Maybe It's Just Me; Couldn't You Believe
Who: Daia and Yugi (Closed)
What: Yugi finds out that Daia had a huge crush on Kaiba
Where: Greenhouse
When: Beginning of June
Daia had been wandering until dawn and forced-sleep kicked in for the last handful of nights, now, dealing with his internal struggles. He definitely looks tired. But all he knows is that he doesn't want to sleep.
Today, he wanders aimlessly and finds himself in the Greenhouse car. He starts tending to some of the plants - if he can't make himself feel better, he might as well help some of the flowers perk up a little.
In his exhausted stupor, he begins talking to the plants.
"Do you think I should tell Kaiba that I love him? Or is it too late?"
He nods, as if the flower is talking back to him, scooping some soil around its base carefully.
"Yea, it probably is too late. He's already chosen that other boy, anyway. It would just be rude if I spoke up now."
His head sinks a little and he pauses.
"...But it hurts so much... I should have told him how I felt a long time ago..."

So that meant having to go through the Greenhouse. That was easy enough. The greenhouse was rather peaceful whenever he found himself there, but today was a different story.
As he opened the door to start going through he soon found himself pausing upon hearing Kaiba's name. It was enough to make the younger man start slowly walking over before finally seeing the other. He recognized him from when dueling demonstration and recalled the other being a very huggy person when it came to Kaiba.
But as he got closer he once again found himself pausing briefly. Did he hear that correctly? It was enough to cause the other to pause slightly and feel a tiny bit guilty. He had an inkling at that moment the two were close at the time, but now new thoughts entered his head and soon he moved in closer.
"I mean...It might hurt, but I get the feeling if you say nothing either Kaiba might worry about you being upset and not knowing why." Though for all he knew it might just cause other types of problems, but Yugi was one to accept whatever happened.
"But I am sorry if I hurt you. It... was never my intention."
no subject
"Ah, it's... you..." is the only thing he can think to say in his surprise. Come to think of it, he's never so much as met this boy, let alone learned his name.
He rubs his sleepy eyes and debates between getting up or staying on the ground. ...Well, he feels pretty low anyway. He doesn't want to get up, now.
He just looks lower towards his own lap.
"No, it's okay... I..." he pauses, chewing on his lip a little. "I don't think I had much of a chance, anyway..."
Being an immortal vampire, even though Kaiba knows, makes it all that much harder, right?
no subject
"I...honestly am not sure of that really. Kaiba before all of this was rather clueless to things like feelings and such. It was a new concept." So for all the other knew if Daia had said something first this could have gone a very different way.
"The only reason he even started to question it was because of that post and... I honestly thought you two were close after the duel demonstrate, so I honestly wouldn't have been surprised if he would have developed something for you."
no subject
But, even still, that doesn't eliminate the other problem.
And he's still coming to terms talking about this. He doesn't even know if Kaiba's told Yugi the truth about himself. But... he should try. Even if it makes things a little more complicated.
"That's... that's not the only reason it wouldn't have worked. Don't get me wrong, I'd be thrilled if it had. But... I'm not exactly mortal. I've... I've lived a very long time. I'd live forever, but... Kaiba wouldn't."
Of course, it'd be different if Kaiba asked to turn him. But, he also wouldn't force that onto him. He almost had before, with Shishou
and he'll be forever glad he didn't, and he shudders to think what would have been if he had turned that man.no subject
"So...you have a much longer lifespan and that is why you also thought to not say anything?"
no subject
"Yea..."
That and most humans don't want to date a vampire anyway. Even though Daia's never attacked a person, he was viewed as a danger just about everywhere he went. And even though he knows Kaiba never really saw him as a danger, well... He still figured he shouldn't push his own luck.
"I also thought he might not want to see me anymore if I did..."
no subject
He was a different person at least trying to be anyway.
"I can understand that being a rather scary possibility and before now I would have probably told you it was always a possibility. But... considering... well... the fact he and I made the choice we have kind of shows you that he's different... and he honestly wouldn't do that now. I think he would still want to be friends because honestly... that is something he still needs and it's important that he has someone like you."
no subject
"I...I'm important? To Kaiba?" He's every bit astonished as he sounds. To think that Kaiba would value him, even after choosing Yugi, it's... almost unbelievable.
But then, that's not Kaiba's or Yugi's fault. He's not used to people sticking around. ...Or worse.
But it still... feels surreal. Does Kaiba see him as important? Would he really stick around with him? Even without romance?
"Do you... Do you promise?"
no subject
"So I promise that is the case because I have a huge amount of confidence that it's the case."
no subject
He moves to give Yugi a hug. A hug sounds nice, and Yugi's been so nice to him, even knowing that Daia has a crush on Kaiba.
no subject
He was also honestly glad that Kaiba had friends that cared. "Just make sure if he does something stupid to call him out on it, okay?"
no subject
After a few moments of hugs and cries, Daia takes a step back.
"Uhm... Can we be friends, too?" he asks a little shyly. "Just... you've been so nice to me. And you didn't have to be."
Yugi could have hated him, and had every right to do so. But he consoled him instead.
no subject
"I can't even think of a single reason we can't be either. Welcome to the friend group."
some time later
"Daia, I've been looking for you," he said simply. "I didn't see you after the mission...obviously you can handle sun, so I thought you'd want to play. Were you sick?"
no subject
His eyes are a little wide when he turns to look at Kaiba.
"Oh... Uhm... n-no... I wasn't sick..."
He looks down toward the floor. Actually, not feeling well wasn't entirely wrong, either.
"I just... I guess... I was having... A bad day?" He flounders for his words. He knows he should talk to Kaiba about this, but he doesn't want the other to feel bad. And he certainly doesn't want to trouble him.
Kaiba has every right to be happy.
no subject
He lowered his head to look at him. "I'm sorry if I hurt you."
no subject
"No... I mean, you don't have to get me anything..."
He sighs, rubbing his own arm as he fidgets for a moment.
"Kaiba, I..." He can feel tears start to form in his eyes. He hates this. He hates it so much. Why does Kaiba have to find out this way?
"It's not your fault. I just... have no right to say it..."
He looks down, his hair hiding his face. He can't, he just can't bear to look Kaiba in the face right now.
"I... I like you... A lot. I l..." he bites his lip. He has to get this all out. A breath. "I love you. I know... I know I have no right to say it now - you chose him. But everyone... everyone told me I should tell you... I'm sorry..."
Tears start falling below him to the floor. This is so painful - for him and for Kaiba. He feels like he shouldn't have said anything at all.
"I'm not... I'm not expecting anything. Just... please... still be my friend..."
no subject
Kaiba's expression is pained. This is absolutely the last position he ever expected to find himself in. Sure, admiring fans had crushed on him every day, but he hadn't been to school in years, hadn't been in a position to actually face them.
Turning down a fawning girl who never knew him at all was easy. Turning down someone he felt protective of was far harder.
"I didn't know...I'm sorry. It happened so fast."
And he reached out to cautiously attempt to comfort him, unsure if he was still welcome.
"I'm sticking around. But I hope you find someone better for you than I would've been..."
no subject
He got it out. He has his answer. So why does he feel so much worse? The tears flow even more.
Daia didn't pull away when Kaiba reached out. He didn't want to. He moves forward half a step, wanting so badly to hug Kaiba while he cries. But can he? Is it allowed or even appropriate at this point? And it's a long hesitation before he finally asks.
"Can I.. hug you...?"
no subject
He's still new to the whole social relationship thing.
no subject
When the sobbing starts to let up, his grip will gently lighten as he rests against Kaiba.
"I hope... I hope that he makes you happy..." he mutters between sniffs. "I mean... he must. But you deserve to be happy, Kaiba..."
no subject
"And when you find someone...and you will, with your attitude and looks, how could you not? They'd better treat you well, or they'll have to answer to me."
no subject
But the fact that Kaiba wants to fight anyone who mistreats him, it means a lot. Even being only a friend, Kaiba's still willing to be that white knight if he faces trouble.
It's a soft sigh - a longing wish that it could have worked out with Kaiba. But he did miss his chance. And Yugi makes him happy.
It's... okay that he lost this time. He'll be okay.
Even though his face is tear-stained, he manages a genuine smile.
"Thank you, Kaiba. It means... so much to me that you'll still be here for me."
no subject
Kaiba gives him a playful nudge. "Think you'll be all right?"
no subject
"Yea, I think I will."
And then Daia looks at the hand Kaiba has the present in - he did say it was for him, after all. Now that all the drama is over, he's curious what it contains.
"Can I still have it? Only if you want to, of course."
no subject
Kaiba smiles and presses the small package in his hands, and inside is a custom-built deck, vampire with a touch of earth.
"I built you a starter deck to start the game. All the cards complement each other and will help you drain your opponents' life points."
no subject
"I love it, Kaiba. Thank you."
He bounces up to give Kaiba another hug. And when he takes a step back again, he gives his best mischievous smile (which isn't so much mischievous as it looks like a child trying to contain his joy, trying not to let on how excited he is for the presents under the Christmas Tree.
"I'm going to win against you someday."
