Double the Bunny, Double the Fun

Who: WangJi and You! ... with closed action to WuXian
Where: Greenhouse Car, Dining Car, randomly around the train

What: WangJi has retrieved his new rabbit from the luggage car and wants to introduce it to the train... and find his husband
Warnings: Fluff? Is fluff a warning?

WangJi had finally picked up his request from the luggage car, a small black rabbit that was both a friend for Little Rabbit and a surprise for his husband... since he wanted him to name it since he had gotten to name the last one.

So he was wandering the train with the black rabbit in his arms, standing out brilliantly against his white sleeves. He wanted the rabbit to get used to the sights and sounds of the train, the same way that Little Rabbit was used to them as well.

In the course of his exploration with the rabbit, he made it to the dining car to see what herbs and vegetables were available for a snack and through the library. He avoided the music car because he didn't want to upset the small rabbit with too much noise.

Finally, he decided to take the new rabbit to meet his companion, Little Rabbit. For the moment, he was going to let them get used to each other through the fence of what would be their shared hutch, letting them not see the other rabbit as a threat.

But the black rabbit, of course, wanted to explore the garden car, hopping around and sniffing the plants.

"Careful, little one," WangJi said to the rabbit, kneeling in between where the rabbit was exploring the hutch where Little Rabbit was sitting, watching the new arrival.

Finally, he found his husband. Somehow in a living arrangement that was basically a straight line, it was still hard to find people.

"Wei Ying."

He approached, holding the black rabbit in his arms.

"Did he? That would make it difficult to be able to get one son's attention over another."

"Very!" She sighs in fondly exasperated memory. "I prefer their Mother-names, and most of my sons did the same, and told me earnestly that it was because it was the name I gave them, but sometimes I wonder if it was because they were a little exasperated at hearing how similar their Father-names were!"

"If I may ask, what is the difference between father and mother names in your world? Is there a specific order for how one chooses those?"

"Yes, although it's not a strict ruling, you know. But usually, the father-name is given at birth, or close to it. It's no unusual for it to be... well, like how Feanaro named all his sons after his father, in some way. Although most people are not quite so... pointed in the sort of names they choose."

She rolls her eyes at the memory. Honestly, naming their firstborn "Third Finwe" just to spite his brother....

"A mother-name might be given at birth, if the mother has a particular strong insight, but is often given later - mother-names are often prophetic, or at least, they hold something of what a mother sees in her child, or hopes for their life. Our Curufin, here - his father-name is Curufinwe, his own father's name, you see. But I named him Atarinke - Little Father - because I looked at him and I knew that he would be a wonderful father one day, as his father was in turn."

She sometimes wishes she had not, because few had realised what she intended, and Curufin had taken both his names and tried to make himself a carbon copy of his father, and she knows how badly the failing hurt him.

"How do your people name their children?"

"That is interesting... and similar to how we name our own.

When a child is born, a few days after birth, elder male familiar members meet with the parents to give input on the child's birth name. It could be a sentiment of what they would like for their life or something that means something to them. It is usually only one character.

Later in life, when a child comes of age, they are given a courtesy name. It may have been picked out as early as the birth name, but they do not begin to go by it until maturity. This also has a meaning behind it. Some without courtesy names assigned by parents will pick their own.

My birth name is Lan Zhan. You will often hear Wei Ying... Wei WuXian referring to me as such. 'Lan' is the color blue. 'Zhan' also refers to a shade of blue. 'WangJi' means to forget worldly matters."

"Characters? Ah! So you use a character system for your language? How lovely! But you are correct, that does sound very similar to ours. And 'blue'... ah, such a lovely meaning for your name. Is that why you wear a blue ribbon?"

"We do. Different characters have different sounds and different meanings. I can show you sometime when I have paper."

He had a bunny. Cute, but not useful for writing.

"This?" He reached up to touch his ribbon. "Forehead ribbon. The forehead ribbon symbolizes self-restraint. It cannot be touched. After meeting your destined one, only then do you no longer need to be restrained."

"I would like that." She smiles at him and nods.

"I see! Then will you give the ribbon to your destined one?"

"I will make sure to find some that would be suitable so I can show you properly."

Luckily, he was known to have beautiful calligraphy so it would be easy for her to see them.

"We still wear our forehead ribbons, but our partner may remove it and we do not need to hold back from showing them how we feel."

Also known as WuXian (and cabinmates by association) will likely be the only people to see WangJi without it.

"Awwww." She smiles. "That is the sweetest thing! So your beloved becomes your restraint, as it were!"

"Yes, they become the person that you can truly be yourself with. Other than one's self, the forehead ribbon can only be touched by parents and one's partner."

For as stuffy as Gusu Lan might have been considered by other sects, they really were kind of romantic.

"That truly is so very sweet." She smiles. "I am glad you were fortunate enough to find your beloved - and also, that he is here on the train!"

"I am glad as well. I spent so long without WuXian that it would be difficult to be here without him."

He considered himself lucky that even though WuXian had left, he had returned almost immediately.

"It is hard to be apart from the one you love."

Nerdanel says sadly, and her eyes dim in long memory.

"I am glad you have your chance here."

"Yes, we both know how that feels. I'm glad you have a chance here as well."

He smiled, watching as the little black rabbit wiggled away from between them, wandering a bit before hopping over to look at Little Rabbit sitting in his hutch watching them.

"They seem to be getting more comfortable with each other."

She smiles faintly back at him and nods, packing the grief away, as she has done so often before.

"They are. I think you will be able to let them interact freely soon - they seem quite curious with each other!"

"I hope so too. I want them to get along. Like all animals, they can be annoyed by outsiders, but they both seem interested."

And they had not displayed aggressive signs towards each other through the fence.

"Perhaps, while you are here, we could let them meet each other without the fence."

Another hand to help catch on the off chance they needed to be separated.

She claps softly.

"Oh! Yes, I would dearly like to be here for that. And with two we can act swifter should they startle each other."

"Mn." His thought exactly.

WangJi moved to the enclosure where Little Rabbit was, the small black rabbit sitting up to watch what WangJi was doing. WangJi picked up Little Rabbit carefully, bringing him out of the enclosure and setting him down on the ground a slight distance from the black rabbit. Enough that they weren't immediately next to each other and had some space, but close enough that they could see each other.

For the moment, they both stood at a distance, sniffing at each other, Little Rabbit leaning towards the other while trying to not actually move closer.

"So far, it is good."

Nerdanel watches them closely, shifting so she can grab if either decided to get aggressive.

"They seem more curious than anything."

She nods, pleased.

"Have you a snack for them?"

WangJi was standing back to give them space, but he was also ready to move if he saw the rabbits' first meeting starting to go badly. It was better to have a lot of non-aggressive, separated meetings than have them try to fight.

"I do."

He took out his qiankun pouch and produced some of the herbs he'd started carrying around to treat the rabbits. The black rabbit watched what WangJi did curiously. Little Rabbit knew this likely meant food and hopped over to him, sitting up and pawing at the front of his robes. Food? Yes? Feed the rabbit?

"There's enough for both of you."

WangJi offered some herbs first to Little Rabbit and then to the black rabbit when he came hopping over.

Nerdanel is statue still, apart from her smile.

"Ah, they're not fighting over the food! A good sign."

It was true. The rabbits were eating within a few feet of each other and they weren't getting possessive or upset.

"Very good."

Even better when Little Rabbit finished his snack first and came over to take a piece from the black rabbit and the black rabbit clearly didn't seem to care.

"Very good," he said, this time to the rabbits.

Nerdanel brightens when he does.

"Ah! That is a very good sign indeed." She agrees. "I think they will be very good friends, if they can already share food."

"Yes, I think they will be good friends."

He watched as they ate food only a few inches from each other without complaint.

"I will still keep them separated long term until I can be sure fighting is unlikely when unsupervised."

This was only a few hours after picking up the black rabbit and he was pleased it was going this well, but he didn't want to overwhelm Little Rabbit since the hutch was HIS home as far as he was concerned.
