A new platform [intro post September]
For those on the train
“Good morning passengers, it is day one of the month of Bassoon.” The train announces the morning the month changes. It seems the train counts months in days of thirty. Team Points have been updated on the system.
The day continues as most days do, chores, eating, getting ready for another day. But those who suspect that a change of month may bring something else are correct. It is only an hour or two later that there is another announcement.
“Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void imminent.”
By now they should know to hold on as the train jerks and jolts. There is only fog outside the windows but the train soon comes to a stop. The doors hiss open.
As they exit into the fog they may notice Evie exiting from the luggage carriage door. Much like Hibiki the last time they were on a platform. She leaves the train, backpack on her back as she walks through the station. She heads no call, reacts to no words and cannot be stopped as she walks to the ticket barrier and disappears through it.
Strange. But even stranger still is that there on the platform that whole time is Evie. Dressed in purple, backpack on back, with her are others. Waiting for the train.
For new arrivals
At first all they can see if steam. Billowing around them as they come to their senses. They are standing, in clothes that are not their own, styles they might not even recognise. They are carrying a rucksack on your back. For a moment it seems to just be them, alone in the white haze but then the steam begins to fade and they realise they aren’t alone.
The platform is not very large, but it hold twelve figures all facing the tracks, all wearing similar clothing. The tracks stretch left and right into steam, or perhaps fog. Nothing can be seen to either side. There is a wall around the platform and the only entrance is a ticket barrier. It cannot be open, nor do there seem to be any staff.
What there is, is a train. Jet black and gleaming where it stands on the rails.Voidtrecker Express is emblazoned in the engine in gold. There is a hiss as the doors slide open.
Out step a selection of people, some less human than others, wearing clothes just like those worn by those on the platform.
The Train
The doors hiss open. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there is anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would not be a good thing.
Once on board there is lots to explore. Passengers both old and new will hopefully be delighted to see the boredom of this train journey is somewhat alleviated by the introduction of a game carriage. Plenty of games, both familiar and new to play with your new travelling companions.
Each ICP shows the same message. If Red team go and look they will find a box in the luggage compartment that contains their prize. A dralite themed cake lolly each. There are enough for the new members of Red team too, share in your teams previous success!
The food stores have been topped up with new fresh food. Salmon has taken over as the primary ingredient of choice. Hopefully everyone likes fish!
New passengers will find their tickets allow them into their cabins. They may need to negotiate for beds, especially if they want a top bunk!
Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches and you will hopefully find a pillow for your bed if it has not been nabbed by a roommate, there are also spare blankets for if it gets cold.
Departure
A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers and the doors slide shut. For those who boarded two weeks ago they will know what is coming next.
The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view as it picks up speed.
"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express.” A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."
The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog filled sky.
"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated."
Hopefully someone warns you that you really want to heed that warning because a moment later there is a shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding.
As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever changing colours.
Welcome to voidspace.

I saw the name on the side of the engine. Voidtrecker! Apparently we are going somewhere through the Void. How long have you been here, Father?
[ A pity indeed. Can you imagine a team with four Fëanorians on it??? ]
no subject
Yes, we do. It's actually quite interesting. You'll see. [He hesitates for a moment counting the days.] That would be about two weeks. Local time. I don't know how that translates to anywhere else.
[They would slay every...uh, oh, sorry, that's kind of inappropriate word to use. Considering the circumstances. They would win everything. Yes, that's definitely better.]
no subject
I'll be looking forward to it!
Two weeks? I guess that would be long enough to get some idea of what this voyage might be like. Where have you been and what have you done in these two weeks?
[ Win, yes. Definitely better. And certainly better than they'd be KILLIN' IT!! ]
no subject
How it's like? Not spectacular. [That's not a complaint. Far from it. It is a huge improvement over his previous situation. And yet they must invent ways to occupy themselves.] Not much has happened apart from a few incidents, one mysterious disappearance, and even more mysterious reappearance. [And a party. It just doesn't seem important enough to mention.] The train did malfunction briefly but even that gave me no clue to the principles of its operation. [A frown crosses his face, just a flash of irritation, but it's gone as soon as it has appeared.] It took it a day to resume its proper functions.
It's quite a curious machine. You'll see for yourself once you're boarded.
no subject
I guess we've both experienced enough spectacular events in our lives to make a break welcome.
[ Curufin understands that flash of irritation! He and his father are alike in that, they always want to know how things work. And clearly, there's a magnificent device here in front of them. ]
I'm eaten up with curiosity already! I take it the crew of this VoidTrecker wouldn't let you get near its engine?
no subject
[That's still an understatement and they both know it.]
They wouldn't. I have never seen anyone of the crew. Not once. We tried to get there. Actually, Tony... I don't know if you have met Tony Stark yet. You most certainly will if you haven't already. [The self-proclaimed train's leader is impossible to miss.] What's important however is that he tried to break into the engine carriage by force but all his efforts were in vain. [The storage carriage probably has some scorch marks left on the shelves.] You'll see why when we board the train. [Feanor would like a second opinion on that wall.]
no subject
The crew don't make themselves available either? Strange. Maybe they and the engineer are this world's equivalent of the Maiar? I haven't met Tony yet, but I'm sure I will. He tried to break into the locomotive? [ He can't help but smile. ] What did he do, in his attempt to break in? I'll be interested to see what the effects were. [ Curufin will be glad to give a second opinion. He made himself a demolitions expert in two worlds, and he was already pretty good at it in Arda, what with all those mining operations. ]
no subject
[That smile gets one in response.] He blasted some kind of energy beam at it. To no effect. On the wall at least, because he did cause some amount of damage to the furniture in the vicinity. The wall? It wasn't even scratched. What's more, I wasn't able to determine what is it made from. Other than it is metal. Maybe you could.
[Feanor does not hesitate to admit that at that point his son has seen more of the world, or more precisely worlds, then he had. He's willing to refer to Curufin's expertise on the subject.]
no subject
[ Oh how these two love to discuss the technologies they understand or wonder about! ] An energy beam, huh? Was it from a hand-held device? I wonder how the energy is generated? But I guess it wasn't enough to breach the engine compartment wall, and that says a lot about the wall. I'll take a look at it when we board, maybe I can determine its nature.
[ Curufin may not have more expertise on this particular subject, but he'll give it his best. ]
Say, I notice that you're wearing red and I'm wearing orange. What do you think that means?
no subject
He did have some kind of source built into his armour but I'm yet to ask him about the principles of its operation.
[Time flows quicker here to someone used to measuring it in Valinor years. The fact that it's only a matter of perception doesn't change much.]
Oh, those? Everyone on the train has been assigned to a team. The assignment is marked by the colour of the clothes you have been given. There are four of them: red, orange, blue, purple. I don't have a working theory what makes one assigned to one or the other, only speculation, but it doesn't seem random.
[Red team has some really smart skilled fighters... but so does the purple, and blue, and orange. There is a pattern but he hasn't figured it out yet.]
no subject
Tony had an energy source built into his armor? What a shame we never thought of that. Yes, I'd certainly be interested to know how that works.
[ Like Fëanor, Curufin is is noticing the apparent speed of time here. Maybe their perception will adapt after a while. ]
So you're Red Team and I'm Orange Team, eh? That makes it sound as though we'll be competing against each other. But I do wonder, if it isn't random, how team membership is decided. Maybe we'll figure it out.
no subject
[Tony has no idea what awaits him. There will be no end to questions.]
I don't think the division into teams matters much. [Fëanor just shrugs.] It looks completely arbitrary and I'm yet to see a situation when it actually makes a difference. Other than assigning tasks to do on the train. There is no crew so all the mundane necessities like cooking or cleaning we must do by ourselves.
[Not that different from when they were traveling around Valinor in those earlier...happier days. A bit more convenient without the need to hunt for food and with the help of several modern inventions that make life easier.]
no subject
Heh, we'll never get bored if we have to do housemaid service as well as all the other things we do.
[ Curufin remembers those days in Valinor, when Fëanor and his sons trooped around the mountains and the countryside in search of new ores to refine, new gemstones to cut, and anything else that popped into their minds. He remembers those as happy days, despite the tension between Finwë's two families. ]
no subject
I gladly cede my part to you if you truly find such menial task interesting.
[Of course he would never do this. Fëanor might not revel in the prospect of doing the laundry but he'll never dump the work that was his to do on any of his sons.]
I'm sure we can find more engaging projects to occupy ourselves with.
no subject
Curufin laughs. He knows who he got his own ironic sense of humor from. ]
I'm sure I'd be deliriously happy to do double duty in the laundromat. [ He knows his dad is joking, but he'd do just about anything for his father. ]
There must be some way to find an opportunity to do some forge work. Not on the train, probably! But maybe we'll stop at a world where we can find the materials we need and build a forge, and make some useful items. [ Such as swords! ]
no subject
Sadly not on the train.
[Not even a single source of an open fire. How horrible is that? Though, actually reasonable. Fire hazard on a small enclosed space traveling through deadly Void? Not a good idea. Probably better without open fire. Though having Fëanor on the train is a potential fire hazard in itself so...]
I certainly hope so. There are several things I am missing.
[A sword would be really nice.]
no subject
We wouldn't want to set the train on fire. [ Grin. Let's hear it for spirits of fire! ] It would be awkward if we had to bail out the emergency hatch while in Void transit.
We ought to make a list of all the things we'd forge if we got the chance.
[ Swords first! ]
no subject
[Fëanor expertly fakes a solemn nod. He would have fooled anyone. Well, almost anyone. Curufin knows his father too well not to notice that his shoulders are slightly shaking while he's trying not to chuckle. Can this train really survive both of them at the same time?]
I could think of a couple of things that I'd like to have. A sword would be perfect. [But those take time to make.] I don't see much need to have on the train itself but shall we land anywhere, it will definitely be good to have at least something.
[And what will he do when he finally gets to a forge some time in the future? Stupid distillation device for Tony Stark. But there other reasons behind that choice. Uncharacteristically unselfish ones. If only he had a week, not mere hours... but that is all in the future and right now he's mind is on swords.]
no subject
Yes, I guess we probably won't need swords on the train. But we might need them if we make a stop at a violent world, and I'd prefer an Elvish sword, preferably a replica of the one I once owned. I'm sure you'd like to have one like your original sword, too. I'd like to make some more tools, though I do have my tool kit with me. It just has some of the basics, not my whole inventory.
[ Tony wants to make some moonshine whiskey? Perfect. Curufin used to do that in Himlad, and not only did the Fëanorions drink the stuff, but they sold it all over East Beleriand, Ossiriand, and the Blue Mountains and made some extra cash. Curufin would certainly be interested in Tony's methods, and might even volunteer to help. ]
wrap? they get on the train together and all is right in the world (for now)
[No wonder given the place he was taken, or rather sent, from. Fëanor has reasons to think he'd been let out on purpose. To think that someone is able to steal a soul from Mandos is delightful in its own right, if petty, but that's probably not possible anyway.]
It cannot stay like this. I'm certain we will find a way to equip ourselves properly.
[You were all up to a lot of interesting adventures while he was stuck in the Halls...it's not that he's jealous...well, he is, just a little...]
Wrap!
I'm certain we will. We're resourceful people. [ Smile. ]
[ Curufin would have loved to have shared all those adventures with his father, but oh well, now they can share adventures! Better late than never. ]
