A Fluffy New Friend

WangJi was happy. How could he not be when the best husband he could ask for gifted him with a white rabbit. Rabbits were his favorite and he liked them. Now he had one of his own.

Of course, he wouldn't be a responsible pet owner if he didn't show his pet around the train so it could be used to the accommodations... and the fact that their home moved even though most of the time it wasn't too noticeable.

But he could easily be found around on arrival day with the rabbit safely tucked in his arms, still clearly visible so it could look around and see and greet others.

Prior to mealtime, WangJi could be found in the dining car sitting at one of the tables, letting the rabbit stretch its legs for a few minutes and look around. Yes, the rabbit was on the table, but he wasn't letting it out of arms reach just in case. Luckily, it seemed more content to just sit for the moment.

Where the rabbit was most happy was in the garden car. It had the chance to run around a bit in there and as long as it stayed away from the plants other passengers were growing, WangJi let it explore and walk on its own though he was not far away to make sure it didn't get anything it shouldn't.

"Family can be as much those you choose as those whose blood you share." Nerdanel nods, thinking of the grey-eyed Peredhel lord who names her two eldest sons foster-father, although their true title is closer to kidnaper.

She laughs, delighted.

"Sweet boy! I am sure he did not make that mistake again."

"That is true. He is my son and no one can say otherwise."

No one would know otherwise.

"No, he did not. He had fun feeding the rabbits though. I remember it fondly, that first time where we fed the rabbits. He enjoyed it a lot. It was one of the first times after he was feeling better. He was sick when I found him."

"Well said." Nerdanel smiles to hear it.

"Sick? Oh dear... nothing too serious, I hope?"

"It was concerning, but in the end, was not serious. He recovered, but he did not remember much of when he was younger for the longest time. He remembers now."

"Poor child... I am glad that he does though! Tis hard, I am sure, to not be able recall."

[achickenformylove]

"It is. In the end... it worked better for him that he didn't at an age when they do not realize to filter the things they say. His life before, it could have caused problems for something that was not his doing."

"Oh dear." She murmurs. "I take it there were those who would have taken the circumstances of his birth against him?"

[achickenformylove]

"There were many. A large sect in our world attempted to subjugate all others. The sects rose up and defeated them. However, the other sects believed all members of that sect to be guilty just by virtue of their birth, even if they were not cultivators or not old enough. He was perhaps the last child born into that sect."

"How cruel! The children had no part in such doings, and should not have been so maligned."

[achickenformylove]

"It is. There were many that had no part in what the sect did and yet they were punished for it. I did what I could. My son has proven to be an excellent cultivator and at least he did not remember the nature of his life before living with me."

"That is good, and I am glad to know that he has found his place."

She smiles. "He seemed such a happy young man. Very gentle."

"He is. He is a good junior with our sect."

[marriedanidiot]

"I am glad. What of the other children from that clan? Are they well?"

[achickenformylove]

"They are also well. Others that are older as well, Sizhui leads when they go on night hunts. The next oldest is Lan Jingyi. He is a capable junior, but still is learning to follow our rules."

Aka, he is not a proper Lan disciple.

"Ah, that does a heart good to know." She smiles and chuckles softly.

"Well, he is still a junior! Plenty of time left to grow."

[achickenformylove]

"Indeed he does. He at least has Sizhui to help make sure he remembers himself. They work well together."

This was one of the reasons that Jingyi went out with them. Not only was a capable as a fighter, but he listened to Sizhui and respected him even if he had the habit of speaking without thinking because he would never say anything to slight his friend.

"The bond of brothers, whether of blood or choice, is a strong tether and also motivation." She agrees.

"Hopefully they will mature in time."

[achickenformylove]

"It is. They are very much like brothers. I'm sure, given more time, Jingyi will mature and be more capable of following our family rules."

[marriedanidiot]

"One can hope." She smiles. "All of us must go through some maturing!"

[achickenformylove]

"Indeed. I certainly did. I was not the best at interacting with others my own age when I was younger."

[marriedanidiot]

"Well, I would not have thought so." She assures him. "You have been nothing but polite and kind."

[achickenformylove]

"Thank you. I have grown up much since then. I wasn't sure who I was at that time."

[marriedanidiot]

"I think that is true for most at a young age - I have known precious few who have had their minds set and not changed it!"

[achickenformylove]

"That is true. Most I knew from that age have changed, either for the better or for worse."

Jin Zixuan had become a devoted husband and father with what time fate had left him. Jiang Wanyin had become impossible.

Even so! To live, I think, is to grow - in one way, or another. Stagnation is not good for the soul.
