Intro: Into the Void

On the Platform

At first all you can see if steam. Billowing around you as you come to your senses. You are standing, in clothes that are not your own, styles you might not even recognise. You are carrying a rucksack on your back. For a moment it seems to just be you, alone in the white haze but then the steam begins to fade and you realise you aren’t alone.

The platform is not very large, but it hold ten people all facing the tracks, all wearing similar clothing. The tracks stretch left and right into steam, or perhaps fog. Nothing can be seen to either side. There is a wall around the platform and the only entrance is a security gate. It cannot be open, nor do there seem to be any staff.

What there is, is a train. Jet black and gleaming where it stands on the rails. Voidtrecker Express is emblazoned in the engine in gold. There is a hiss as the doors slide open.

Boarding, it seems, is the only option.

The Train

A horn sounds and anyone not on the train will feed the need to board immediately. The train is empty. But it seems ready for you. The stores are full of food, the carriages are all clean. Every screen on the train is showing the same message.

The luggage carriage, strangely, seems full of luggage. Or at least the cases. Suitcases, bags, trunks. All empty. But it at least will make good storage for your own bags once you have unpacked.

Carriages

Just like the message reads, your ticket is required to enter your cabin. The names are written on screens outside each cabin but once you are inside bed choice seems to be up to you. It might mean there is a fight for the top bunk.

Room is right but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches and you will find a pillow for each bed as well as extra blankets, in case it gets cold.

Departure

A second horn, to encourage any stragglers to enter and then the doors slide shut. It seems, for good or for ill you are riding this train to… wherever it is going.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express." A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. The train begins to move, shuddering along the tracks, fog obscuring the view from the windows.

"Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train tilts, the movement changes. It seems, as impossible as it might seem to some, that this train is flying.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated."
A shudder runs through the train. A lurch to the left, a jolt to right, the feeling of going far too fast and then a flash, bright colours that are almost blinding.

As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a multicoloured ever shifting void.

Your journey has begun.

"Your guess is as good as mine. I don't know. I suppose it offers a way to pass the time. Not one I'd have chosen, but..."

Sarai shrugged at that. She'd have much preferred a library or a music room, though she'd already decided she'd practice in the gym as the closest thing to. Less likely to bother people there.

Ah. That made sense. This trip did have the potential for boredom, if no monsters or mayhem immediately presented themselves.

Luckily he had her here, and they could keep each other company.

"I doubt we'll be at peace for too long."

"That's a given. I can't imagine things will go smoothly--not that they necessarily had already, either."

She sighed and shrugged. "We'll just have to muddle through, the way we always do."

"Muddle?" Dread leaned back to laugh. Excuse you, dear wife -- they showed up, kicked ass, and took names! "They wish we would muddle!"

Someone has a more delicate touch than her husband. Not everything looks like something to punch, to her.

Now...to shoot, well, that might well be a different story, it's true.

"I am a bit more subtle than you, husband, darling," Sarai drawled, though that was a definite smile playing around her lips. "So perhaps I am muddling, at least for the moment?"

To be fair, a hell of a lot of things in Eorzea DID need to be punched. Or shot. Or both. Why would here be different?

"I can be subtle. But I scare people, here. They're not used to either of our kind... but size counts for a lot."
sweetnessandfight: (cheering you on)

"Don't look so solemn. You know we work best as a team--I can't see why I wouldn't be out with you." Even if they hadn't been assigned to the same team, they just tended to pair off. That had been the way, through events in Ishgard and Ala Mhigo. Why it would change here...

"So no one should be afraid--unless they decide you're a giant and I'm a voidsent, but let's hope not, right?"

Dread shook his head. She ought to know perfectly well why he disliked scaring people by his size...

"The former seems more likely. It's just -- they aren't used to Roegadyn, clearly. Someone my size doesn't feel right to them. Whereas no one will think you terrifying because you're short. And if the horns and scales worry them, that'll last only till you smile and win them over in a heartbeat."
sweetnessandfight: (o...kay)

[personal profile] sweetnessandfight 2019-07-16 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Sarai knew and understood, but this time was different. He hadn't really tried to do any of those things. Dread wasn't even trying to scare anyone now. Nor would he.

Not unless they deserved it, anyway. Same as Sarai would do, herself.

"Oh, maybe, but I'm not so sure. I can try to do the latter, but if they're already frightened because of lore on their world, I might not have much success, so..." She shrugged. She'd resigned herself to that, so all she could do was her best. And try to help Dread along the way.

"You exude non-frightening." With the obvious exception for whoever got on her bad side, but that was, after all, not a very easy feat. Whereas he did not exude that, not at all.
sweetnessandfight: (uncertain)

[personal profile] sweetnessandfight 2019-07-17 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh please. The moment someone gets you to laugh, how can they be scared of you? You turn from stern and scary to jolly. Once they know you've got a sense of humor, they'll be fine." Sarai was absolutely certain of that. Exude it, Dread might not, but that didn't mean that he intended to be scary. It was like Sarai intending to be cute. She didn't always mean to, but it certainly happened.

"Let's hope." After all, this whole adventure could lead straight into battle, chaos, or worse. Senses of humor might not have time to come to the forefront.
