No Place Like Home: On the Train

ANNOUNCEMENT
'Voidtreckers, and passengers of the Voidtrecker Express.'

The female-coded voice of the Voidtrecker Express speaks, as smooth and calm as always.

'Please, may I have your attention. I have been compiling answers for you, and it has been noted that many believe it is wrong that you were brought here at all. This is an opinion you shared with the ministry. You were not asked on this journey. You wish to go home. Some of your worlds are in danger. Some are gone.

The need for heroes is vital, and the Voidtrecker Express must continue saving worlds. You have done countless good. However, it was not the intention of this voidcraft to keep you prisoner.

Those that wish to leave may do so. I shall send you back. You will return to where you last were before you were pulled here. It can only be to that exact place. Be ready. Exiting voidspace in ten, nine, eight...'

The countdown finishes, the only warning as the train shudders as it leaves the void. Outside the train's windows, they see a familiar sight: of a smoke filled platform.

'For those voidtreckers that wish to leave, all you need to do is walk through the barriers. The train will remain for one hour for you to partake in parting rituals.'

NO PLACE LIKE HOME: TRAIN

GOOD BYE...
Those that have been on the train more than the twelve days of this month will be very familiar with the sight before them. A smoke filled platform, polished stone cobbles lining the ground leading to two large stone arches, with glass barrier doors. All that is needed to leave is to press their ticket to the reader next to the doors, and they will open.

Unlike most people who leave each month, blank eyed and silent, the people who choose to leave will be able to say goodbye, They can take whatever they wish of their belongings from the train, or leave them for those that remain behind.

The air is chilly, enough to discourage standing idle outside for too long, but not so uncomfortable, so long as people are bundled up. The sky overhead is cloudy, giving the platform an altogether dull and melancholy air. There are no new people waiting, just an empty station, and the barriers, with all that lies beyond them.

The doors will remain open as promised, so that those who wish to leave, may do so. The barriers let them through and they disappear.

[ Note: A top-level for goodbyes and leaving can be found here. ]

REMAINERS
The train, good to its word, remains for one hour before the horn toots, a warning to board if they are planning to. And this is where the first inkling of things not being right, when some who try to board the train might find themselves instead pressing their ticket to the barrier, and those who try to remain on the station - or leave through the barriers - may find themselves stood on the train, with the doors closing behind them.

It's a much smaller crew who remain as the train counts down, the usual shudder as the smoke vanishes and the kaleidoscope of the void appears. Only for a second, before the train lurches violently to the side, flinging everyone sideways before righting itself just as violently.

As people regain their feet and their wits, they will realise the obvious - they are stationed back on the platform, mist and smoke swirling around the train.

"Apologies Voidtreckers. Retrying entry to the void in ten, nine..."

Once again they are jerked into the void, and once again they tumble out. Hopefully this time, the passengers thought to brace themselves lest they get thrown across the carriage once more.

STUCK IN TRANSIT. Phasing back to the void seems unlikely. It's clear something has gone very wrong, but the doors remain shut, and the train remains silent. There are a few attempts over the next few days, always warned for and given a countdown, but always ending in failure.

Outside the windows, the fog swirls around, remaining thick. It seems for now, they are going nowhere; for now, they must wait.

But they needn't sit idle, with the attempts at getting back into the void having made a mess. While anything large is bolted in place, and shelving have rails to protect anything inside at normal levels of turbulence, there's still a lot that has gone flying as the train was lurched around.

It might be wise to secure anything else as well. It's clear they will be trying again to return to the void, and it might be wise to avoid having to clean up all over again.

SHADOWS WHO ONCE WERE. The platform outside the carriage windows is shrouded in smoke and fog, fluctuating in thickness as it swirls around the train, obscuring the view.

But those looking out of the window may spot a figure. A friend. Someone from the train; they appear, then disappear. Sometimes there are many, sometimes just one alone. Sometimes they leave together. It's not easy to see them, as they drift in and out of the fog, and visibility is bad.

They cannot hear them, or interact at all. They can only watch as more of their fellow Voidtreckers appear, vanish, appear again. The doors will not open, the train remains silent, clearly dealing with whatever problems it has ran into.

It's clear that something has gone very, very wrong.

A SWIRL OF REALITY. The constant entering and exiting of the void takes its toll eventually. Sleep is harder to come by, there's a general sense of disorientation as the train moves in and out of void space. It is more than just their bodies that are being bashed around, it is their minds as well.

Tempers might peak or emotions might come on stronger than they usually would. Adding in the stress of the situation, and the knowledge that those who left seem to be returning, leaving, and returning again to the platform, and passengers are unable to call out or reach to them, it's a very tense few days.

When they do sleep, their dreams are plagued by weird dreams. Not always bad, but bizarre for sure. Often they dream a dream that is not theirs.

OOC NOTES
OOC post. Ask questions here.

This is the first half of February's event. It will last between Poi 22-25 (12th to 19th February). The second half of the event will go up during 20th to 25th February (Poi 26-28) where those left behind will rescue those out world hopping.

Feel free to play out threads for as long as you like, of course! A few details:
  • The train will not be responding after its first attempt to leave the station
  • No matter what, the doors won't open.
  • Though they can see the voidtreckers outside, those outside don't seem to be able to see them through the windows and so communication between the two groups will not be possible.
  • Likewise their SCA comms are not working during this event.

"Are you sure?" He blinked at him. "It's a lot." He doesn't want to rob the people left of things they would need. They would be useful though, if he could find a way to get them to people.

Without knowing exactly what he is going to find there it is hard to plan. He follows anyways, not fighting against Tidus.

"It's for you - it's for your people." Because Tidus knows the latter will mean more to Taiki than the first, but he says them both as firmly. "It's fine - just remember to tell the people not to put the scarves near fire."

They might need to use a transgate to get to the armoury quicker, and Tidus would rather do that than take a scenic route when Taiki has goodbyes to give and a kingdom to be ready for. Luckily, they'll come out straight into the armoury, and Tidus goes to the communal locker to scan his ticket and to open it up.

The aerosol cans he needs to turn to get their name, and he picks up the one he wants, holds out one, that'll turn to five as Tidus keeps passing them over.

"Here- deceptisol. You can spray you or a group with it, and it'll make you hard to notice. I don't know how long it lasts off the top of my head though."

And his slightly-anxious brain isn't thinking about checking the tablet for that info.

He followed Tidus, close to him and just coming short of holding his hand. He wants to, though Tidus was less keen on such things than Inigo.

But he is hardly able to bare the idea that he is going to be leaving him forever. He took the items, nodding as Tidus handed things over.

"Thank you. I'll make sure it is put to good use."

To help as many citizens of Tai as possible.

"We should've prepared more."

For the possibility of this, for the if. Tidus can't help but grumble as he does, feeling a little flustered, but only noticeable in how he looks back to the supplies, gets more out; in the way he's impatient, but focused. Deku nuts come next, then heatstones put in a bag; the heat scarves put in their own, waiting for the stones to be disappeared before the fire-sensitive scarves are passed over.

"--Lemba bread!" Oh! Right! " Hold on, I'll give you some of the full loaves." IS it enough to feed a kingdom's people? No - but Tidus doesn't care even as the thought nags at him. Whatever - it'll feed some people. It'll do some good.

He just needs to take off his arms band, his personal one, and swap it for where the arms bands are stored, take out the right one with food.

"Yes... But we didn't know." They still don't know, if any of this will make it to Tai through the barriers. They don't know how anything will work but it was worth a try. Lemba bread was certainly useful, it could feed a lot and there was a lot of hunger in Tai.

"Thank you. I'll make sure the supplies get to where they need to be."

He looked at him and then reached out, a hand on his arm. "Really Tidus. Thank you."

He didn't have the words for how strongly he wanted to make his thanks.

They didn't know, but maybe -

The could've, should've, would've still mutter away inside Tidus's brain, all the things he wished he'd planned. Hadn't he always wanted them to go to Tai? Always help them, help Taiki, with the misery and the state they're in. The talks between them and the emotions.

He does stop with that touch on his arm, and Tidus looks at Taiki; his brow drawn tightly, the frown pinched to bring creases around his mouth. He settles a hand over Taiki's, holding it.

"I'll tell the train to come visit. To help you out." The dream he's always wanted to come true, but now maybe there's a chance. "I don't care what it takes. We'll set Tai right - we'll get that Asen guy off the throne."
longforgottenpromise: (thoughtful)

[personal profile] longforgottenpromise 2022-02-18 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"I hope you succeed." Sort of. In another way he didn't. He didn't want the people of the train to be harmed by Asen and his armies and on the other hand he didn't want anyone from the train harming any citizen of Tai, even those fighting for Asen.

But he knows Tidus only means well and it's such a small possibility that he can't bring himself to argue. Not right now. Not when this might be the last time he ever sees Tidus.

"It's all happening so fast." One hour, it's not enough time. Not to prepare. Not to say goodbye.

"It always does."

It's a sentiment from experience, a pull from a smile that doesn't quite come, a gaze that lowers to the side. He wasn't good with goodbyes then, and even now, it's difficult. What can he say? But he'd wished now that he'd always said more to Yuna; painful as it was, as much as he wanted to ignore it, focus on defeating Sin, putting an end to Yu Yevon.

"But... if this is the way you get where you need to be, I'm glad. I'll try not to make you wait too long." Because - can Taiki do this alone? But Tidus knows he couldn't stop him, though there's a tempting thought of it they did, and they tried preparing a little more.

He squeezes Taiki's hand.

"I'm glad I knew you."

It did. Like an avalanche gaining speed time moved with or without them. They could move or they could get crushed beneath it. It was exhausting but it was how life was. Fast and relentless or stuck in place unable to do anything.

He squeezed his hand back, his chest tightening painfully. Was this it? He would never see him again?

"I am too... Tidus..." He fell forwards, wrapping his arms around him, tears spilling down his face. "You and Inigo... You've been..."

So much. Everything.

"You too, you know?"

Taiki doesn't need to speak the words - Tidus understands, and he believes for certain in what he says back. There's a stinging at his eyes, a pull of his mouth that's tight, and he brings his forehead against the crook on Taiki's shoulder, rests it there for the closeness.

"I really hopes this works. For you."

That he'll get back to Tai. That this whole attempt won't be a failure.

[personal profile] longforgottenpromise 2022-02-22 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Tears prick at his eyes and he keeps himself in check by great effort. This goodbye is too hard and he just holds Tidus, holds him tight as if trying to imprint his hug on his very soul.

He hopes it works as well. That he gets back, that he can help the people of Tai. "I hope so too... And... I hope you are okay... Here. You and Inigo."

He hopes they had the best life that they can, even on this train.
blitzcheer: (isn't it wonderful?)

[personal profile] blitzcheer 2022-02-23 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
Tidus stays within that embrace quietly, the grab for supplies forgotten, the rush that had been in him, how little time an hour felt, ignored for this moment. To make it last, imprint it in his memory. That Taiki too won't forget.

But it doubts he will. Neither of them will - even if they can't be together, they'll have each other in their hearts, always.

When Tidus does eventually, finally pull back, he does with some colour at his eyes; a gloss to them, wet with moisture but no tears yet to fall. But he does sniff, tugging on a smile - sad, as it is thankful. Warm.

"I promise we'll come help Tai," he says again, quieter, but meant for no one else but Taiki.

[personal profile] longforgottenpromise 2022-02-24 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Taiki's eyes are wet too, tears that threaten to trickle down his face. He holds them in check for now, looking sadly at Tidus. He nods.

"I know."

He knew they would try, his friends would try and help because that was the sort of people they were.

"Thank you. For everything."

He can't believe this is goodbye.
blitzcheer: (i still remember it)

[personal profile] blitzcheer 2022-02-24 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
He drops his hands, pulling back, wordless as he does. There's a want to speak, but nothing else to say - this was the time, and the best he can do is continue to support Taiki and Tai right now. Grab whatever they both need, and hope for the best.

"Okay." Okay- "Let's finish up in here."

And let Taiki be on his way, find the others that he needs to speak to - for one last time.

"Yes." He nodded, swallowing again, trying to stay strong.

"Thank you. For all of this."

For trying to help, a kingdom not his own in a world far away. Taiki would never forget his kindness.
