet?"
"Hmm? What is it, Money?" Cats need time to get used to their new names, so she is going to get started early. She turns to look at what he is looking at.
