A New Platform [Intro Post March]

PLATFORM STOP: MONTH 17
(QUICKSAND)

BEFORE ARRIVAL

"Good morning Voidtreckers, it is day 1 of the month of Quicksand. Points have been updated on the system."

The voice of the Voidtrecker Express welcomes passengers at the same time as always, sometime after breakfast. With points updated, everyone can spend the morning shopping. Most people will be expecting the second announcement that comes a few hours later, as the colours of the void outside the windows blur more and more.

"Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. The weather is cold and damp. Exit from void in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."

A lurch and a jolt, and the windows fill with the fog that means they are at a platform.

ON THE PLATFORM

1. THE ARRIVAL

At first, all your character can see is steam billowing around them as they come to their senses. But as their eyes adjust, they find themselves on a platform.
It is cold, a slush of ice and rain on the ground underneath their feet. It's not currently raining though. The platform is made of black cobbles, slippy under their feet, dark stone gates serving as barriers giving the impression of a severe and grim place.

They stand in clothes not their own, in a style they might not even recognise. They're carrying a rucksack on their person, and for a moment it seems to just be them, alone on this platform. Before the fog starts to subside, and they'll see they're one of eleven figures: all facing the tracks, and all dressed in cargo trousers and hoodies, the latter in one of four colours. Purple, red, blue or orange.

But then there's a roaring sound to get their attention, and out from the fog arrives a train. A sleek black, it it reads The Voidtrecker Express in gold lettering on the side. Every one of the doors hiss as they open automatically, and out pours a strange assortment of people, over a hundred at least. Some are human, some less so, with a majority wearing the same hoodie of four colours as they do, though some sport outfits in a variety of styles.

The train doors close behind them, and the vehicle is cloaked in the same fog that hides the world beyond the platform. A group of people head towards the gates of the platform, their expressions blank and unaffected by their surroundings. Ansem, Connor, Curufin, Elle Days, Freddy Fazbear, Margulis, Murderbot, Potato, Vexen, Will Stanton and Yota They disappear through the barriers, but no one else can - all people can do is wait until the train re-emerges, finishing whatever changes it's making.

2. BOARDING THE TRAIN

After a short time, perhaps ten minutes or so, the fog clears and the doors hiss open again. Everyone will feel a pull when they do, a need to board, and those from the train may encourage new arrivals to board. This feeling grows into one of apprehension and turns worse the longer they stay off-board.

For those that do board, they may find themselves in a few different carriages, but most likely the standard coach. A row of seats sit available, with a few tables between each. More likely than not, some cookies have been set out with jugs of drink, and cups available for pouring.

For those that don't, however, they're likely to attract attention if they're spotted. And if that fails... an unfortunate end will await them.

3. DEPARTURE

Do a little exploring, if you will. But people will have half an hour total from the train's arrival before a second horn sounds, encouraging any stragglers taking advantage of the fresh air to board. After five minutes from this, the doors slide shut. Veteran passengers know what will happen next, but they may wish to brief their new companions.

The train begins to rumble with activity, and the platform starts to disappear into a fog as the voidcraft moves. A female-coded artificial voice echoes throughout the train.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express. Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points, and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog-filled sky.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated. Entry into Voidspace in ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one."

A shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding. As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady itself. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever-changing colours.

Welcome to the Void.

ON THE TRAIN

1. EXPLORING

With nowhere to go but through the train's carriages, this is a good time for newcomers to explore. For veterans, it's back to your everyday life aboard the Voidtrecker Express.

¤ New arrivals will notice a screen and console in every carriage sharing the same message, and a stack of leaflets in holders by them offering further information to the curious (see 'Publications'). There are lavatories available on each carriage on one end, with another console with a deposit box under it at the other. This is the train shop.

¤ It'll take some time for newbies to figure out the layout, even if there's only two directions to go in. Go one end, and you'll find the food stores and washing utilities. This month's key ingredient is pineapple, and you're sure to bump into others curious about what's in the stock.

¤ Go to the other end, and you'll find the sleeper cabins. Plaques sit on the wall by each door with the names of their occupants, and one of these will be yours - hopefully, they'll figure out that swiping their ticket against the doorpad will open it up to them. In most rooms, the occupied beds are obvious, leaving the spotless, empty spaces for the newcomers. Room is tight, but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and, the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches full of spare blankets and pillows.

¤ At the farthest end in this direction is the luggage carriage, where passengers who have bought items from the train shop will find their purchases. There are also medical kits for every one, each labelled with their full roster name. These are scattered around the luggage carriage in various suitcases and bags, but there's also a small fridge and kettle here with bottled water, for those who want a quiet drink.

For those of Purple team who go looking for their reward they will find simple boxes of cupcakes to share out. There's a cupcake for all of purple team, even the new arrivals, share in your new team's success!

2. ACTIVITIES

But of course, there's also everything in-between those two directions, and the people in them.

¤ Areas of note will be the training gym, where there's always regulars training to pass the time. There's a training board offering services, but maybe you'll find someone who catches your eye in here. Or even its gear?

¤ Is your character used to the appliances to be found in the kitchen? Depending on when your character wanders in, they may find someone testing out a recipe, preparing for lunch, or even dinner time.

¤ The library offers a quiet place, with a fair selection of books from fiction to non-fiction. Is your character interested in learning more about the void? Picking up an action or adventure book? Wow, there sure are a few magazines.

¤ There's also media to consume, from the games car, the cinema, to the arts carriage. Ever played a virtual reality game? Wanted to learn how to fly? Have you seen a screen of moving pictures? There's now documentaries to be found in the cinema's catalogues, from How To programming, Void-related topics, and sports.

3. REST AND SLEEP

¤ Time is difficult to track in the void, even with the few clocks around showing a 21 hour time. But the windows allowing a view of the kalediscope void will shift to a pitch black once the time reaches 12, and keep for the rest of the day.

¤ Breakfast, lunch, and dinner time is usually announced by whoever's cooking that day, and when. Sometimes it's decided by the team chores; other times, it's decided by who wants to be cooking.

¤ But sleep eventually comes to all, even if they don't want it to. When 21 hours have finally passed on the train, all passengers, whether they need sleep or not, will see black - only to start a new day in their cabin beds, with the sound of the train's automated voice greeting them with a 'Good morning' message.

Zelgadis Greywords | OTA

[personal profile] gathersnomoss 2022-03-01 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Platform

Another two weeks, another platform. Zelgadis mostly sees it as a chance to get some space from everyone else on the train and stretch his legs, and see who is getting off here. He’s not expecting people from home to show up, since no one else has, and he’s not one of the people invested in being the Welcome Wagon for new arrivals. He does wear the purple train hoodie and tan pants, but has his cloak on over it, as the last few stations have been cold or raining or both. This one was no different.

He scans the crowd, and freezes when he sees a distinctive man in red in the crowd of new arrivals. Dammit, the train even got the color correct. And from Yondu, he knew the train could pick up the dead as well as the living. “Oh, no no no…”

Other Voidtrekkers might watch Zelgadis attempt to head back into the train, and most likely run into the barrier. Failing that, he is going to retreat to a corner, his cloak's hood covering his head and hunched over, and wait until the train lets them all board.

In the past, he might have confronted Rezo. But at the moment, all he could think of was that he was finally human after years, and now the man who had originally transformed him was here.

.. okay, that can't be right, Inigo thinks as he watches Zelgadis race across the platform like that. First bouncing off against the train, and then moving into a corner, almost as if the other is hiding.

It's.. strange. Or at least, it's nothing like he's ever seen from the other before. For a moment Inigo wonders if there's some sort of effect going on around this platform, but he can't feel anything influencing him - so he frowns and steps over in the other's direction, looking concerned.

"Is everything alright?"

He's pretty sure the answer to that is no, but he'd rather hear it from Zelgadis' own mouth. Just so Inigo can determine just how bad things are right now, and what's causing the other to act this way in the first place.

"Someone from home is here," Zelgadis said. He didn't recall how much of his own backstory Inigo knew. The context is pretty clear that 'someone from home' is not a good thing, at least this particular someone given Zelgadis had been fine with going home the last month.
flatteries: (but i have seen the same)

That little bit of context is definitely something Inigo is catching on to. If Zelgadis were happy to see this person from home, he sure wouldn't be running across the platform like this, nor trying to hide.

It makes Inigo frown. Zelgadis seems like a pretty good guy, so there's a big chance that means that whoever showed up from his world on the platform isn't.

"Who are they?" Inigo frowns. But just the fact that he's staring at Zelgadis, rather than looking around him, is giving away something important here. He's not looking for a name to start a witch hunt or something. No, he's just concerned about Zelgadis, and it's hard to know how to help him with this problem when he doesn't know who this person is to Zelgadis, or why they're causing him such instinctive distress. It's all born out of worry for the other.

"Most of the train knows I used to be a chimera, or at least they know I wasn't human when I boarded."

Funny, that was getting less and less true as more people arrived and departed. Which was weird. But Inigo was present before that.

"I was born human. Rezo," gesturing to indicate the person who had provoked the reaction, "was the one who transformed me."

There's more, but that's the personal bit. There were beings back home that could provoke the 'oh shit' response, but mostly out of 'we are all going to die horribly unless the train has safeguards I don't know about'.

(Come to think of it, Rezo may also fall in that category, depending on the place in his life that the train grabbed him.)

(Oh, crap, is he going to actually have to talk to Rezo and check?)
flatteries: (the harvest left no food for you to eat)

[personal profile] flatteries 2022-03-07 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Wait."

At least Inigo does full well remember what Zelgadis used to look like before he turned human again. It's hard to suddenly forget a look like that, after all. So it makes the other's story pretty easy to grasp.

.. yet, at the same time, makes things so much more concerning.

"Why did this Rezo change you like that in the first place?" Because the answer to that could change a lot. Even though Inigo is pretty sure that it can't be for any good reason, or Zelgadis wouldn't have been freaking out like this upon even just spotting that other person.

"He said it was to make me stronger. In reality, he needed a guinea pig and I was convenient. I didn't find that one out until later when I found some of his other experiments."
flatteries: (you won't be going thirsty)

[personal profile] flatteries 2022-03-09 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
That definitely sounds bad.

"He was doing that to all sorts of people?" That's experiments, after all. Plural. It's not just like what happened with Zelgadis was an one-off sort of thing, and that's concerning, considering that person is now going to be stuck with an entire group of people in a tiny space.

And while that has stopped some people from being total jackasses before, there have definitely been cases where it hasn't.

".. Do you think he might try to do the same to people here?" In that case they will definitely have to take some precautions. Inigo's mind is already spinning with thoughts because of it, making him look more serious than usually.
gathersnomoss: ({h determined)

[personal profile] gathersnomoss 2022-03-09 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Zelgadis shook his head. "Unless you count the time he made a copy of himself, I was the only human subject that I know about -- the other 'subjects' were animals. He was testing out things for use on himself, so people on the train would be safe." Zelgadis is leaving out some context there about why Zelgadis of all people would be the next best thing to an actual clone, but he was trying to focus on Inigo's question rather than a full recitation of backstory.

"If he's from around the time he died, he'll know the answers he was trying to find, and that learning how to alter bodies won't actually help him."

It meant Zelgadis's panic was probably irrational. He could think of reasons other than experimentation that Rezo might mess with him, but they depended on knowing the other man's motivations now, and Zelgadis couldn't trust that they would be benevolent.

"Zelgadis?"

Yondu remembers the story, but there was never a description of the guy involved. Just a scant knowledge of something that went down that skewed the young man's whole life. And now he's rushing to get away from the platform.

There ain't a lot of newcomers, but something set him off. He just ends up following him onto the train once the door is open.

"Yo, you alright? Need somethin' done?" 'Cause even after all this time of being on the train, sometimes peacemaking isn't the first thought on his mind. Especially when it has Zelgadis, who has otherwise been crazy sturdy, acting like this.

Re: Platform

[personal profile] gathersnomoss 2022-03-02 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Zelgadis is starting to calm down, to at least start to think analytically about the problem. Which was 'I am trapped on a train with someone I loathe, and neither of us can die and eventually he's going to learn I'm here and rather more human than when he let me last'. At least anger was replacing fear, which was a more typical reaction to Rezo.

"Remember how I told you I was a human who was transformed? The guy that did it is one of the new arrivals. Did you see the very tall man, with closed eyes and fuschia hair? Red team? Human?" The last was an afterthought because while Zelgadis was used to assuming human as default, he knew Yondu wasn't.
yondu: (0 6 1)

[personal profile] yondu 2022-03-02 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Humans were practically a default on the train. Zelgadis couldn't be faulted for it.

"You don't reckon he'll try it again, do ya?"

He doesn't know about their relationship. Couldn't even pick out a family resemblance other than 'generally pretty folks'. Still hadn't even fathomed that a man'd do that to his grandson.

He's just worried for the kid.
gathersnomoss: ({h determined)

[personal profile] gathersnomoss 2022-03-03 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Was he?

"Rationally, no. I was an experiment, and he'd have no reason to duplicate it."

Emotionally, yes. That was exactly what he was afraid of. The last time he'd met Rezo, he'd had nothing he felt like he had to lose, so it was safe to be just angry at him.
yondu: (0 2 9)

[personal profile] yondu 2022-03-03 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
He'd be mad as hell. Yondu's not one to go on endless missions of vengeance, but he is someone that doesn't like being downgraded to the role of some kinda object without his consent, and it doesn't sound like Zelgadis had been up for the whole 'being turned into a rock' plan.

"I don't think he'll pull nothin'. There's some plenty strong people here and don't you be ashamed to run and hide behind 'em should you smell a bad spot comin'." He puts his hand on Zel's shoulder, making sure to tip his head to keep looking at him.

"You hear me, boy? Somethin' gets done here, we'll see it undone. He try and pull a stunt? Someone will throw up a wall in front of ya. He do somethin'? And it will be fixed." That's the best thing about allies, and he knows even here, Zelgadis has made or is capable of making plenty.
gathersnomoss: ({h neutral)

[personal profile] gathersnomoss 2022-03-05 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"He's a powerful sorcerer," Zelgadis said. "And older than he looks. I never could beat him. I'm not sure how I feel about people I like getting hurt on my account."

It's been a while since he's had people he likes that were stepping in danger for him. Normally, it's the other way around, once he started actually trusting people after Zolf and Rodimus.
yondu: (1 2 3)

[personal profile] yondu 2022-03-06 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
"There are a lotta people here I could never beat, and you know if people like ya they ain't gonna stand by and watch somethin' happen to you even if it's for their own good. Hell, durin' our last mission I tried to take aggro away from the camp? I ended up havin' Soldat and Raven and Tobirama followin' me out."

And Raven is practically like a daughter to him now.

"So if somethin' does happen to you, people gonna notice. Flat out. So the ones close enough, maybe you oughta speak with 'em. Let 'em know to check on ya if you go quiet for a while or don't show up to your cabin."

"Given the train just revives everyone in the luggage car, it takes a lot of foul play off the table," Zelgadis noted.

Danny frowns as he spots Zelgadis in the corner, acting like he was trying to hide from something.

"Hey, are you okay?"
gathersnomoss: ({h neutral)

[personal profile] gathersnomoss 2022-03-07 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, Zelgadis is kind of shocked so many people are checking on him. It's weird. Touching, but weird. "Someone from home showed up."
schrodingersghost: (Fenton - Sneaky)

[personal profile] schrodingersghost 2022-03-07 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Is it safe to guess they're not a friend?"

Or so Danny guessed by the way Zelgadis was here and not catching up with them.
gathersnomoss: ({h determined)

[personal profile] gathersnomoss 2022-03-07 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Bingo," Zelgadis said. "I'd say 'he's supposed to be dead', but I've said that before. Add that to the train's weird relationship with the mortality of its passengers, and I shouldn't be surprised."

Rezo might actually have been dead-dead (or at least dying) before the train grabbed at whatever it did to tether people.
schrodingersghost: (Fenton - Hands Up)

[personal profile] schrodingersghost 2022-03-07 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm the last person who can say anything about weird relationships with mortality, but supposed to be dead people do seem to show up here a lot."

Danny pauses.

"Is he a threat? And if so, I'm totally offering to punch him if needed."
gathersnomoss: ({h neutral)

[personal profile] gathersnomoss 2022-03-07 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Zelgadis is calm enough now to get past his gut reaction and actually consider the question. "He's the one who transformed me. I don't know if 'punching the much-older-than-he-looks sorcerer' is a good idea, but if it's necessary, you'll know."

"Other than that... it depends on what part of his life the train stole him from. People don't always come from the same time."

It occurred to him that Rezo might not even know him, though a combination of 'same surname on the roster' and 'obviously using the sort of magic from their world' would have some pretty big hints. Anyway, Zelgadis wouldn't be that lucky.

Hell, the older Rezo was, the longer he'd been living with a Dark Lord sealed in his body. Unless the train left Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu alone (which, again, Zelgadis isn't going to count on being that lucky, since apparently his good fortune for the last six months has finally gotten the attention of karma and here is the bill), that was a major concern beyond Rezo himself being an unpredictable asshole.

This is not improving his mood.
schrodingersghost: (Fenton - Looking Up)

[personal profile] schrodingersghost 2022-03-07 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Right then. He's definitely going on my list of people to be punched if needed." Danny didn't know Zelgadis well, but anyone who went around transforming people into things they definitely didn't want to be went on his fruitloop list.

Danny had some opinions about being forced to transform into something you hadn't been, even if he had learned how to live with his own.

[personal profile] gathersnomoss 2022-03-08 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thank you," Zelgadis said. "I have no idea if that is actually helpful, but I appreciate the offer."
