Standard Car--Knitting

When Raven had ordered the knitting supplies, she'd been pleased with what she got. Except that now she had to transform the wrapped skeins of yarn into balls for easier use. So you might find her with the yarn skein wrapped around her hands, and a 'ball' being formed as it unwinds, suspended by dark energy. Or you might find her with the yarn already on her knitting needles, as she consults a pattern every now and then. Depending on how distracted she is, she might have to rip out a few rows and re-knit or not.

Greenhouse Car--Meditating

Raven meditates daily, sometimes while levitating, sometimes not. If she really isn't open to being disturbed, she does this in a quiet car. But when she's in the greenhouse car, she is open to being approached. Or maybe she just wants a change of scenery.

Chores--Around the Train

Purple team had cleaning duty for the chore roster this month, and Raven honestly preferred it to the other chores. Mostly because it was straightforward and not hard to do. She tries to wait until a passenger area is empty, but you might catch her with a broom, or a dust-cloth. Fortunately she has little trouble with reaching the high areas.

Some of that does sound like it's reasonable. Familiar, even. "I was always a rubbish knitter," Soldat admits with half a smile. "I don't remember it, exactly. But I know it's true. Better at mending and altering."

"I was only just barely okay at it," Soldat allows, patient with the yarn. It's kind of like origami, but a lot easier. And with a little more choice in regards to where to put the string to best keep the ball round. "But I got a lot of practice in Beacon, because no one else knew how. I'm pretty good, now."

"Yeah. Somebody had to teach me that. I didn't know anything about making food." Hell, they'd barely known how to eat food, let alone how to create it. "First thing I made was grilled cheese. I was so confused by the name. Couldn't figure out how to actually grill cheese."

Their smile grows. "Well, now I know what to make you next time you stop by the kitchen. Any particular kind you like best?"

"So clearly I've gotta experiment," Soldat says cheerfully enough. "Chocolate chip. Peanut butter. Cinnamon. Get some fancy toppings." It'd be fun to see what all one can bake into waffles. And also to eat the results, themselves.

"I haven't really ton a lot of experimenting," they admit after a beat, maybe a little shyly. "Not more than trying to vary things that go in a grilled cheese or an omelet or soup. Everything I make has come from a recipe without many variations."

"Next time I got batter and ingredients," they promise, amused. They pause to tilt the yarn ball around to make sure it's evenly spread, then goes back to looping yarn around. "And enough time to play around in the morning. Unless you like breakfast for dinner?"

It's soothing. And it's soothing to make sure they're doing it right, too. Soldat needs to collect as many soothing things as possible, to keep their brain from chewing on itself. "You know, you're right. How could I possibly have thought otherwise." This is a joke, they are definitely being silly here. "Tomorrow, then. I am making waffles for dinner and everyone can come and be amazed. Or weirded out. Whichever."

Sometimes Steve forgets to walk less than quietly. In the middle of a war, he learned how to be exceptionally sneaky. In the year and some change since he woke up in the modern world, SHIELD has retaught him how to do that. So it might be that neither Bucky nor Raven hear him approaching.

At any rate, when he speaks, it might seem like out of nowhere. "You learned how to make waffles?"
worthallthis: (look up)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2021-02-23 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's not quite out of nowhere. Soldat is hypervigilent, bordering on paranoid, about knowing where all potential threats are. Even when outwardly relaxed, even when relatively comfortable, they're always listening. And that's a familiar steady heartbeat they register approaching two whole seconds before Steve speaks.

So, luckily, there is no knife outbreak, just a little twitch, and then a warm little smile lofted Steve's way over the backs of the train car seats. Sarge does his usual (Oh god Steve.) in the back of their head, which they pointedly ignore. "I learned how to make a lot of things, Steve. Lasagna. Omelets. Pot roast. And waffles. Raven. This is Steve Rogers."

"Waffles and omelets sound great." He flashes a smirky, unrepentant grin down at Bucky, one very reminiscent of alleys in Brooklyn, hot summer nights and the stench of fish. Or garbage, depending on the day. Then the other supersoldier's attention shifts to Raven and he shuffles forward to extend a hand.

"I am." Not 'if he lets me' or 'I used to be'. They are always going to be friends, as far as Steve is concerned, even if it ends up one-sided and Bucky never speaks to him again. "And it's Steve."

"This asshole knew the me before was even. Me," Soldat says, but they sound fond rather than annoyed. It's less an insult than an endearment.

They also don't seem disturbed by the idea of being a different (not-)person before HYDRA, even if Steve might not like it much.

"Definitely don't call him mister anything," they add. "Give him a big head."

Ah, yes. The yarn. He realizes his mistake fairly quickly, opting for shaking one of her fingers with a rueful look on his face. "Yeah, no chance of being a fathead around this guy," Steve chimes in before settling into a seat on Bucky's right side - far enough away to hopefully not be a pain, but also close enough to talk.

"What's Zetta?"

Frankly, Soldat is trying to be as well-behaved and Bucky-like as possible around Steve. They badly want him to like them. Which means minimal twitching and lots of joking and their best smiles. It seems to be going pretty well, to their own surprise.

"One of your friends from back home?" they guess of Raven, still obediently winding yarn. At least they're probably almost done, by this point.
