Tickets Please

"Good Morning Passengers, today is day twenty five of the month of Bassoon." Waking up in their beds as always to the announcement passengers will feel a little strange. The hairs on the back of their necks are standing up. If they have any kind of danger sense it is going haywire. They have a moment before a second announcement shines some light on the strange feeling.

"Attention passengers, we have been boarded by inspectors. Please may all passengers have tickets and passes ready for inspection. Please try and stay calm." Calm may be harder for some than others. The feeling can be rationalised, it is similar to the air of expectation at the start of a horror film, or a scary ride. However rationalisation might not last that long as when characters try to leave their cabins they will find the doors are locked. They are trapped.

If anyone has lingered in the gaps between carriages for any length of time they will have no doubt heard the strange sound that can be heard sometimes, almost like faint choral singing. Now it can be heard in the carriages itself. Still faint, but if they are quiet they can hear it in the distance. Almost a cross between singing and crying. Sometimes loud, sometimes barely a murmur but ever present.

The feeling of danger intensifies, heavy footsteps sound outside in the corridors and a heavy breathing, as if coming from a mask. The footsteps move towards the first cabin of the first sleeper carriage and the door slides open...

Mako has stayed back while May talks, figuring that if they're giving a story it's better for just one person to do so, but now that she's being interrogated about unrelated matters he also steps forward, offering his own ticket.

"You also need to look at mine, right?"

"We do." They nodded at him and took the ticket silently, slotting it into their amour and scanning him with the same faint green light.

"Mako Tsunami. Forty four years of age. Correct cabin. Began service ten void days ago. Time in void has been ten days. Is this information correct?"

Mako nods. "Yes, it is." Seems like this cabin is all new arrivals.

A nod met his words. "And do you know the whereabouts of the final inhabitant of this cabin?" They removed the ticket and handed it back to him as they asked.

He shakes his head. "Sorry, but I don't. She's old enough not to have someone tracking her every move, and I don't have that authority over her anyways."

"How did she leave the cabin?" They continued, watching him as he spoke. "It should not have been possible."

"I'm not sure," he says with a slight shrug. He's not used to outright lying, but it is true that he's not sure of the exact nature of her powers. "I wasn't paying particular attention to her."

"Very well." There was a silence as he stepped back away from Mako and waited silently by the door. A moment later he looked across at them both. "She has been found."

"...I see. She won't be in trouble for this, will she?" Mako is calm when asking, but beneath his skin his muscles are already tensed up.

Another silence before the inspector shook their head. "No. It seems she was overwhelmed."

They nodded at Mako. "She will be returned here."

"I can certainly see why that'd be," he says, a tiny bit of sarcasm slipping into his voice. Still, when Raven is returned and nothing particularly bad is shown to happen, he does relax a bit more.

"How often do inspections like this happen?" he asks. "I'm sure all of us would prefer to be more prepared for whenever the next one is."

"We do not announce inspections in advance." They told him with a shake of their head. "We find more when we are not expected."
freakyfishdad: (disbelief)

[personal profile] freakyfishdad 2019-11-26 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"...I see." He does. Much as he doesn't like it, it makes a lot of sense. "Would you mind telling me when your last few inspections were, then, relative to this one?"
voidtreckernpcs: (Inspector)

"That information is classified." One of them spoke immediately. Their voice was still steady and without emotion, but the answer was hasty.

There was a silence and then the other spoke. "Most void transports are inspected every five years."

Huh, so they do actually have different personalities. Mako nods at the one that actually volunteered the information. "Thank you. That's pretty much the kind of thing I wanted to know."

"Our inspection is almost complete. We ask that you remain in your cabins until it is concluded." They nodded at him again and moved to the door.

"Thank you for your cooperation."
