[Closed] Birthday Shenanigans
Who: Jin Ling & Lan Sizhui
Where: Standard Coach
When: Backdated to Day Five of the Month of Poi
What: Birthday Shenanigans with Sizhui
Warnings: Just a lot of cute stuff. Will update if there are other cw.
[ Today, was a special day. Oddly enough, Jin Ling remembered it, after heavily staring at a calendar of some kind on the way out. He wasn't very good with festivities, much to his displeasure. Birthdays are rather strange and confusing. He was always spoiled on his birthday and he never expected to honestly do anything for anyone else.
However, it seemed to be oddly changing, since after his uncle's birthday, Jin Ling felt a bit sentimental with the gesture itself. He had always wished Jiang Cheng a good birthday but never had done anything such as giving him a gift. At least, his skills with the good luck charms had gotten better. He'd probably make a mountain of them for his uncle when his birthday came around. Sizhui also helped him a lot among other things, and he supposed he could just say it was a way to show gratitude.
With Fairy in toll, he made his way to the Standard Coach. It may have seemed really out of character of him these days, but Jin Ling had gone through so much to not change his behavior. Hakagemachi really did do a number on him. He could hear the wolf snickering at his cheesy creations. The okami even knew who it was for and how Jin Ling stayed up all night to get them to look perfect. They were in a small cardstock container that Jin Ling surprisingly made himself, with some advice from the wolf. The container itself was a soft hue of blue, reminding Jin Ling of Gusu Lan's color. Of course, that's why he chose the color in the first place. It was simple cardstock box, and inside were various colored rabbits he had made.
The okami was well versed in a lot of Japanese Culture, given its origin, thus Jin Ling the papercraft called origami from him. It was weird, that the okami continued to give him so much knowledge and let him be these days. Their lives were peaceful and he didn't seem to find it all that troublesome anymore. Fairy was also happily trailing behind him, snacking on a piece of fruit he managed to find for his spiritual dog. Eventually, his thoughts were interrupted when he beelined for the Standard Coach. Well, it was almost the right time. It didn't matter if he was early. He walked inside anyway. ]

right now, he's called for a break, taken some few odd cookies, a couple of cupcakes and xixue along, and disappeared into the standard car. not many people occupy this area all at once, so it's a nice, usually quiet area to go sit down at one of the tables where they can enjoy the fruits of their labor.
or that's exactly what the six-tailed fox is doing whenever jin ling comes into the carriage, anyway. she's perched atop the table, frantically licking away all the icing on her cupcake, making certain it's almost cleaned before munching the mini-cake. (for real though, it's a wonder she doesn't devour the wrapper too—) sizhui, on the other hand, has his attention downcasted, reading from the book resting across his lap when he maybe ought to be teaching his spirit beast some better manners. in his defense, she's keeping herself contained, isn't making a huge mess, and quite likely got up there because she couldn't reach in the first place! so, as long as she's not causing anyone else trouble, he has no qualms letting xixue savor her treat.
also, taking into account it's only them around, he imagines it'd be difficult for no one to get angry.
approaching footsteps don't evade sizhui long, either. he peeks upward following that noise, glancing toward xixue initially, but redirecting to jin ling and fairy after he's realized.] Hello, Jin Ling! [then sizhui raises his hand that's holding a chocolate fudge cookie, smiles faintly and offers it to the other boy.] Have one, please, there are so many... [because he might've miscalculated how much batter these recipes make? yet also definitely because jin ling's someone who deserves it, especially if what he's holding is a gift; an assumption he shouldn't make, but it does just so happen to be his birthday . . .
thank goodness, fairy's already got some fruit at the moment, or else he'd feel awful for not having another animal-safe cupcake on hand. while he's not being presumptuous, this doesn't keep him from being curious, however.] What's in the box, hm?

Jin Ling could only roll his eyes at that thought. Of course, knowing Sizhui's birthday was a huge coincidence. Jin Ling had happened across the calendar in the living room when he was living with Wei Wuxian, and he recalled the date marked with some noticeable notes. He had good memory, thus the gesture he was getting at this time was out of his appreciation for the help and also due to him having no other way to really thank someone properly. Saying thank you was still a learning experience for him and he had made some progress. It wasn't the best progress, but he was trying.
Having Sizhui and Jingyi to be around, he felt like he could be himself a bit more and spend time with the people he was closer to age with. Though, he thought maybe Jingyi might be older than he appeared. He was a dragon after all! Of course, he was noticed by Sizhui as he was lost in his own thoughts. He stiffened at the call of his name, but approached the other and his companion. Giving Xixue a once over and patting her head gently, Jin Ling made a nodding gesture to acknowledge Sizhui's sudden greeting. Fairy, jumped right on Sizhui as the spiritual companion saw the familiar face. Fairy remembered when Sizhui was giving it so many pats and pets. It looks like Fairy was excited for more pets and maybe a bit more affection for his birthday. (Did spiritual companions even know that?) Also, yes, Fairy dove at Sizhui with the piece of juicy fruit in its mouth. He might get hit with droplets of the fruit.
Regardless, Jin Ling raised a brow at the desserts spread out along with the chocolate fudge cookie that was held out to him. His sensitive sense of smell picked up the strange aroma almost instantly. ]
Wh-What is that supposed to be? It smells-- nutty.
[ For the lack of better words since there were a lot of things he had not seen when he was in Hakagemachi. Something like sweets that were this delicious smelling, were uncommon. With a bit of hesitance, he took the cookie with his free hand and mumbling a low 'thanks,' before biting into the cookie and chewing it curiously. It had a strange texture. It was sweet, but there was a hint of bitterness. It seemed like the okami knew what it was and probably enjoying it. Jin Ling's eyes lit a bit at the strange taste of the cookie but it was-- good. Something, he'd probably never expected to taste. ]
It's sw-sweet-- and kind of bitter. You said it was-- a chocolate fudge cookie...?
[ So much for an answer because that clearly could wait. Jin Ling then remembered the small little cardstock box he made with the materials he found. He almost hid it behind his back, but stopped himself. Clearly, it was for Sizhui! Why did he have to put Jin Ling on the spot like that! His face sort of contorts briefly, before he replied back to the question-- low tone and all. ]
I'm not telling. [ He's waiting for Fairy to do its thing before he pushes the box into Sizhui's hands. (Whenever that is). For now, he just got Jin Ling looking the other way, making a face at the question still. ]

jin ling's likely going to think his thank you isn't too great or that it's missing something, but he'll be wrong. while not a proper ‘thanks’ in some sense, the lan disciple can still understand and appreciate the sentiment, even more-so since jin ling has given him an actual sincere gift for his birthday. (just imagine how he'll light up as soon as he opens the box to reveal what's inside!)
also, assuming jingyi's older than he looks is fine because it's technically true; all three of them are different ages, oddly enough, yet sizhui's chalked it up to train shenanigans and being plucked from different timelines, taking into account he's a simple cultivator, lan jingyi's dragon-souled, and jin ling's possessed by an okami demon. speaking of the latter though, sizhui doesn't let that tensed posture go unnoticed, even if he's not calling it outright or making his momentary staring blatant, attention diverting back toward xixue after jin ling comes closer. the tiny fox pokémon wastes no time leaning into those pats and, although he instinctively lifts the cookie high enough that it's away from fairy, he lets the dog leap right up onto him, chuckling.]
And hello to Fairy too! [sure, there's fruit juice splattered across his hoodie now, but it's no big deal to him whenever the sweater can be washed. whether fairy knows what today is, he uses his free hand to affectionately rub the dog's ears, waiting for jin ling to accept the cookie so he can eventually use that hand for petting as well.]
Uh-huhhh, [sizhui drawls.] You're welcome. [and that's all he offers, hand lowering after jin ling's accepted the cookie, his fingertips resting momentarily on fairy's nose while he watches him try it. seeing his eyes light up like that should be enough, but lan sizhui's gaze lingers until jin ling speaks, which prompts him to nod in response. he would've also spoken something had jin ling not segued back to the box he'd mentioned earlier. lucky for jin ling, he decides thrusting this gift upon sizhui's a better idea than hiding it, since it's possible sizhui might have embarrassed him further by asking what he'd done that for.
instead, he's now clutching the box between both hands, eyeing it thoughtfully, giving the slightest shake, gently tilting it halfway on its side. sorry, fairy, he'll get back to pets at some point, but.] Okay.
[if jin ling won't tell, it will get opened then, and that's exactly what he starts doing once fairy's head is comfortably settled on his knees. he's humming throughout unpackaging this present, though everything goes quiet all of a sudden once it's revealed what's inside and he's realized what they are, despite some few misshapen parts.] Rabbits? [and ever-so-slowly he reaches to lift one, upturning his hand so it sits flat in his palm, expression beaming.] Aw, they're so cute...!

Oh he definitely does! He doesn’t think it’s all that great but he was proud of them enough to give to Sizhui.
That meant they were acceptable to his standards. Sometimes Jin Ling could be such a perfectionist about small details. Jin Ling wasn’t sure how Sizhui would react to his gift, but he could only hope it wasn’t anything too bad. Sizhui was nice and friendly. For whatever reason, he made it easier for Jin Ling to converse rather than argue. (Though regular banters are fun too.)
Fairy was having the time of her life, enjoying the dog eared rubs. There were happy barks for Sizhui with her fruit splattered face. She even manages to give him a lick or two for affection. Yes, such an invasive spiritual dog, but Sizhui had no one else to blame but himself for giving her too much attention his time. Even Jin Ling had to make a face at how affectionate she seemed, though made no move to stop the dog from giving his companion doggie licks and all. Back to the conversation, Jin Ling had finished his cookie and it was probably one of the best sweets he’s tried in a long time. It wasn’t too bad and he honestly could eat another ]
Fairy, if you keep doing that he’ll fall over! [ He lightly scolded his friendly companion. He didn’t want to be blamed, if Sizhui ended up with some injuries. Of course, since Sizhui was the only one here with so many sweets, he figured he might as the obvious question too. ]
Did—you make them or something?
[ It was out of curiosity. Jin Ling couldn’t say he was good at the cooking category. He was able to pass barely on days. Others, he rather not talk about. Something, he’d probably have to get used to. Though, he understood that baking was different from cooking. He played with Xixue for a moment after he let go to eat that cookie and balance the box that was eventually pushed into Sizhui’s hand. Jin Ling looked the other way, feeling quite awkward. Not because he had an issue with giving or making the gift. Rather, it was something out of the usual for him and he still struggled with what sort of expressions he should be making. Jin Ling obviously couldn’t say much! He just kept side eying Sizhui as he watched the other reach to the box and opened it. ]
They’re… paper rabbits….
[ He looked a little flustered still. ]
Of course they are! I made sure they were—
[ Okay, no time to really throw a tantrum. ] Anyway! Happy…Birthday..
[ mutter, mutter, mumble. ]

how could jin ling think he'd react poorly to receiving adorable little origami rabbits? sure, nervousness was understandable, but jin ling put in the effort, work and (possibly) a lot of time into making these and he's appreciating them wholeheartedly.
despite fairy being overzealous, he seems unbothered, too focused on eyeing the tiny paper bunny sitting in his hand. she gets away with licking his wrist, the hand that's holding the box cinching somewhat tighter on the edge so it doesn't get upturned. if there's a chance where fairy's becoming too restless, he shifts his arm, though ultimately figures it'd be easier to set the container down instead, which he does after carefully moving xixue's half-eaten cupcake aside. the fox makes an almost saddened-sounding noise but shuffles along the table anyway, sitting nearer to jin ling's arm in case he'd like to offer more pets for her suffering. cookie-wise, there are plenty if jin ling would like another, even though that'd mean heading back to the kitchen for others.
sizhui giggles, soft and airy, moves his newly freed hand then rubs fairy's ears again, making certain the overly friendly spirit beast stays occupied.] It's okay, I just don't want any of them to get crushed. [forget him getting injured, he's worried about tiny bunny casualties before he has a chance to get them to his room; every single one is important and he'll treat them like so. he nods at the question,] I did. Them, the cupcake Xixue's eating and other types of treats left behind in the kitchen for now.
[look, if jin ling wants to strengthen his cooking skills, he's got a friend right here that'll have no problem helping him out whenever he may want to try. practices makes perfect has been sizhui's approach to it and it's worked well, both cooking and baking. this even offers a chance to explain how the latter is extra precise compared to the former, something individuals are better at, whereas cooking offers a little more freedom with ingredients.]
As I thought. [not that he doubted, he simply likes having verification and offering reassurance, regardless of how adorably agitated jin ling is.] They are perfect, Jin Ling.
[see, this is ordinarily where he'd maybe reach out for jin ling's arm, tug him closer and give him a hug outright, yet part of him hesitates, uncertain where exactly their friendship falls at this point. (are hugs allowed? does he have to earn extra friendship points??? what are the rules in this situation?!)
either way, he's smiling with exuberance, hoping his eyes aren't as watery as they feel when he shakily adds on,] Th-thank you... so much.

He isn’t sure at times but he’s quite confident that Sizhui might appreciate them enough. He knows the other well enough to not assume the worse from Sizhui. Jin Ling won’t boast about the amount of times it took for him to perfect this skill. However, he’s pretty sure the okami will spill the beans if he’s asked. Luckily for Jin Ling, the okami actually feels less obligated to ruin his image right now.
Fairy seems to find the place on his lap comfortable so, she just keeps lying there after all the licking and nuzzling. Jin Ling also just can’t seem to reprimand her any more than he already has. He adores his spiritual companion, thus his call outs have no ground. Jin Ling can’t believe that Xixue is doing this, but at the same time, he suppose he did he leave an impression on her the last time. He carried her all over the carriage when Sizhui was showing him around while ha asked questions about the carriages and such. He does end up patting her a few times to ease her mood. Sizhui needs that part of the table to continue his little investigation into his box full of origami rabbits. There are various different colors of them for Sizhui’s viewing pleasure. Jin Ling isn’t sure about grabbing a cookie just yet, but that might be a thought held in the back of his mind later. ]
I—I can just make more if they get crushed or something.
[ He’s half mumbling still but it is audible enough. Regarding the cooking and baking aspect, maybe that’s something he’ll consider when he knows better. At the moment, he probably won’t even bring it up. It’s a good thought though. ]
That’s—impressive. [ That’s all he can say because what can he say? The cookie was good. ]
They could—be better. As long as you like them, I guess it doesn’t matter. There’s other colors, and some bigger and smaller ones.
[ Some look a little bent out of shape but most of them look quite perfect. At least, Jin Ling thinks it’s perfect. Jin Ling may be a bit surprised if he gets hugged out of nowhere, but he at least will not opt to fight it completely because it’s Sizhui’s birthday. He can at least hold his tongue for that long, right? The tee isn’t even sure how long he can hold his cool before pushing his friend off. Affection is something that he’s quite weird about. He can hug maybe his uncles without saying much, but others, they are a lot different. He can see the smile on Sizhui's face and all he can do is look away in embarrassment. ]
I-It’s nothing… just – I don’t know what you’ll do with them but—that’s the best I got.

they're perfect to sizhui, someone who's (surprisingly) never tried making origami rabbits of all things; they look somewhat complicated, after considering the lines and creases that form the animal, and it makes sense why he hadn't before. now though, he sorta wants to give them a go, despite knowing it'd take him some time and dedication to learn, yet he'd surely figure it out with jin ling by his side for pointers.
indeed, it's quite fortunate the okami stays quiet about it or else sizhui very well might've remarked about how people shouldn't be made fun of for trying their hardest at something. (again, this goes hand-in-hand with before, no exceptions— wolf demons included!)
such a good spiritual companion, staying put while the lan disciple peers into his box of bunnies, wide eyes glossing over all the colors, blinking here and there in an attempt to keep his tears stifled. silly as it may seem, each one will be cherished, set on display in his and dennis's room wherever he's allowed. whichever ones have to stay boxed up, he'll keep somewhere safe, take small handfuls from it when damaged rabbits need replacing. just like jin ling says, more can always be made after those go, so on, so forth— but no worries there right now, just admiration for his gifts. xixue, being well-versed in the art of getting what she wants, knows jin ling will provide some offhanded affection after spending hours hauling her around the train during his introduction. pshaw toward petting at this point, yes? he already showed too much dedication before, xixue's learned the game, will play until she's appeased, then go back for her cupcake.]
True, but I still want to keep as many of these as possible, you know?
[sizhui's hand moves, gently sets the red rabbit into the box, fingers scooping up two more which are blue and green, his attention focused on them, trying to nevermind the faint blush coming across his face at jin ling's ‘impressive’ compliment. he didn't think they were anything spectacular but hey, he'll welcome praise without second-guessing.] Thank you, [he accepts, plainly offering for explanation,] I've had some practice.
[he resists shaking his head or arguing, instead mentioning,] There was a lot of effort put into these and that's what matters. I appreciate them because you considered me on my birthday, took time out of your day to make them, then even delivered the box in person.
[‘you're a terrific friend, jin ling,’ is what he'd like to say, but considering jin ling's already embarrassed, sizhui bites his tongue, smiles, twists his wrist and lets those bunnies – one big and one small – settle beside each other.] Do you want to know what I'll do with them? [even if it will probably fluster jin ling worse, it'd still be worth it for the possible satisfaction he'll get too.]
no subject
If Sizhui asks, Jin Ling will be more than happy to show him how to make the rabbits. The logic behind them are simple once a person get a hang of where the folds go and all that. Jin Ling is more than happy to share any skills he has. After all, learning is one thing, but he seems to have a knack for showing and teaching others how to do things. Even the okami found Jin Ling’s determination endearing. So much, that he may have a little more respect for his human vessel. Of course, that doesn’t mean they are friends. Jin Ling certainly hasn’t accepted him as any more than an ally that needs him alive because he needs Jin Ling’s body to exist.
Fairy just enjoys the little attention she is getting while keeping her head on his lap. She’s quite happy that she gets love from anyone. After all, she’s a cheerful soul who always gets more than enough affection from her master. Sometimes, she just wants to be a little silly. Sizhui just happens to be that person that she has found fondness towards after many other people on the train. Too bad, Wei Wuxian isn’t fond of her still, so Fairy is still trying on that record. Jin Ling finds the whole situation a bit embarrassing beyond his expectations. He honestly was expecting something similar in terms of reaction from Sizhui but at the same time it’s also surprising how touched he seems right now with the box full of origami rabbits that Jin Ling spent a few days making.
Xixiue is such a rascal sometimes! She really does make Jin Ling a sucker for her cuteness He definitely finds a lot of interest in her unique appearance and her small cute expressions. He gives her enough pets before she goes back to her cupcake and he focuses back on their current conversation. ]
If that’s—what you want.
[ He mused lightly. There’s probably more if he can spend time making additional ones. After all, he pushes himself to be good at all the forms of creativity. It’s part of the criteria that he’s grown up with. The education and everything. Learning how to make origami rabbits are just part of the process—right? He just nods to the thank you from the other. Of course, he’s had practice. If he didn’t, Jin Ling might have thrown up the cookie if he tasted awful, even though he’s learned to adjust with whatever meals he can get.(Thank you again—Hakagemachi, for ruining him.) ]
It-It’s really not that big of a deal! I just remembered because I saw it one of those Calendars somewhere—back in that--- place.
[ Jin Ling doesn’t even know what else to day. Maybe he is being way more sentimental than his old self, but screw it. It’s not like he can’t change his habits right? He’s gone through things and Sizhui isn’t wrong. He did think of his friend and he did make the rabbits and box with his friend in mind. How many more birthdays of others will he do the same, he wonders? Jin Ling will be a sputtering mess if Sizhui says any more than that. He’s quite content with the praise and his nose is already as high as it can be. Anymore, and he might really die of both embarrassment and a big head! ]
N-No, what are you going to do with them?
no subject
don't worry, at some point, he'll ask for help with learning and they will probably spend who knows how long on making a bunch more of these cute little bunnies. in exchange, he could teach jin ling the things he knows: frogs, butterflies, birds, turtles and lotus flowers, then the okami can marvel at the new origami jin ling's able to dedicate himself to.
poor fairy, she's gonna struggle a whole lot trying to get wei wuxian to like her! but it's alright, sizhui has lots of love to give and he doesn't mind sharing it with her whatsoever; he loves animals, after all, and never hesitates when giving them affection, particularly because he knows so few that aren't also human-shaped any other day. xixue and fairy are special spirit beasts who deserve a little spoiling every now and then, who better to give it to them than someone with one of the biggest hearts ever? jin ling will either just suffer from the embarrassment or get over it eventually, seeing as sizhui's not relenting anytime soon.
sometimes, huh? she's rascally most of the time, though knows when she needs to mind and shape up before getting scolded. as it stands right now, she got some pets, nuzzled jin ling's hand in kind then decided it was the perfect moment to get back to munching, even if she's not too far away.]
It is, [he concedes, a mirthful smirk curving his mouth.] Perhaps I'll even name all of them. [or he won't and is simply teasing jin ling. (he'll name every one by color, watch, and replace them as the rabbits start deteriorating.) artwork is important throughout their studies, no doubt, although it seems likely that paper rabbits won't be necessary for cultivation reasons. cooking though, that's significant for survival, and knowing more things about it could very well save someone's life, whether from starvation or poisoning; knowing what's edible and what isn't is also important when gathering ingredients. jin ling should've been around to try the coconut curry pumpkin soup he'd made because, while it was barely spicy, it'd still turned out well, had been taste-tested and approved by zewu-jun himself! can't really beat that praise in his opinion.
following an eye-roll, he smiles.] Maybe not for you, but it is for me! The fact you even remembered...
[well, it's touching in a way sizhui can't explain, but he knows it makes him tear up again just thinking about it. he sniffles softly, raises his hand from fairy's head and dabs at his eyes, hoping that he's not crying yet if he is, perhaps he can clear the tears before they're noticeable. however many birthdays jin ling would like to celebrate, sizhui'd gladly join him if it'd be alright. with two people, they'd get more done and there's nothing saying they couldn't plan their own separate gifts for whoever the party was for. jin ling better not die or else there'll be some serious consequences after he returns, since death has been proven to not be permanent aboard the voidtrecker express.]
I'm going to take the box and put a few of each color around my room. Then, whatever is left, I'll tuck away and save for when I need them.
no subject
Jin Ling will definitely take the reign in assisting Sizhui with that in the future. Of course, he has to be himself and not openly offer that. (Even though, he’s quite aware that Sizhui really liked those handmade paper rabbits.) Jin Ling is pretty proud of himself for those, still. He won’t brag about it, though.
Any form of paper art will intrigue Jin Ling, as he learned they’re quite fun to do. They’re also relaxing when he knows what he’s doing. It’s a nice get away from practicing his swords and skills all day. He knows he has to keep up with it, lest, he gets more scolding from Jiang Cheng. Not that he minds those either. He appreciates the discipline. It gets him back in shape. She will keep trying until Wei Wuxian tolerates her! She’s determined! Though, the happy go lucky spiritual dog is quite happy where she is with Sizhui and others that she’s won hearts of.
He know he’s not going to get away from the friendship. It’s been established and at some point will be ingrained. He didn’t hate Sizhui either, thus friendship was fine with him. (He’ll never admit though.) He’s too busy being an embarrassed adolescent over silly things.
Xixue definitely wins in the category of being the one existence that immediately won Jin Ling’s heart. Minus Fairy of course! Fairy will always be his favorite for various reasons. She has her own colors and is her own unique self. ]
--Wh-why would you name them all? Isn’t that too much?
[ Why would he even say that?! Now he’s really ready to run away. Name them? Really? C’mon! Don’t do that Sizhui!! Cooking seems essential from his experience, so he definitely an agree with that. The curry sounds amazing and id he knew, he might have attempted to get some. However, it is unfortunate that he wasn’t around at that time. Though, he’d definitely give it a try in the future. Good food is good food. ]
…That’s—that’s because it was on the calendar in that apartment… I just—happened to see it! That’s all.
[ He wants to brag about remembering it so well, but he can’t—not with the amount of embarrassing things that his friend is saying. It might actually back fire on him. ]
You—isn’t that a bit too much?
[ Hear the frown in his voice Sizhui?! ]
no subject
sizhui wouldn't expect jin ling to ask outright when it comes to these things, it's why he'll do it himself, waiting for the perfect moment to surprise him with brightly-colored paper and the promise of fun handicrafts. they will both enjoy themselves, regardless, although in sizhui's opinion, there's nothing wrong with taking pride in their work.
just because they aren't back home, that doesn't mean he isn't still following his own strictly set schedule. up real early, combative practice in the gym, meditate, chores, et cetera and so forth until bedtime, then wash, rinse, repeat with missions in-between. if jin ling needs some motivation, he could come rouse him for practice, they'll do it together, go their separate ways afterward and jin ling's got no need to worry about jiang cheng berating him for slacking off. wei wuxian, however, may be a lost cause in this dog expedition— which is not a bad thing, people have fears and those fears should be respected. it's just unfortunate fairy possibly won't experience any affection from either of the wei wuxians. again, she will not be lacking, there'll be plenty others who shall provide wherever she needs and if those aren't enough? jin ling's always here for attention.
embarrassment and adorable companions aside momentarily, he focuses on jin ling's comment, thoughtfully narrows his eyes then lets the slightest amused smirk quirk his lips at the edges.]
Because I want to, of course, and it won't be if I name them all by color!
[this way, each color (red, yellow, blue or whatever else) all have one single name, which makes it even easier to replace them when the time ultimately comes. simple as that, really! also: he cannot be stopped once he's gotten started and jin ling brought it upon himself by giving him such a sweet gift.] You needn't explain yourself to me, Jin Ling, it's fine. [he simply appreciates someone thinking of him.
oh, sizhui hears it alright, but is he deterred? mmm, no, not exactly, probably much to jin ling's dismay. they've already flustered him this much, a little more shouldn't be too awful.] They will be a nice touch to the cabin.

It was definitely thanks to Sizhui and Jingyi, along with his jiujiu and the Wei Wuxian he knows. Of course, there's still a lot of room for growth, so he isn't expecting things t go that smoothly.
Jin Ling found the right (or wrong) times to be proud of the things he does. Sometimes, it can come off a bit too arrogant for most people's taste. Though, he can't really change himself too much. He's still one to be a little arrogant from time to time. At least, he's being a little more humble about certain things. Jin Ling will and probably have been going to Sizhui for getting in the habit. He can't slack off of course! He has to be in his best shape so that he doesn't get criticized for it. It's still some adjustment since, he's not used to having another power source in his body. Especially, one running with demon energy.
On Day! Fairy will win this battle. In the meantime, she's going to try her hardest to suck up to the people she already knows likes her. She's a pristine spiritual dog after all! ]
That is too much! You really don't need to name them all by color!
[ That will probably make him not forget that he made the rabbits. Especially if Sizhui reads off their names when they talk about his gift!! ]
I wasn't-- explaining anything.
[ He huffs a little at the statement but doesn't protest beyond that. He just seems a little more defensive. Sizhui definitely is taking the offensive quite well. ]

not everything has to go smoothly, either. there will come times where emotions are running high and wild, where they will react on impulse rather than thinking with their heads, something normal during the moment— but then it's also up to them to fix things afterward when all is said and done.
here's a question he'd ask: is it wrong for him to be used to jin ling and arrogance going hand-in-hand? not that he's calling him ‘arrogant,’ he is simply well-aware of jin clan's hubristic mannerisms and jin ling isn't an exception. even though he's different from the jin ling he knows back home, some similarities are present, this happens to be one of them. still, it's another moment where jin ling's allowed, given his hardships, and sizhui's not-so-easily put off by a little smugness. from what he's experienced today so far, those paper rabbits the other boy made are items he can one-hundred-percent gloat about. perhaps sometime, once they've figured out a proper training schedule, lan sizhui could test all of jin ling's endurance against his own, see how long he can last with the added demon help, then try to wear that okami down one day.
slow and steady would win the race in wei wuxian's case; don't rush it, let him approach fairy as he's able, then take it at his own pace. hopefully, he can get mostly past his fear to at least realize she's a good dog.]
But why not? I think it would be cute to name them...
[he has the decency to look sheepish following that comment, his head dipping, both hands moving to gently circle fairy's ears and rub like he needs a distraction. like he's not being terrible and kinda-sorta putting jin ling on the spot! sizhui does upturn, blinking thoughtfully before averting his gaze to the box of bunnies again.] Then I'm sorry for assuming. [not his originally intended ‘if you say so,’ but it'll do.
and gosh, yes, he has been handling jin ling's guarded attitude pretty well! maybe it has something to do with him being extra forgiving on his birthday. (it doesn't whatsoever, he just knows jin ling's flustered and isn't keen on irking him too much.)]

After all, it’s the other’s birthday, so he might as well try as hard as he can to hold onto his frustrations before losing it all together. At least, so far, he’s doing a decent job. He hasn’t shouted at Sizhui too much, other than protesting him about naming these paper rabbits. He still can’t believe that Sizhui is working to do that. It’s already going to be something he’ll never forget at this point.
He knows that there will always moments where there will be conflict, and he doesn’t know how to fully approach them at the moment, but he’ll keep trying his best. That’s all he can do. He is him after all. He doesn’t need anyone else to validate that. There’s no point in getting upset over the smallest things. (He says this, but he’s throwing a fit over here about naming a few paper rabbits. Imagine if they are the real things!
Not at all. Jin Ling likes to be the way he is, and it’s something he’s quite used to. A habit he will probably never break and something he’ll have to learn to get better at. He still doesn’t get why Sizhui or even Jingyi bother hanging out with him. Zizhen too. He doesn’t get it. He wants them to tell him why, but at the same time, it’s putting him out there and he doesn’t want to do that either. Best, to keep it behind lock and key for now. Jin Ling is willing to train as hard as he can with Sizhui if the other allows it. He needs something to wear himself down sometimes. All that energy has to go somewhere. The same for the wolf. Perhaps, that will put the damn demon to sleep sometimes, so Jin Ling can have some peace of mind. It’s a temporary solution, but worth the try and effort.
One day, she will definitely make it happen, but now is not that time. Fairy will try slowly. ]
Do you think everything is cute or something--? Isn’t it—embarrassing to name so many of them?
[ C’mon Sizhui! Tell him that isn’t so! ]
…You—ugh never mind.
[ He’s about to spit out that Sizhui doesn’t have to apologize, but he will end up in square one again and Sizhui might win yet another conversation with him. Good thing he didn’t say that, or Jin Ling might really have argued more aggressively otherwise! Clearly, he is! Look at how relaxed he looked, while Jin Ling is losing his mind. ]
Fine just do whatever you want—they’re yours anyway….
[ huff ]

besides, they all need a little push now and then, right? jingyi always had his ways of convincing him, as did ouyang zizhen, and he can imagine there have been similar times where jin ling's encouraged his friends back home in the same ways. protestations toward naming his rabbits he can handle, no problem, it just encourages his mirthfulness, makes it more difficult to keep from smiling when he's trying wholeheartedly to be mindful of jin ling's emotions.
but it is his birthday and he really, truly does not understand why he shouldn't name them if he's feeling so inclined. (goodness, he can't even imagine what it'd be like with real rabbits, either!)
there's no reason they shouldn't be themselves all the time, save for a few particular moments; like maybe don't act super ridiculous in front of their elders? and even that's not too hard a slight shift in character for however briefly. sizhui will tell jin ling straightforwardly why he bothers if asked, he has no qualms admitting he finds joy in jin ling's company and sincerely thinks he's sweet underneath his tough, capricious demeanor. their other friends would have reasons too and, despite jin ling's apprehension, they likely wouldn't lie to him outright when it comes to friendship. training together is yet another way they can bond, testing each other's abilities, finding ways to help strengthen specific areas— but wearing down the wolf seems like it'd prove best for jin ling and that's who he prefers helping if there's a choice. aiding both may eventually prove beneficial, he's still somewhat wary whenever there are possible moments where jin ling might lose himself in every sense.
in the less worrisome sense though, just making the youkai sleep so jin ling's allowed to think straight is something helpful.]
Not everything, [he remarks, a few things instantly coming into his mind when he considers, but he shakes his head instead.] And no, I don't think so? [sorry to burst your bubble, jin ling, but he sees nothing wrong here.
his expression does faintly crease again after the other's ‘nevermind,’ a wrinkle in his brow and his lips pinched while he contemplates. obviously, jin ling was going to say something, but rather than focus on whatever's bothering him, sizhui redirects (for the most part),] They are, thank you, I appreciate them very much. [after making certain he hasn't lost any, sizhui's closing the box, taking it between his hands then moving so he's upright.] And if you have nothing else to do at the moment, I'd like to give you something in return.
[is jin ling ready for cookies? because he's going to get lots of them.]

Jin Ling is learning to trust others a little more and not always rely heavily on himself. Asking for help, is still a bit of a challenge. One that he has yet to conquer. Jin Ling finds their friendship oddly natural enough. He won’t admit to the friendship, but he acknowledges they are a little closer than acquaintances. Enough, so that he doesn’t doubt Sizhui all the time. Regardless, whatever the label is, Jin Ling has already submitted to it. He won’t openly say it though.
It truly is Sizhui’[s birthday and Jin Ling really need stop telling him no, because he’s going to do it, regardless of what Jin Ling wants. Either way, he does end up not mentioning it again and letting Sizhui do what he wants. He can’t stop the other anyway, so why argue more. He can’t wait this fight! At least, not at the moment. If Jin Ling somehow ends up with all those REAL rabbits for Sizhui, he really might turn into a ball of embarrassment! He probably will see those cute rabbits all day with all their various names per Sizhui!.
A little push for friendship is always nice. Sometimes, someone like Jin Ling needs that, especially with all those thorns he walks around with. One day, it will be an easy feat for this prickly teenager. He’s at least simmering down a bit lately with all those thorns of his. Especially, how he’s not antagonizing people at the moment. Though, yes it’s something he’s gotten used to—expressing himself honestly and truthfully. Perhaps, that honesty is a bit too abrasive at times, but what can he do? He doesn’t have a lot of experience in mannerisms. He obviously has not been taught how to truly. And properly behave. (Jiang Cheng’s discipline and Jing Guangyao’s spoilage doesn’t count!) ]
You say that, but I bet you’re thinking already about what to name them!
[ Yes that poor bubble popped completely. Clearly, he doesn’t see the bigger picture here! ]
Like I said—you don’t have to thank me. It’s just paper craft. Nothing too hard or—whatever. It’s fine. As long as you like them, I guess.
[ Obviously, Jin Ling is 100% aware that Sizhui likes them very much. ]
H-Huh? Why it’s your birthday. You don’t need to give me anything.
[ He has no idea what he will do with them but maybe he’s ready! Maybe! ]

many, many people could do with asking others for help, but it is easier said than done, without a doubt. sometimes, even sizhui has trouble, though he has learned to do better too. here along down the line, he'll really be asking for help and testing whatever sort of friendship they have, measuring its integrity. until then, accepting their somewhat friend-shaped relationship is more than enough for sizhui.
just wait, jin ling's going to eventually witness each colored rabbit named after their clans and then he'll really be embarrassed! that, too, won't come for a while though, so he's safe for now, both from named paper rabbits and actual rabbits. here's hoping it's not this many, to be fair, or they won't have any room in the garden and-slash-or greenhouse carriages to move around without possibly stepping on a bunny. much better that they have these origami ones instead, as they're smaller, more convenient to put places and there's no worry of hurting anything if they get stepped on— well, he'd be upset for a little while because oh no, a fallen comrade . . . but that's not like hurting a real animal, thank goodness.
this jin ling's calmer by far, and yet still completely himself in that jin ling way everyone can recognize. if he's provoking another individual in return for them doing it to him, that's at least a different excuse? some abrasiveness isn't the worst thing he could do to someone, truthfully, and perhaps sizhui's manners might rub off on him the longer they hang out.]
I'm not! [or has stopped now, at least. come on, jin ling, don't call him out when it's supposed to be ‘whatever’ and everything's fine if he likes them.
sizhui clearly loves his gift, given the care he's putting into handling it. his attention fleetingly darts toward xixue, he motions with a quick head-jerk then redirects to jin ling again after she's cleaned up her leftovers.] I know I don't need to, it's because I want to. [a pause to smile and:]
I'm allowed to share my birthday wealth however I like.

Jin Ling might just run away from the scene before it even happens. That's asking for some kind of collateral damage to Jin Lings embarrassed self. He can't take some of the extreme things his friend comes up with most of the time. Regardless though, he really won't argue with Sizhui on the matter. He doesn't really want to turn someone's birthday into a bad occasion, so he leaves it at that.
The boy looks towards Xixue as well. It seems like she's pretty pleased with herself and her meal. Well, at least she's quiet and not asking for too much attention. During their conversation, he momentarily lost track of what she is doing. While his mood has simmered down quite a lot, it's still obviously not completely gone. Maybe Sizhui is really rubbing off on him. ]
You sure have a weird way of expressing yourself on your birthday. Most people are content with doing nothing and receiving gifts or otherwise. You're the first person I've seen that would be willing to give baked goods that you made on your own to other people.
[ ON your BIRTHDAY, he wants to emphasize again, but he probably thinks that Sizhui gets the point now. ]
Fine, fine. I'm not here to argue what you can and can't do. It's not like it'll stop you, anyway.

he wouldn't be blamed for it, although it seems likely that there's a good chance it'd only happen whenever it's himself and jin ling, given he doesn't invite a whole lot of people to his and dennis's cabin, unless his boyfriend has okayed it too.
xixue makes a soft, acknowledging noise, hops down off the table then moves to stand beside jin ling's legs, waiting expectantly. sizhui, on the other hand, carefully tucks his cardstock box underneath an arm and begins leading them down the aisle toward their next destination: the kitchen carriage.] It feels proper to thank people in return for them giving me gifts. I know I don't necessarily need to, as it's my birthday, but it's nice, showing them appreciation for celebrating me. [if that makes sense?
while he does understand, it doesn't make him any less grateful, nor does it deter him from dumping some of these cookies off on jin ling.] Come along then, we have desserts to collect!
good to end here? :)
It's better for his friend to be happy on his birthday then have a discussion on what he should or shouldn't be doing. It IS his Birthday as emphasized. Jin Ling just crosses his arms as he stares at Xixue's presence by his leg. Fairy trots on over to the to the both of them with a happy bark. Jin Ling gives Xixue another once over, before offering his arm out for her to take, if she wants him to carry her.
Jin Ling certainly has found himself to enjoy her little presence a lot more than he anticipated. ]
No one's saying you're wrong about that.
[ It's said lightly, but he gets it. ] Yeah, yeah I get it. It's your birthday and you should be able to express your gratitude the way you want.
[ with a small nod, he collects the rest of his belongings, (Xixue, probably), and followed next to Sizhui. ]
