A new Platform [Intro post~ August]

For those on the Train

"Good morning passengers, it is day sixteen of the month of Apple." The train announces as always as everyone wakes up the morning of the sixteenth. "Due to your success on Hub World #5739 your team points have been updated on the system. The on train shop has unlocked new stock."

For those going to investigate it might seem like the boredom of the last two weeks will be alleviated a little. More so after a few hours when there is a second announcement.

"Shortly arriving into a designated void platform. Exit from void imminent."

By now they should know to hold on as the train jerks and jolts. There is only fog outside the windows but the train soon comes to a stop. The doors hiss open.

As they exit into the fog they may notice Hibiki exiting from the luggage carriage door. She hasn’t been seen since the Hub World and they might be forgiven for believing she stayed behind. But here she is, backpack on her back as she walks through the station. She heads no call, reacts to no words and cannot be stopped as she walks to the ticket barrier and disappears through it.

It is impossible to follow. But you soon may be distracted because this platform is far from empty.

For new arrivals

At first all you can see if steam. Billowing around you as you come to your senses. You are standing, in clothes that are not your own, styles you might not even recognise. You are carrying a rucksack on your back. For a moment it seems to just be you, alone in the white haze but then the steam begins to fade and you realise you aren’t alone.

The platform is not very large, but it hold twelve figures all facing the tracks, all wearing similar clothing, even if one of them is a spider. The tracks stretch left and right into steam, or perhaps fog. Nothing can be seen to either side. There is a wall around the platform and the only entrance is a ticket barrier. It cannot be open, nor do there seem to be any staff.

What there is, is a train. Jet black and gleaming where it stands on the rails.Voidtrecker Express is emblazoned in the engine in gold. There is a hiss as the doors slide open.

Out step a selection of people, wearing clothes just like yours.

The Train

The doors hiss open. Those from the train may encourage those on the platform to board. It’s not like there is anywhere else to go and even if there was, you feel a pull. A need to board, a feeling that staying on the platform would not be a good thing.

Once on the train there is plenty to explore. A new sleeper carriage has appeared as has a medical bay. Neither were there before those already on the train had disembarked to meet their new travelling companions.

Each ICP shows the same message. The food stores have been topped up with new fresh food, though it seems that eggs are still predominately on the menu.

New passengers will find their tickets allow them into their cabins. They may need to negotiate for beds, especially if they want a top bunk!

Room is tight but there are storage cubbies at the head of each bed, beds fold up and the bottom bunks double as benches for the small table. There is storage under those benches and you will hopefully find a pillow for your bed if it has not been nabbed by a roommate, there are also spare blankets for if it gets cold.

Departure

A second horn sounds to encourage any stragglers and the doors slide shut. Those who boarded two weeks ago will know what is coming next.

The train sets off, the fog obscuring the view as it picks up speed.

"Welcome aboard, passengers of the Voidtrecker Express." A female-coded artificial sounding voice echoes throughout the train. "Please take the time to read the passenger information displayed on the Information and Communication points and familiarise yourself with the layout and emergency exits."

The train begins to tilt, leaving the ground and rising up into the fog filled sky.

"Entrance into Voidspace imminent. New passengers are advised to remain seated."

Hopefully someone warns you that you really want to heed that warning because a moment later there is a shudder, a jolt, a lurch to the left. A flash of light, colourful and blinding.

As quick as it happens it is done. The train seems to steady. The fog from the windows is gone now, replaced with a kaleidoscope of ever changing colours.

Welcome to voidspace.

"No. Paladins can be Warriors of Light, but not all Warriors of Light are paladins. I'm a bard by trade, myself." Among a number of other things, really. Well, maybe 'Warrior of Light' meant nothing to this man. That was all right.

She laughed at Edge's next comment, though. "That seems to be a common affliction for some of us, here. Travel the lands, do heroic deeds. Now we just do them on this train, I suppose."

Though Sarai looked a mite guilty, considering when they'd been on Ciyesia, she'd spent more time stocking the train than actually being a hero...

"How strange. If we're all the heroic sort anyway, whoever brought us here should have known they could just ask!" What hero, king, or ninja could turn down the opportunity for heroism were it to come knocking? But kidnapping would just put them at odds with the ones in need!

"Well, this is certainly a mess!"

"See, you understand. That is why this is so strange." Which it certainly was. The Warrior of Light was unlikely to turn down a cry for aid, as well--in Sarai's case, it was completely against her nature to ignore someone in need.

"It is. And none of us know how to get out of it, and now, you've been drawn into it as well. That far, you have my apologies." Sarai gave Edge a slight bow, polite as ever. She knew it wasn't her fault, this train and its strangeness, and yet she felt as if she ought to apologize anyway. So she did.

"It's not the worst thing I've been through," Edge said with an expansive shrug. The fall of Eblan had been worse. The trip through the Lunar Subterrane had been terrifying. This was irritating, but also affected only him. Eblan and the world as a whole were in no danger. "Just means I'll have to put paid to whoever caused this mess, as soon as I can!"

"Don't think that you're alone in that," Sarai replied, chuckling. In more ways than one, after all. Being framed for the murder of the Sultana of Ul'dah had been no fun at all, and being chased around Dravania by the Warriors of Darkness, even less so. Hydaelyn might be in danger still, but--wasn't it usually?

That was why she needed to get home, especially with the Scions being mostly out of commission. "I'd like to get home myself, preferably sooner rather than later..."

"At least the people here seem nice and charming, even if you're exceptional in those regards!" Edge said, flashing a grin that wasn't hidden by his missing mask.

"I am a bard by trade, good sir," Sarai said, laughing merrily. "It is my job to be both nice and charming--and to know things and ferret things out, if I must! But I also like doing it. Which is all to the good here, I do think."

The steam from the train looked to be picking up, and an uncomfortable feeling welled in Sarai's chest. "Perhaps you might accompany me on to the train, then? I...I've felt this before, when I first arrived here. It isn't a good idea to stay."

She felt a bit bad--certainly Edge might feel as if she wiled him onto the train by asking so sweetly, but Dread had felt like he had to get on to the train--maybe Edge would, as well?
onehandsomeslickninja: (what oh no)

[personal profile] onehandsomeslickninja 2019-08-13 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
She didn't have to feel guilty -- Edge almost didn't notice as the sensation twinged inside him as well. One hand went to his chest as if it were a physical thing.

"Yeah. Yeah, that would be a good idea." For both of them, he was sure. Whatever was going on, he didn't like it -- but he didn't have much choice, so he'd go the only direction he could and trust that it was the correct one.

About the same reaction Sarai had had, the first time she'd been introduced to this train.

She moved towards the door and hopped up onto the stairway, leaning out to give Edge a hand up. Certainly he didn't need it, but Sarai had always been of the mind to begin how she intended to continue, and giving him a helping hand was well within her character.

"Welcome to the train--I guess," she said, something of a rueful smile on her face.

Pride demanded he mount on his own, courtesy insisted he should accept the gesture. Because this girl, despite being scaled and horned, was nonetheless a girl, courtesy won and he took her hand to step on properly.

"For all the fuss to get us here, I feel like this is anticlimactic."
sweetnessandfight: (me likey)

[personal profile] sweetnessandfight 2019-08-16 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"I promise you, the climax will come later. I'm not certain how, I'm only certain that it will." Something would happen. She could promise that, and so she did.

"I just don't know what it is, so I can't tell you." Too bad the Echo didn't give powers of prescience, that would be something useful, here...
onehandsomeslickninja: (by my blade)

[personal profile] onehandsomeslickninja 2019-08-19 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Edge nodded. "I'll grant that. All this effort and strangeness can't possibly end with anything less than a confrontation worthy of it." That much he, too, was certain of, even if nothing like that loomed at present.
