The Boys Are Back In Town

Who: Curufin, Reigen, and OTA

Where: Luggage car
What: Curufin and Reigen return from the void ministry.

Filing a report had been simple enough, similar to how Reigen would take care of any other paperwork. He was a little surprised at how mundane the process was: Curufin and he were in a white room with only a desk and writing utensils on hand, and Reigen just needed to fill out the complaint and request the ministry look into the case.

Once the form was filled out and he followed Curufin through the door, the next Reigen knew, he was in a suitcase.

"Ugh--is this how you treat your guests?! Stupid train..."

Kicking away the luggage he woke up in, he looked around as if to confirm he was back in the same train. Honestly, the vague smell of smoke was a bit comforting. He found the ICP connection, and quickly pressed the button to broadcast audio to the entire train.

"Hey guys. It's Arataka Reigen and Curufin Fe...whatever, we're back! Report filed! Watch, we're probably gonna get a confirmation email or something soon. It worked out."


With that settled, Reigen casually walked out the luggage car door as if he hasn't been gone for nearly a day. What? He was hungry!

"It do be being interesting, I did no never really be thinking about gods in different worlds. I did no even be knowing there did be being different worlds before I did be coming here."

She smiled at him, "I do no be thinking they can be hearing us here anyways, I do be wondering if there do be being gods in all the worlds we do be going to."

He smiles back. "I guess most people don't think about whether there are different worlds or not, much less whether there are gods on other worlds. I never thought about it either, before I left my own world and found two others."

She was smart, and brought up interesting issues.

"I'd be surprised if our gods can hear us in this world. I have the impression that gods are only concerned with their own domains, and that they themselves may not be aware that there are other worlds and other gods. But that's an interesting thought: are there gods in all the worlds that we have been to or are going to? Hmmm. What do you think?"

"I do no be knowing. There did be being magic users in the world with the goblins. But there do be being people on the train who do no be believing gods did be giving them their magic and so maybe it do no be being the same in other worlds. I did no be asking anybody because we did be supposed to be pretending we did be coming from their world."

Asking basic questions any baby would know the answer to was not a good way to pretend that.

"I can no be imagining a world with no gods." Even Peter's world had gods even if he refused to worship them.

"I suppose that's a point on which people may well disagree -- where do the magic powers come from? Are they given by the gods, or is magic just a skill that anybody can learn, or at least anybody who has a talent for it and the ability to work hard?"

Curufn hadn't asked any of the people on that world about magic or gods. He'd have liked to, but he didn't have the time.

"I can't imagine a world without gods either. But maybe that's because I'm from a world with gods. Maybe there are worlds without them, and the people there just think of it as being normal."

"Maybe." It still seems so strange to her both that some people may disagree that magic came from the gods and also that there might be worlds with no gods at all. But she's trying to keep an open mind. A few months ago she had had no idea about trains or voids or space or gravity magic.

Now all those things were part of what she knew. "Normal do be being a word that do be changing."

Curufin thinks that if there's one thing that travel to other worlds teaches, it's the necessity of keeping an open mind. One can't survive well without constantly learning new things.

He laughs. "That's for sure. What is normal in one world is different than what is normal in another. And besides, normal can change from moment to moment in the same world!"

"It can do." Everything can change in an instant. Everything you think you know twisted around so you aren't sure about anything anymore.

He nods. "It sounds like you've experienced such a change."

"I do be being here, do I no be?" She gestured at the carriage, the train in general. It's not what he means and she knows it but she just pulls a cheeky grin.

"Being taken to other worlds on a train do be being a big change."

He doesn't mind if she deliberately misinterprets his remark. Everybody has something to hide, and why not Little One? Besides, she has such an appealing cheeky grin!

"Can't disagree with you there. Being body-snatched by a train and impressed into a small army of Void warriors must surely count as a big change!"

"It do be counting as a big change." She nodded and shrugged. "I will be going now, since you did just be coming back."

They probably had reports to make. She had no idea who Curufin reported to, his father probably. But he had just been to a strange place so he there were people he would have to tell.

She was just glad he had taken the time to tell her as well.

"We all have to deal with this change!" he agreed. "And I don't think anybody would disagree that it's a big one."

He nodded. "I did just get back, and there are things I'd better be doing." Yes, he did have to tell some people, including his family.

But he was happy to talk to Little One and glad she had turned up at such an auspicious time, so that he had had the opportunity.

He gave her a smile and a wave. "We'll talk again soon, I'm sure."

"We will be doing." She nodded at him and then moved further into the carriage, waving at him as he left.

She liked Curufin, he was good at giving her information and was always kind. Their conversation had been really interesting and made her think about lots of things. Like a lesson but one where she got to say what she thought as well.
