What: Insomnia and dealing with things. Conan is not okay.

It was the middle of the night, and Conan was wide awake and kicking a soccerball against the wall of the gym car. As the ball rebounds off the wall again he catches it with the back of his heel and kicks it right back at the same spot on the wall.

He'd been at this for a while now. The gym car was far enough away from the sleeping cars that he shouldn't be bothering anyone, and he didn't really feel like laying out a game of solitaire tonight.

Conan bounces the ball off the top of his head, then sweeps it with his foot and returns it back to Curufin.

"In this game," he says, "There are no hands allowed. Except for the player guarding the goal."

Curufin catches the ball, then laughs and replies, "And obviously I'm not the goalie." Grin. "Elvish soccer is a lot less organized and has few rules of any kind. I'll try to play by your rules, though, if you'll explain them to me."

A small grin back.

"You'll have to tell me sometime what rules you play by. A lot of the rules for my game mostly only apply when you have enough players for a full game."

Curufin answers that grin with one of his own.

"Elvish soccer is very simple. You set up a pair of rocks at either end of a lawn or field, and those are the goal posts. Then you flip a coin to see who gets the ball at the start. And then you try to get the ball through your team's goalposts, and anything is fair, knocking the other guy down, kicking his ass, knocking his teeth down his throat. (Or her. Some Elvish women play the game.) You can handle the ball any way you like: grab it with your hands, throw it, kick it, footsweep it, knee it, run with it under your arm. One goal is one point, and you agree before you start on the number of points needed to win that particular game. And then it's a total melee!"

Conan just stares at him after hearing all that.

"That's definitely different from the game we have in my world. There are lots of rules about how it is played. And attacking other players is definitely not allowed."

Curufin looks back at him with a mischievous smile. "Your world's game is not like that? Well then, what are the rules? I'll promise to follow them."

Even though sports that resemble war are so much fun! Curufin's company in Aglon was really rowdy, and they used to use games as practice for the real thing.
