A New Platform [Intro Post November]

On the Train

The train continues its journey

"Good morning Voidtreckers, it is day one of the month of Orchestraa. Points have been updated on the system."

With points updated, everyone can spend the morning shopping. Most people will be expecting the second announcement that comes a few hours later.

"Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one." A lurch and a jolt and the windows fill with the fog that means they are at a platform.

The doors open. As usual, those who leave first notice nothing, walking silently, rucksacks on their backs, towards the barriers. Agent 8, Ai Haibara, Ea-nasir, Hajime Aikawa, Ienzo, Jade, Jon Snow, Merwen , Ryu, Son Goku, Takato Matsuda, Phil Connors, Wen Sizhui; all pass across the platform, not looking back. And then they're gone, disappeared through the barriers and into the fog beyond.

But on the platform itself there are four new faces. Wearing hoodies, two in purple, two in red, in various states of confusion.

For New Passengers

At first all they can see is steam billowing around them as they come to their senses. As their eyes adjust, they find themselves on a platform. The platform is long but narrow, a brick wall running across one side. It is not quite enough to shelter them from the torrential rain that falls around them.

They are standing, in clothes that are not their own and a style they might not even recognise. They are carrying a rucksack on their back. For a moment it seems to just be them, alone on the foggy, rainy platform; then the fog begins to fade and they realise they aren’t alone.

The platform isn't large, but it is enough to hold the four figures scattered around, all facing the tracks, all dressed in cargo trousers, hoodies and waterproofs. Then there is a roaring sound and out of the fog arrives a train. Jet black with gold writing on the side. The Voidtrecker Express. There is a hiss as the doors slide open and out pours a strange assortment of people, over a hundred at least. Some are human, some are less so. Most are wearing the same hoodie in one of the four colours, red, orange, blue and purple, though some are sporting different clothes in a variety of styles.

Behind them, the doors close, and the train is cloaked in the same fog that hides the world beyond the platform.

The Train

After a short time, perhaps ten minutes or so, the fog clears and the doors hiss open again. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there's anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would lead to something terrible. If that is not enough, there are plenty of people on the platform now, to encourage them onto the train or just the fact it is pouring down- the train might be alien but it is dry at least.

Each ICP shows the same message and next to the screens there are stacks of leaflets written by those on the train, with further information (see
'Publications'). The store rooms have been restocked with fresh ingredients, it seems the food of the month is octopus.

For passengers that have bought items, these are also scattered around the luggage carriage in various suitcases and bags. For those from red team who go and investigate they will find a box of miniature pumpkin cakes. There is enough for one each including the new team members.

New passengers will find their ticket allows them into their cabins. In most rooms, the occupied beds are obvious, leaving the spotless, empty spaces for the newcomers. Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches full of spare blankets and pillows.

They won't be the only ones looking for their room, it seems that Sleeper Carriage Four has disappeared and those who were living there have been reassigned, their new room is on their ticket and they will find all their belongings safely stowed in their rucksacks in their new room.

Departure

A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers braving the tain, and the doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, but they may wish to brief their new companions.

The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view again as it picks up speed.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express." A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog-filled sky.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated. Entry into Voidspace in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."

A shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding. As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady itself. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever-changing colours.

Welcome to the Void!

Platform

Hera watches Takato and Merwen leave with a hint of sadness. SHe was fond of the kid, and she'd connected to Merwen on a level that she couldn't always with the other passengers. But there's nothing to be done, they all know that.

Hopefully they're back home to their families. Now she has new purples to learn about.

Chores

As soon as she saw the assignments she knew she'd be facing an uphill battle with her team. It still was by no means actually her job to get them to do chores. But the fact remains that the chores don't do themselves.

She's never met anyone who actually likes 'fresher duty, but there's no way around it. "It'll be more unpleasant for everyone if it doesn't get done."

Cleaning the kitchen is realistically a bigger task but probably a little more pleasant to talk anyone into.

Games Room

She hasn't added any new modules to the flight simulator this stop, but her offer of lessons still stands for anyone who wants to take advantage of it. And if they don't, well, she needs practice herself as well.

Whether the need is to actually keep her skills sharp or just to feel a bit more like herself, well, that's another question.

Jake sees a familiar face and approaches with his usual smile.

"Hera, hey! Whatcha working on this time?"

She grins. She's just come off a good run and that always put her in a good mood, even if it's just a simulation. "Getting some B-Wing practice in."

You never know when you might need to run a blockade. "Have you had a chance to try any of this out?"

Raptor was sitting in the simulator staring at it, "Why...."

She had apparently loaded the YT-1300 module out of curiosity and was dumbfounded, "Why is there a simulator for a cargo ship that seems to have inputs for half its systems being in poor repair?"

"I could see a train, but.... A flying bus with no left turn signal that constantly lists to the right?"

"Someone else requested that one for sentimental reasons." SHe had ordered the stock version of the controls. Anything that happened after that was out of her hands since she had yet to actually encounter the specific vessel.

"I've convinced a hoverbus to do useful things on occasion." She can't help smiling at the memory. The bus was a disaster and had never been anything exciting, but the whole thing had involved Kanan. "The YT-1300 though... I can think of some interesting ways to use the narrow profile from one angle, but as freighters go the VX-100 is vastly superior."

"I freely admit, I was designed for fighters and capitol ships. I understand the need of logistic support, but this one... Just seems..."

She shakes her head. She can't quite find a word that works for garbage without saying it, and she would never call another machine that, unless it was completely junked past repair.

"It just seems like it needed another two or three tries in R&D. Were resources scarce in your universe? Or was this just some way of your evil empire keeping people below them in resources?"

"I think a lot of the appeal is supposed to be the modular design." She doesn't really think it's worht it, but there has to be a reason the ship was designed that way. "A YT-1300 can become a lot of things."

She shrugs. "I mostly fly fighters when I'm not flying the Ghost." Which as far as she can tell is a vastly superior ship. Even a stock VCX would be.

Raptor ponders for a moment then tilts her head, "So smugglers liked it is what you are saying? I guess that makes sense."

She shrugs, "I flew the Orion gou, and the Orion Battler mostly. The first was a large fighter carrier, the second was.... Well it was a destroyer sized ship with a big gun that also carried our 12 fighters, and turned into a giant robot."

"And I had my voyager, which... Was the only actual air/space superiority fighter in the group."

"What was the Ghost? A cloaking ship? One with an intangibility field?"

[personal profile] averyusefultray 2021-11-10 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
"No one would ever admit it, but smugglers were probably the target market." She can't judge given the amount of smuggling she's done in among the treason.

"The Ghost is a VCX-100 freighter extensively modified for stealth. I can put it right under the nose of a lot of Imperial outposts." COuld another pilot? Well, she's the one flying anyway. "There are rumours about true cloaking devices, but no one's been able to get around the double blind problem."

Have a Jedi fly it isn't an actual strategy these days. Even Palpatine didn't have enough Force users to spare.

"I'm starting to think giant robots are a more common combat strategy than I thought in other universes." This is the third person who's mentioned flying one.
washibot: (Oh MY!)

[personal profile] washibot 2021-11-10 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Smuggling is part of any healthy rebellion movement."

With that she shrugs, "The double blind problem? You mean the refraction of light so that you can't see outside of it, the fact that you generally find another ship by its fuel wake or its heat signature, or the fact that pushing a ship to phase out of real space and warp at the same time to make it intangible is rather delicate?"

"I know we had a kyutama for that, but it chewed through power really fast. As for giant robots, I thought they were common everywhere. At least in all the universes I've seen. I mean planet killing weapons were the rarity on the Orion Battler from what I've seen."

"When the people you're rebelling against are partial to blockades, it has to be. The B-Wing is meant for that, by the way." She does love busting a blockade.

"The major obstacle has been that every option that manages to completely neutralize enemy sensors also completely neutralizes your own." The others are tricky but there's been work on it.

"Droids in my universe don't tend to be any larger than your average sentient organic, but I've met a few people who pilot them here."

She shudders at that last thought. "I hope those are a rarity anywhere." If Saw is right... the Empire would certainly enjoy such a thing.
washibot: (why is this a thing?)

[personal profile] washibot 2021-11-11 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sadly, the Empire we were up against destroyed many planets. They were actually working on a bomb that would destroy the galaxy."

She shakes her head and lets out a sigh, "When power hungry monsters think they can become gods it gets.... Messy."

"As for cloaking systems, do you have any schematics of what you were trying? I'd be happy to go over them and see how close they are to ours. It'd be... Something to do."
averyusefultray: (Uuuugh)

[personal profile] averyusefultray 2021-11-13 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hera mutters several curses at the very thought. "The Empire's done some terrible things in my galaxy but something of that scale... and going after the galaxy just seems... why would they ever want to do that?"

What would even be left to rule.

"I don't have schematics for the experimental ones. But I can show you some of what I did manage on the Ghost."
washibot: (Oh MY!)

[personal profile] washibot 2021-11-18 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Don Aramage thought if he recreated the big bang he could make the galaxy in his image and be a god."

She sighs and shakes her head, then claps her hands together, "BUT! We dealt with that! So I hope it is never a thing again!"

"Still, showing me what you did manage could help. I've been involved in a kyutama based cloaking system, but seeing what other galaxies have done could be useful!"

"I can't believe Palpatine seems tame." That just hasn't happened. But he's never tried to recreate the galaxy itself afer destroying it. Just destroyed what got in his way. "He should never seem tame."

She keys in the sequence to switch the controls over. "Still a freight, but I've done a lot of work."
