A New Platform [Intro Post January]

On the Train

After a very quiet latter half of the month of Catfish the calendar clicks over. Passengers wake up in their beds as usual to the passenger announcement. "Good morning passengers, it is day one of the month of domino.".

Those that have been on board a while know that new months usually come with new people and so the message a few hours later will not be a surprise. "Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void imminent." A lurch and a jolt and they are soon surrounded by the fog that means they are at a platform.

It will come as a relief that no one leaves this time, no one with packed bags to walk silently towards the barriers.

Added to that the platform itself holds more people then it ever has before. Twenty one figures, all the colours are represented. The ground is icy and their breath pools in white clouds around them.

For New Passengers

At first all they can see if steam. Billowing around them as they come to their senses. They are standing, in clothes that are not their own, styles they might not even recognise. They are carrying a rucksack on their back. For a moment it seems to just be them, alone in the white haze but then the steam begins to fade and they realise they aren’t alone.

The platform is not large and it holds twenty one figures all facing the tracks, all dressed in cargo trousers and hoodies. The air is cold, the ground icy beneath your feet. Both left and right the tracks disappear into the mist. Then there is a roaring sound and out of the fog arrives a train. Jet black with gold writing on the side. The Voidtrecker Express. There is a hiss as the doors slide open and out into the cold step a selection of people. Some are human, some are less so. They are wearing the same hoodie in one of the four colours, red, orange, blue and purple.

The Train

The doors hiss open. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there is anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would not be a good thing also it’s very cold out on the platform. The train is warmer.

Each ICP shows the same message and next to the screens there are stacks of leaflets written by those on the train, with further information. The store rooms have been restocked and it seems that water chestnuts are the month of Domino’s ingredient of choice! Any of orange team who who go to check the luggage cart will find a parcel containing gingerbread snowflakes, decorated with icing. One for each of the orange team, including new members, come share in the reward!

New passengers will find their tickets allow them into their cabins. They may need to negotiate for beds, especially if they want a top bunk!

Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches and you will hopefully find a pillow for your bed if it has not been nabbed by a roommate, there are also spare blankets for if it gets cold.

Departure

A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers and the doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, they may wish to brief their new companions.

The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view as it picks up speed.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express.” A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog filled sky.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated."

Hopefully someone warns you that you really want to heed that warning because a moment later there is a shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding.

As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever changing colours.

Welcome to voidspace!

Here is another teenager dressed in purple, sprawled across the window seat where he'd been taking in the view.

"Hey, you okay?" He makes a face. "They really need to figure out a better warning for that."

A smile does escape as Thea accepted the rose, it had been rare while on the island. 'And you have it worse in fashion don't" meaning the orange but her tone hopefully shows a joke. "I'm Thea."

[Train for Princess]

The little rabbit peaked Thea's interest, this was something un-island.

So she offers Princess her hand to sniff.

"Nothing secured. There's a luggage car at the end of the train, but I know a lot of people like to go there for the quiet."

"That's one way to describe it." Planes, dimensions, shards, any number of terms -- who knew which was correct, or if the distinction was minimal? "We've been to several different worlds."

"The name's Edge, and I am charmed beyond words." He put his hand to his heart and bowed, all courtly and graceful.

Telli had no idea what or where Canto Bight was, but she'd never let her lack of knowledge stop her. Plus, the youngling gave just enough information for her to guess 'Courtesan' and she knew how to handle that.

She raised a brow as she stared down at the youngling and considered briefly how to answer.

"'Protoge'? Then I believe I outrank you." Telli's voice took on a haughty tone, "I'm the Chief Bodyguard of His Imperial Highness, formerly Second in Command of the Crimson Dawn, formerly the Favored of Gardula the Hutt."

"Whoa! Hey!"

The Sacred Tome was surprisingly heavy, but not beyond lifting. That was always true, no matter who was lifting it.

"Why are you doing this when you read the pamphlet?! WHY DID I EVEN MAKE THOSE PAMPHLETS?!"

Telli considered simply holding the man in front in place with the Force but decided against it. Instead she tapped the cabin door with a finger, seizing it with the Force at the same time so it couldn't move, and spoke.

"Attempt to move the door."

"Oh. Yeah, yeah. I can see that...I mean, I never really knew my mom and so...I get that." Awkward, but entirely true. Man, Renee didn't even know at all what she'd even say if her mom showed. Like she'd even know her mom. All she'd seen were pictures...

"Little bit longer, then, but you really probably ought to go in soon. You aren't looking any better, ya know what I mean?"

She can't make Pete do what she wouldn't do herself. If she thought any of her family--the ones she called family, anyway--showed up.

God help them all if her dad showed, though.

Honestly, Renee would welcome the help. Spice up life, live a little, right? Nevermind they were on a closed area like the train...

Eh, still, she'd probably stick up for Bucky. Especially if it was something she had planned. She's got no idea about how far the bad blood between Bucky and Tony might go, but Renee definitely takes the heat for her own mischief.

"Eh, well, I'm a mutant. I've got what they call an X factor in my genetic makeup, that gives me powers and more strength and stuff. That's the short version, at least." She shrugged at that. "Nah, he doesn't sleep, I don't think. I have insomnia and I've seen Prisoner wandering around late at night. No fireball head on pillow, no fires, right? Though there are extinguishers all over, and I know some stuff is probably fireproof..."

[ Captain America doesn't get sick because he's a super-soldier, Peter. Erskine's serum purged all chances of any Earth-based virus infecting his biological systems. So a common cold isn't going to do bupkiss, frankly. But the jury is still out about void-based ones, so it remains to be seen if he succumbs to something in the future.

As it is, Peter is someone very unexpected to come across - and Steve stands there for a moment, blinking. ]

It's a small world, Mister Parker. [ Because according to Steve's memories, it hasn't been more than a day since the funeral. ] Feeling under the weather?

"I am so sorry, miss."

Steve pulls Eva easily to her feet, and will be quick to disentangle his hand, and just as quick to give her a once-over. Make sure the young lady isn't suffering any injuries from being barreled into by a six-foot-two idiot.

"You okay?"

[ Anthony Edward Stark is actually the very last person Steve ever expects to see again. Well, alive anyway. His forward momentum halts as well, a flabbergasted expression filtering across his face. Tony. Is. On the train. Alive. And. On the train.

For a few seconds, he just can't process and ends up staring.

It's kind of like High Noon in a silent western. All that's missing is the tumbleweeds and dramatic music from a dinky little piano in one corner. Steve gets the feeling, as the seconds tick by, that he's going to be the one who breaks this standoff. ]

Stark?

[ Okay, well. Not the brightest thing he's ever said, but the disbelief in his tone will have to convey his astonishment adequately. That, and the way he's suddenly moving forward, a mixture of relief and grief and annoyance replacing the shock. ]

Tony, is. It's you? Really you?

"It's fine. You'd think I'd know better by now," Eva quips as she pushes hair back over her shoulder. A mental note's made to get it cut or start braiding it.

"Yea, nothing more than a bruised ego. I'm tougher than I look, promise. I'm Eva Iden'no, by the way. Welcome to VoidTreckers, where we really don't get much warning before lift-off." There's a short bow of greeting at the end.

[ It is not entirely inaccurate to call those beefy arms the 'pinnacle of human perfection' Wade. Or edging into superhuman. He has taken down a helicopter with them.

Something close to resignation flickers through his eyes but, ]

Yeah, that's me. Steve Rogers.

[ Because is he honestly the Captain anymore? Probably not, even after defeating Thanos. ]

I'm your second favorite what?

Okay, maybe Tony is the second-to-last person he expected to see on this crazy train, because the voice hits him right in the gut before he turns to look at the speaker. There she is, looking almost exactly as the day he downed the Valkyrie.

Not aged, not dead, not even the iron-spined Director of SHIELD.

Just Margaret Carter.

"... Peggy," Steve barely manages to keep his voice level, although his heart suddenly feels like its stuck just below his throat. "Yeah, I'm alive."

"Wind dukes? Never heard of them...Kenku are flightless, though? Dude! That sucks!" Because Renee knew the joy of flight, even if it wasn't exactly the type of flight that birds experienced. But she'd always felt a little sorry for birds like emu, ostriches, and kiwi. The first two were probably too big to safely fly--even herons were smaller--but the kiwi just suffered being not aerodynamic...

"Tell you what, the next time we get on a planet, I'll take you for a spin. A flight, okay? You deserve it." Just because he looked like a bird. It was enough for her, and she was...for some reason, Renee was feeling generous. So what the hell. Right??

"I'm using a mutant power. You're an actual being, a kenku. Not like...a mutant or anything, right? Therefore what we're doing is probably different. Similar, but not the same." Some sort of kinesis, though, Renee was sure.

[ That's ... perfectly fine. Not strange at all. There's nothing in the welcome brochure mentioning that the cars belong to different people. Steve decides to give her the benefit of the doubt and simply smiles politely. ]

Thanks, miss. [ A pause, then ] Who's the Overlord?

[ mostly what he means is 'is that another name for a train conductor' ]

Bucky had told her, of course, but she hadn’t believed him. Not really. Not until she saw him in the flesh.

Her resolve crumples. It’s impossible to keep a stiff upper lip in the face of all of this.

Later, Peggy will only vaguely remember throwing her arms around him and realizing he’s real, and solid, and here. She’s laughing and crying at the same time, unable to govern her emotions.

“You stood me up,” she says eventually, once she can trust herself to do so. “I stood in front of the Stork Club for hours.”

Yeah, Steve's kind of getting that impression. The last time he had so little room to himself was the Army - first in boot camp and then on the European front during the war. He and the Howling Commandos camped out in some pretty wretched places during their missions and privacy was most often a ship just passing in the night.

But he's also led a team of people with superpowers, so wandering into his new sleeping quarters and finding a kid with powers isn't. The worst thing he's ever seen.

"Am I intruding?"

[personal profile] tholes 2020-01-04 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no no no. They are NOT pulling this shit here. Steve's demeanor shifts - from angry best friend of an assassin to one that feels both wholly alien and completely familiar: The Captain. Not just Captain America, or Cap, but the leader of a war-time black ops unit.

He pushes his way far enough to make sure he's between both men, leveling a hard look at both of them.

"Enough!" Yeah, okay, maybe he is still angry. "Buck, can it. Tony, what's going on?"

"This a regular occurrence around here?" This being the radical mode of departure that they've all just suffered through.

"Glad to hear it, and thanks." He steps back once she's righted herself and holds out a hand. To shake, this time. "Steve Rogers. Pleasure to meet you, Miss Iden'no." Nevermind the bow. He's never known what to do with those.

No wings sprouting--she didn't even have fangs, to judge by the bright smile she gave him. Still, the scaly, spiked tail waving behind her was pretty demonic-looking, and she did have three pairs of horns...

And she certainly seemed friendly. But she nodded as if she understood--it at least made sense to Sarai that the man had undergone some sort of transformation, and that sort of thing wasn't completely unheard of on Hydaelyn--some voidsent could possess smallfolk and turn them into monsters, after all.

She nodded sympathetically--her shirt was purple, but she still missed her armor. The last time she'd worn anything like that was back on the goblin planet, and that clothing had been repossessed once they had returned. Frustrating, to say the least...

"Well, I honestly won't be the one making most of it, unless your foot covering needs soles," Sarai said with a shrug and a smile. "But my husband is here, and he works in leather and cloth, so he'd be the one tailoring for you. And because we're all in the same annoying situation, yes? If we can be made more comfortable by our own efforts, shouldn't we be doing our best?"

Bucky didn't flinch. In fact, he'd stepped forward, ready to trade blows again without any hesitation. At least until Steve gives him the look. He scowls like a goddamn teenager, looking from Steve, back to Tony, his hands curling tight enough that his nails were biting into his flesh hand, and the panels on his right arm were shifting around.

But he steps back, because he's not dumb or reckless enough to get in another fight with Steve. Steve could actually kick his ass unarmed, and Bucky knows it. He even manages to keep his mouth shut, though he's definitely trying to glare a hole through Tony's armor.
