Intro: Into the Void
On the Platform
At first all you can see if steam. Billowing around you as you come to your senses. You are standing, in clothes that are not your own, styles you might not even recognise. You are carrying a rucksack on your back. For a moment it seems to just be you, alone in the white haze but then the steam begins to fade and you realise you aren’t alone.
The platform is not very large, but it hold ten people all facing the tracks, all wearing similar clothing. The tracks stretch left and right into steam, or perhaps fog. Nothing can be seen to either side. There is a wall around the platform and the only entrance is a security gate. It cannot be open, nor do there seem to be any staff.
What there is, is a train. Jet black and gleaming where it stands on the rails. Voidtrecker Express is emblazoned in the engine in gold. There is a hiss as the doors slide open.
Boarding, it seems, is the only option.
The Train
A horn sounds and anyone not on the train will feed the need to board immediately. The train is empty. But it seems ready for you. The stores are full of food, the carriages are all clean. Every screen on the train is showing the same message.
The luggage carriage, strangely, seems full of luggage. Or at least the cases. Suitcases, bags, trunks. All empty. But it at least will make good storage for your own bags once you have unpacked.
Carriages
Just like the message reads, your ticket is required to enter your cabin. The names are written on screens outside each cabin but once you are inside bed choice seems to be up to you. It might mean there is a fight for the top bunk.
Room is right but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches and you will find a pillow for each bed as well as extra blankets, in case it gets cold.
Departure
A second horn, to encourage any stragglers to enter and then the doors slide shut. It seems, for good or for ill you are riding this train to… wherever it is going.
"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express." A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. The train begins to move, shuddering along the tracks, fog obscuring the view from the windows.
"Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."
The train tilts, the movement changes. It seems, as impossible as it might seem to some, that this train is flying.
"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated."
A shudder runs through the train. A lurch to the left, a jolt to right, the feeling of going far too fast and then a flash, bright colours that are almost blinding.
As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a multicoloured ever shifting void.
Your journey has begun.

Departure
You stick! That's wonderful! Hello! [Though the glare has her lifting an arm to shield her eyes as well, ducking down with a slight hiss. When she lowers her arm again, her eyes go almost comically wide at what's outside.]
Oh, dear, that can't be good...
no subject
[ He turns and notices that apparently his small use of his powers had been witnessed because of course it was. Peter bites back grumble as he tries to do the thing he's probably the absolute worst at- ]
Uh-no? I just... [ Maybe he should have thought of something to say before opening his mouth. ] Have really good... balance?
[ Yeah, he wouldn't even believe that so he looks something to just change the subject with and maybe she'll forget about what she just saw. ]
Uh-actually-if we're really traveling through the void-which is theorectical at best because that would like completely redefine the laws of quantum physics as we know them and-well actually-I met a girl earlier that's another universe-so I guess it's not actually theoretical anymore?
Uh... anyway-I think this is kinda what would be expected? But that means the train's probably made out of something like vibranium-or probably stronger.
no subject
Quantum...physics? You've lost me, I fear--though I am vaguely familiar with other dimensions back home...
[Sarai nods, then, although she's got no idea what vibranium is, either. ] Perhaps adamantite, or possibly it's enchanted, especially if this is the Void we're travelling through. Fascinating! I hope I get a chance to examine it further! [It's the scholar in her, forgive her!]
no subject
Yeah-you know-or maybe you don't? I guess it could be called something different in another universe but it's a branch of physics? It's kinda a thing to help describe nature at the smallest scale of energy levels and subatomic particles and stuff.
But if the multiverse is a real thing that completely changes what we know-which is awesome-but there was kinda a big thing happening in my universe that I need to get back to? But I mean, if someone could get us here-that means there's gotta be away back.
I mean-doors work both ways, right? Well, most doors really only open in one direction but you can go in and out-so you know what I mean.
I think.
Do you know what I mean?
no subject
No...physics, I'm afraid I'm not familiar with...but perhaps you can explain it to me later? It sounds quite amazing...[if slightly above her level. Sarai is quick and bright, but she wouldn't claim to be genius level...]
Yes, that I do--if we were summoned here, we should be able to be sent back. Preferably to the time we left...I do suspect it should be no trouble, considering where we already are...[At least where she's from, one does not travel the Void with impunity.]
no subject
[ he admits, thinking carefully about how he'd start explaining someone-He should probably start with basic science concepts like Newton's law. ]
Yeah! Exactly! I mean, I've never actually traveled through the void or multiverse-even traveling in space is new for me.
no subject
[Likely that has as much meaning to him as his babble means to her. She bites her lower lip.] I'm still interested, though.
I--what is space? I only know the space between dimensions, and that's the Void to me, so...I suppose that means I'm from a terrible backwater, but. [Giving him an awkward smile, now. What can you do?]
Oh! I'm Sarai! Sarai Thunderstorm! I'm sorry, how terribly rude of me!
no subject
[ He pauses because while he's perfectly capable of rambling about space and science in general for several days on end, he's not exactly sure where to start. ]
S-so uh... you know what a world is-right? Well where I'm from we also call them planets because we discovered there's more than just the Earth-uh Earth is my home planet. Anyway-all the planets revolve around the sun-or the ones in my solar system-It's really hard to explain this without a diagram, sorry.
but uh the space in between planets is just called space. There's no air out in space though so it's sometimes referred to as a vacuum.
no subject
[It wasn't as if they didn't have astrolabes on Hydaelyn, they were just rather different from the ones Peter likely had in mind--or his diagrams, for that matter.]
I come from Hydaelyn. We have earth, but it is just the ground--and aether, that is magic. Is your planet called Earth for that reason? Because it is a word for the ground you walk on? [Clever enough, in her mind. And simple, you wouldn't get lost, there.]
No air is a vacuum? I am not sure we've ever encountered anything like that--save underwater, but that's certainly not a vacuum, I shouldn't think...
It's nice to meet you as well, Peter! Please go on?
no subject
[ He explains, voice going up an octave as he's clearly happy to talk about this. ]
Planets are different. 'Cause they're solid and have different composition-I mean most things in the universe have some amount of hydrogen in them- I mean even water is comprised of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen.
anyways space is uh... space? Like there's nothing out there- no air, no water, no gravity even so it's just... space-but in like spaceships and stuff they pressurize it so it's 'airtight' and air can't escape and this is like... the worst example I could give.
Uh... oh! I got it!
[ He pulls the notepad and pencil out of his pocket and opens up to a blank page so he can draw a quick diagram of a solar system. ]
So... let's say this circle is a sun-it has a gravitational pull-you know what gravity is, right?
no subject
No, you have to pressurize things if you go underwater, though, too--or have magical means to not be crushed and be able to breathe. It's the same principle, yes? Just no magic?
[Because Sarai realizes, on Hydaelyn they do via magic some things that Peter's people do without it. They're a bit like the Garleans that way--and the thought disturbs her briefly, but if his people just do without magic, maybe they haven't been afflicted by the Garleans' madness. He was too sweet to think that of him.]
Go on, tell me more!
no subject
[ He draws a few scattered smaller circles to indicate planets. ]
And everything in between-[ he scribbles around his makeshift drawing. ] Is space!
And yeah-though you have to break the sound barrier to be able to even leave Earth's atmosphere so you have to be going at least- 343 meters per second. So, there's like all kinds of training you have to go through-usually.
I didn't. I kinda... just ended up in Space helping someone-and got stuck-stuck to the side of the ship.
Anyways, so that's space-and kinda space travel-there's still a bunch of points humans haven't figured out yet-still can't travel at the speed of light which is 299,792,458 meters per second-WAY faster than the speed of sound.
no subject
[It was definitely going to take Sarai some time to digest, but she thought that she could find some sense in it. It was something she might want to discuss with Cid Garlond, even, if she ever got back to Hydaelyn...]
Certainly nothing we can create at the moment has that potential. And yet your folk do it fairly commonly?
