It might have surprised her, but he actually didn't. He was shy and awkward and was not great at the whole making friends thing all together.
"Thanks Madoka." He did smiled warmly for her however. She could disappear, but he wasn't really thinking about that.
Even if it would hurt later, it would be better to have friends in the meantime.
