To date, Conan's sole experience with a spider of this size had turned out to be a hoax intended to muddy the trail of a serial murderer by blaming some of his crimes on a local legend.

This did not appear to be a hoax, unless someone had gone to a lot of unnecessary effort to hide projectors in the kitchen.

A hallucination or a dream was still a possibility. But Conan decides to go along with it.
