A New Platform [Intro Post April!]
On the Train
Two days after they return from their mission they are awoken as usual "Good morning passengers, it is day sixteen of the month of Egret. The shop has been updated and points have been applied to passengers tickets."
Those that go to check the shop terminals will find they have indeed updated, with the option to buy larger items and also animals. The morning goes on until just after noon there is a second announcement.
"Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one." A lurch and a jolt and they are soon surrounded by the fog that means they are at a platform. Though the fog is thick, thicker than usual perhaps, there are patches on sunlight shining through and it is pleasantly warm.
The doors open and the first few to disembark do so with rucksacks on, hoods pulled up, silent and almost blank faced. Cu Chulain, Dio Brando, Disreputable Dog, Heiji Hattori, Loki Maedhros, Maglor, Naruto, Thor, Tobias Fangor.
They walk to the barriers, show their tickets and disappear.
But on the platform itself there are once again new faces. All are stood, waiting for the train.
For New Passengers
At first all they can see is steam. Billowing around them as they come to their senses. They are standing, in clothes that are not their own, styles they might not even recognise. They are carrying a rucksack on their back. For a moment it seems to just be them, alone in the white haze but then as people begin to shift or call out it will become apparent they are not alone.
The platform is not large and it holds eighteen figures all facing the tracks, all dressed in cargo trousers and hoodies. It's warm but foggy making it hard to see much, but there are clearer patches bathed in sunlight found across the platform. Both left and right the tracks disappear into the mist. Then there is a roaring sound and out of the fog arrives a train. Jet black with gold writing on the side. The Voidtrecker Express. There is a hiss as the doors slide open and out into the cold step a selection of people. Some are human, some are less so. They are wearing the same hoodie in one of the four colours, red, orange, blue and purple.
The Train
The doors hiss open. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there is anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would not be a good thing. If that is not enough, there are plenty of people on the platform now, to encourage them onto the train.
Each ICP shows the same message and next to the screens there are stacks of leaflets written by those on the train, with further information. The store rooms have been restocked with an abundance of onions, in case the passengers weren't bored of them yet.
Passengers who are not brand new will notice that the train has gotten yet longer again with a sixth sleeper cabin for new arrivals.
New passengers will find their tickets allow them into their cabins. They may need to negotiate for beds, especially if they want a top bunk!
Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches and you will hopefully find a pillow for your bed if it has not been nabbed by a roommate, there are also spare blankets for if it gets cold.
Departure
A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers and the doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, they may wish to brief their new companions.
The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view as it picks up speed.
"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express.” A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."
The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog filled sky.
"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated. Entry into Voidspace in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."
A shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding. As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever changing colours.
Welcome to the Void!

Welcome to the Void!

[ You have to admire her.......... uh, let's call it optimism if nothing else. ]
no subject
Well, I hope you have, uh, a good time here. Also what's...what's with the... [He gestured vaguely in the direction of her flower...eye. He didn't want to be rude, but there was only so long that he couldn't ask.]
no subject
Ah, this? It's just a flower! It's nothing you need to trouble yourself over.
[ Bryn might be, uh.... Bryn, but even she knows that mouthing off about her little quest might not be such a good idea in a place full of strangers. ]
no subject
[He wouldn't pry about what it was exactly if she didn't want to answer that, but he couldn't ask nothing at all when things came to mind.]
no subject
[ She's... remarkably cavalier about this. ]
no subject
Yeah, I can't imagine losing an eye is easy to go through.
[He was still really tempted to ask why it was a flower and how that kind of thing even happened...but he didn't want to make her uncomfortable, either.]
We should, uh, probably actually get on the train, at some point, too.
no subject
[ She's Fine. See? Don't Worry About It. ]
Ah– will the train depart without us if we happen to dawdle for too long?
no subject
[She sure was being awfully...uh...deflecting about the flower eye thing, but Dyme wouldn't pry, no matter how much more curious that made him. Maybe it'd been traumatic and she didn't want to talk about it--he wouldn't want to talk about how he'd lost an eye to a flower, either.]
You know...I honestly don't know. I've never waited around on the platform for too long before. I've just always figured it's better to be safe than sorry.
[Because as awful as getting kidnapped was, being stranded on a train platform in the middle of nowhere would be even more awful.]
no subject
[ You'd think she might have been warned off by that, but if anything, she just sounds more determined to stay here and see exactly what might be going on when the train isn't hanging around. ]
Surely someone must have taken it upon themselves to investigate!
no subject
[Because he hadn't actually thought of it before.]
You're not thinking about being the one to stay here and find out what happens, are you?
no subject
[ With a look her face that makes it very clear that Bryn is, in fact, thinking about being the one to stay here and find out what happens: ]
No, no! Of course not!
[ And just in case that wasn't unconvincing enough: ]
... Really!
no subject
[He wasn't convinced. He was pretty well versed in bullshit, when it came down to it.]
I mean, I guess it's not dangerous to try? But I dunno...
no subject
[ It's extremely obvious that her desire to get up to dangerous shit is battling it out with what passes for her self-preservation and then finally she heaves a huge sigh, letting her shoulders sag as she does so. ]
I suppose it'd be a waste to stay behind... for all we know it could mean missing out on what this train has to offer. And I'm certainly not going to miss out on going on an adventure like this!
no subject
[But now Dyme was curious, too. Not so curious that he would actually try staying behind to see what happened, but enough that he wanted to know what would happen.]
It'd suck to get left behind on the platform until...I don't even know. Maybe another train would come along?
no subject
[ Or have any agency at all in this situation. Same diff. ]
Are there any other trains like this that come along?
no subject
[It was all about choice, in the end.]
I've heard there are other trains, but I dunno how they're run or anything.
no subject
[ She sighs. If she can't get up to stupid reckless bullshit then what's even the point!! ]
Perhaps we'll be lucky enough to have the opportunity to explore another of these trains presented to our group eventually.
no subject
[So seeing one that was actually operating like it should would be super cool. Maybe he'd learn some things from it too, maybe get a chance to go home...]
no subject
[ And then she actually starts to look worried. ]
Could it be that our companions from home have ended up on other trains, without us?
no subject
[He hadn't even considered that other people he knew might've been kidnapped too and were just on other trains. It'd been much easier to just imagine that everyone was safe at home, missing him.]
Apparently no one was able to get any real information out of anybody in charge. And we still don't know who controls the actual train.
no subject
[ Bryn has literally never seen a train before, so who knows. ]
Could it be magically enhanced, perhaps?
no subject
Maybe? My world doesn't even have magic, so I'm kind of out of my element with all of this. [Oh, but that gave him an idea.] Maybe it's a really smart AI train.
no subject
A... what? What's an... ay-eye train?
[ She sort of sounds it out like she thinks it's a word by itself. Please forgive her. ]
no subject
An AI is an artificial intelligence. Basically it's like a really smart computer. So maybe the train is controlled by a computer instead of something that's actually living.
no subject
I see!
[ In the exact same tone of voice, with no change to her expression whatsoever: ]
What's a computer?
