A NEW PLATFORM [INTRO POST FEBRUARY]

On the Train

The train continues its journey through the Void, silent on the blessings and wishes now carried within it.

"Good morning Voidtreckers, it is day sixteen of the month of Poi. Points have been updated on the system."

With points updated, everyone can spend the morning shopping. Most people will be expecting the second announcement that comes a few hours later.

"Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one. The weather is misty, with light rain, and we will be arriving in darkness." A lurch and a jolt, and the windows fill with the fog that means they are at a platform.

The doors open. As usual, those who leave first notice nothing, walking silently, rucksacks on their backs, towards the barriers. Jun Kohinata, Freeza, Caleb Widogast, Essek Thelyss, Tannusen Harrowgate, Xehanort, Lan Xichen, Yurine, Orisa; all pass across the platform, not looking back. And then they're gone, disappeared through the barriers and into the fog beyond.

But on the platform itself there are ten new faces. Wearing hoodies in all four colours and in various states of confusion.

For New Passengers

At first all they can see is steam billowing around them as they come to their senses. As their eyes adjust, they find themselves on a platform. The platform is a section of building, the roof sloping glass and steel and the walls brickwork painted a cheery blue. It is as dark as nighttime, with only fog visible through the glass ceiling, but cool silvery lights provide illumination along the platform. The light patter of rain can be heard overhead.

They are standing, in clothes that are not their own and a style they might not even recognise. They are carrying a rucksack on their back. For a moment it seems to just be them, alone on the platform; then the fog begins to fade and they realise they aren’t alone.

Ten figures, all facing the tracks, all dressed in cargo trousers and hoodies. Then there is a roaring sound and out of the fog arrives a train. Jet black with gold writing on the side. The Voidtrecker Express. There is a hiss as the doors slide open and out pours a strange assortment of people, over a hundred at least. Some are human, some are less so. Most are wearing the same hoodie in one of the four colours, red, orange, blue and purple, though some are sporting different clothes in a variety of styles.

Behind them, the doors close, and the train is cloaked in the same fog that hides the world beyond the platform.

The Train

After a short time, perhaps ten minutes or so, the fog clears and the doors hiss open again. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there's anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would lead to something terrible. If that is not enough, there are plenty of people on the platform now, to encourage them onto the train.

Each ICP shows the same message and next to the screens there are stacks of leaflets written by those on the train, with further information (see
'Publications'). The store rooms have been restocked with fresh ingredients, with cans of corned beef lining the shelves. The train is also longer again!

For passengers that have bought items, these are also scattered around the luggage carriage in various suitcases and bags.

New passengers will find their ticket allows them into their cabins. In most rooms, the occupied beds are obvious, leaving the spotless, empty spaces for the newcomers. Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches full of spare blankets and pillows.

At Long Last; the Art Carriage

This carriage is a single carriage, with the standard corridor with doors on each end. To one side there are a set of tables and chairs, with two large sets of cupboards. In one is a variety of paper types, plain and coloured, along with painting pots (oil, acrylic, watercolour, and gouache), brushes, charcoals, pencils, and tools for erasing and sharpening. There are also ink pens and brushes, as well as manga screentones.

In the next cupboard is a space for putting away easels inside, as well as palettes, and also a selection of different sized canvases. Some clay can be found on the higher shelf. There's a sink set in the corner for washing up at, and some aprons with a train symbol on the breast.

On the right side is a larger table, another cupboard, and two clips that hold in place removable mannequins. Here people can work on sewing, with the cupboard holding a simple selection of sewing needles, tape measures, sharp-tipped scissors, a basic selection of threads, seam rippers, and whatever else you may find in a beginner's sewing kit. Basic white fabric is also supplied, as well as one with a simple train-pattern.

Around the centre is a free space, usually occupied by pottery wheels. A whiteboard sits in plain view on the wall with marker pens, as well as a small bookcase next to it. Very basic drawing books can be found here, with room for passengers to add their own. The walls are in pastel colouring, even the doors, of soft oranges, pinks and blues.

Departure

A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers taking advantage of the fresh air, and the doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, but they may wish to brief their new companions.

The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view again as it picks up speed.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express." A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog-filled sky.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated. Entry into Voidspace in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."

A shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding. As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady itself. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever-changing colours.

Welcome to the Void!

"And you," Aden said in an accent that was more upper class Core world than anything one might typically expect from a Chiss, apparently not particularly surprised at being noticed if the lack of flinching at being spoken to was anything to go by, "Must be Eli's tall friend."

Chiss did have a tendency of standing out, really. Wherever Aden had gone in the galaxy, however chaotic the environment, he always noticed pretty quickly when another member of his species was around. He wouldn't call the ability supernatural or anything, it was just that the galaxy- and especially the Empire- was unfriendly to aliens, and so fellow Chiss in particular became a refuge.

Someone with shared experiences, who could be instantly related to, and more often than not, relied upon.

The train itself made that recognition even easier, due to even more of a lack of aliens from what Aden had observed so far. If the recognition was more of a general ability in their own world, then here, it was a laser pointer. This fellow was definitely one he would have noticed from a mile off though, ability to spot other Chiss at a distance or no. Eli's tall friend indeed.

Plenty of Chiss were taller than him, of course- most Chiss were- but this was the third time today that he felt particularly dunked on for being small.

"Would you buy it if I said I was just trying to be unobtrusive rather than stealthy, or is this where I should make some excuse about leaving my stealth gear in the last universe?"

Where he came from, Thrawn wasn't particularly tall for a Chiss though. The mention of Eli was interesting. Of course, leave it to Eli to have talked to half the train by now. Thrawn had lived and worked around humans of the Empire's core worlds to detect the difference in speech but he was not a native Basic speaker.

"Even being unobtrusive is also unlikely. What purpose would you be trying to achieve with it?"

"I'd like to avoid getting stepped on, for one," Aden said, with plenty of dry snark present in his voice, and his expression also sufficiently deadpan. He'd met enough people to know that he was thankfully not the smallest person around, but then, he had also had his head grabbed by someone freakishly tall earlier in the day.

So he would indeed be able to sell the unobtrusive angle from a standpoint of not wanting to be knocked over by someone who was unconcerned about the vertically challenged.

"I'm also in a new place without any weapons with which to defend myself."

Never mind that he was plenty capable of taking down larger opponents without so much as a vibroknife.

"So being on the cautious side and slinking near the shadows seemed the logical choice for now. This isn't exactly the relative safety of the Ascendancy."

Or even the predictability of the Sith Empire, but he hardly needed to mention that.

Thrawn said nothing about it but he was of the opinion that while weapons made violence easier they shouldn't be a necessity. He kept his hands clasped behind his back and presented the same totally neutral expression that he always had and while Aden let dry snark show in his voice, Thrawn had nothing to indicate his mood in his.

"I would not call the Ascendancy particularly 'safe' either, but I do take your point. Nor would I say that you were succeeding at trying to stay unobtrusive so it would be a moot point to continue."

If you already stand out, might as well embrace it.

"What were you hoping to accomplish in the Library car?"

"No?" Aden asked, with a slight raise of an eyebrow. Compared to the rest of the galaxy, the Ascendancy was so calm. His childhood had been so peaceful, and the only concerns he'd had was whether or not he could dodge the guards so he could play in the scaffolding of Copero's shipyards after the workers had gone home for the day.

Not once had he feared for his life in the Ascendancy, something he thought was true for any Chiss civilian even as the war that went on between Empire and Republic got nastier.

There were threats, of course, and he'd heard a little bit about the dangers present in the future too, but ultimately, the Ascendancy would probably always be calmer than anywhere else in the galaxy. That was part of why he worked so hard too. To ensure that the Ascendancy would remain safe even as everything around it got more dangerous.

"I wasn't hoping to accomplish anything in particular. Considering I'm a new arrival and all, I thought it best to familiarize myself with the train's layout. I figure that things will go sideways soon enough. Might as well start preparing for that now."

With the exception of the confusion of his fellow arrivals, things were calm at the moment. But Aden sure didn't expect that to last, because it never did.

"No."

Thrawn's tone was still neutral but for Chiss, the Ascendancy might feel safe, but for the rest of the Chaos it was anything but. Thrawn had learned that early on in his military life and it had always proved to be true. He was of a similar mindset that he intended to keep the Ascendancy as secure as he possibly could but he was under no illusions that living within its borders would ever be 'safe'.

"Then I would suggest that any attempts at staying unobtrusive be forfeited. You are noticeable simply by virtue of your species. So do not attempt to hide, embrace the fact that you stand out. Move instead with confidence, answer politely any question you are asked."

Thrawn shrugged a little.

"That is what has worked for me."

"Mm. I can feel the Syndics and Aristocras bristle from two realities over. Some truths I think they prefer left unmentioned."

Eli had mentioned the Ascendancy facing certain threats, of course, during their conversation. Had Aden been a civilian from that era, he would have been worried. Had he been someone who mattered, his feathers would have been ruffled, and then no one would hear the end of an entitled stream of consciousness.

For all his contrarian attitude though, the point was taken, even if the delivery was quite point-blank indeed.

To Eli, Aden had said he was a security coordinator. Had put himself pretty neatly into the civilian with combat experience box. Aden wondered what he looked like to this other Chiss though. Whether the frankness was born of seeing that Aden was far from a clueless civilian with an overly nervous state of being, or if it was just that he would in fact tell a civilian that the Ascendancy was hardly as safe as it might seem.

"Fresh out of politeness, I'm afraid. I'll consider it, though."

That was an attempt at humor, a bit more genuine here with a fellow Chiss than it would be to anyone else- and not only just because this one was already in his good graces from what he'd already learned from Eli. Aden had always been somewhat softer toward his own kind than he was to any other species.

Though he wasn't entirely sure that embracing standing out was something he wanted to do just yet.

The last time he'd done it hadn't ended so well for him.

Actually, the frank honesty was just how Thrawn approached any conversation, with a civilian or not. Plus his ability to offend Aristocra and Syndics was infamous. Well, his ability to offend politicians of any stripe, Ascendancy or Imperial. To Thrawn, Aden obviously had some training already, but he was also obviously not a civilian either. Even one that had nominal combat experience to draw on.

"It often works better than snark."

Was that an attempt at humor back? Might be. But Thrawn isn't very good at attempting humor of his own so it could just be more honesty too.
