A New Platform [Intro Post November]

"Good morning passengers, it is day one of the month of Catfish." As passengers wake up in their beds as usual those who were still feeling the ill effects of the inspection will find themselves back to normal. No fear, no strange sights, no eerie singing unless they linger in the gaps between carriages. "Team Points have been updated on the system."

Those that have been here since the turn of the month into Bassoon will probably guess that today will be a platform day and so it is. A few hours into the morning there is a second announcement. "Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void imminent." Hopefully everyone knows to hold on, though if they do not they will be in for a bumpy arrival to the platform. At first all they can see from the windows is fog.

Stepping out onto the platform they will realise it is warm, as if they are inside. Indeed around the space there are candles, hanging from wire though the ceiling is either too high or too obscured by fog to see. Passengers will see both Ash and Uldren leaving the train, both have their rucksacks on their back and they walk towards the barriers through the fog, show their tickets and disappear.

On the platform there are five figures, dressed in Voidtrecker colours. Waiting for the train.

For new arrivals.

At first all they can see if steam. Billowing around them as they come to their senses. They are standing, in clothes that are not their own, styles they might not even recognise. They are carrying a rucksack on their back. For a moment it seems to just be them, alone in the white haze but then the steam begins to fade and they realise they aren’t alone.

The platform is not very large, but it holds five figures all facing the tracks, all wearing similar clothing. The tracks stretch left and right into steam, or perhaps fog. Nothing can be seen to either side. There is a wall around the platform and the only entrance is a ticket barrier. It cannot be open, nor do there seem to be any staff.

What there is, is a train. Jet black and gleaming where it stands on the rails. Voidtrecker Express is emblazoned in the engine in gold. There is a hiss as the doors slide open.

Out step a selection of people, some less human than others, wearing clothes just like those worn by those on the platform.

The Train

The doors hiss open. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there is anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would not be a good thing.

It seems the train has once again gained a carriage. A rock garden set in a domed transparent carriage. The sound of fountains and streams make this a peaceful place, and the stone benches that sit around seem to invite quiet reflection and calm.

Each ICP shows the same message. If Red team go to claim their prize they will find there is a toffee apple each. A box labelled passenger supplies can also be found and it contains toiletries that those passengers on the train longest may have ran out of. It also holds a number of new leather bound journals, in case anyone has managed to fill theirs already.

The food stores have been topped up with new fresh food. Sweet peppers have taken over as the ingredient of the month, probably to the relief of the fishphobes on the train!

New passengers will find their tickets allow them into their cabins. They may need to negotiate for beds, especially if they want a top bunk!

Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches and you will hopefully find a pillow for your bed if it has not been nabbed by a roommate, there are also spare blankets for if it gets cold.

Departure

A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers and the doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, they may wish to brief their new companions.

The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view as it picks up speed.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express.” A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog filled sky.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated."

Hopefully someone warns you that you really want to heed that warning because a moment later there is a shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding.

As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever changing colours.

Welcome to voidspace.

Oh sithspit. Younglings. Just what she needed.

Telli didn't have that much experience with younglings and had never felt all that comfortable around them, much to Mercy's amusement, but she wasn't going to let an obvious weakness show.

"Yes, I'm new. Have you been here long?"

"A while," he says. "I think its been about six weeks."

It had felt much, much longer.

Telli glanced down at the leaflet she'd been handed by someone and skimmed over it.

"Well, whoever wrote this did an excellent job of foreseeing most of my questions. But, I suppose all who find themselves here have similar concerns."

She looked towards her companion and continued, "Would you be willing to tell me more about what you've experienced?"

"If you want," he says. "I don't know how much help that will be. I don't think anyone knows very much."

"Maybe not, but you have experienced life here and can tell me about it. This thing," she waves the leaflet slightly, "says we make stops for missions? What are those like?"

"I've only been there for one," Conan says. "I was on a team that had to help people from a city evacuate."

"Orcs were attacking them."

Conan's understanding of the line between implausible and impossible had shifted significantly in his time here.
