Let's Have a Party!

It was three days after the incident with the train and right at two weeks since they'd been allowed to get off this train and roam a new world. Sure somewhere in there, they'd had a brief reprieve involving a new platform and mess of newcomers, but that had hardly counted as a break from the train. So, the point was, they needed a chance to blow off some steam. What better way than organize a party and roll out the last of his ale to share?

He'd recruited Sarai and Maglor to play their harps and/ or sing for music; Ignis, Ash and Evie to make hors d'oeuvres, Dread and Peter to bring in some chairs; and rigged a lamp and some cloth to make a disco ball-like display in the room (which he made Peter to promise not to touch).

Now he just had to get the guests on the dance floor... to harp music? He misses 'regular' music. Sigh.

"Well, I'd certainly be delighted to give you a show any time you might so desire!" This is more like it, the conversation getting back to where it should be.

"Maybe on a mission? That'd work. And probably do some good." For other people, right? She wasn't sure how impressed she was, Renee wasn't. Not one bit, but she'll let him go. Edge seems mostly harmless, after all.

"Oh, more than just that, though I'd be delighted to work at your side. But what better way to fill the idle hours aboard the train than with good company?" Edge was feeling pretty good about this! He was on a roll, giving some of his best work considering the circumstances.

"I...guess? I never would've thought that I was good company." Mostly because of the trolling. Renee knows she's a pain in Tony's ass, but she kind of prefers it that way. She's made other folks deal with that, too.

"Mostly I do chores and then hang out in the gym...when it's not full of party materials. Gotta keep in shape, after all." Not that Renee's in bad shape, but she figures there's always room for improvement.

"You certainly do THAT quite well," Edge said approvingly. Definitely nothing to complain about from his perspective. "We'll have to train together as well! I can't let myself slack either."

"Yeah, I can use that, that's for sure. I hadn't graduated from the Institute yet, so I wasn't a proper hero." Not that Renee didn't have an idea that there were ninjas where she was from, but she'd never heard of Eblan in her life, so Edge, as weird as he was, was probably okay to talk to about being a mutant. Especially since he didn't think she was particularly monstrous.

Weird, but a good kind of weird.

"Oh, you were still in training?" That's what he'd parsed out of her statement, even if the actual words had all been put together in ways that didn't make much sense. A school for heroism? How did that work?

"Yeah, getting control of my powers was what I was learning there." So, infer that they were probably students like her with weird powers. It wasn't like she hadn't called herself a mutant in his earshot!

"And some combat training and so on. Mostly hand to hand." Renee shrugged at that.

"Now you're really talking my language! After all, one of the founding principles of ninjutsu is the martial arts. Maybe you'd let me see what you can do sometime?"

Nope, he hasn't given up yet.

"I guess, but it's not like it's anything special? Pretty damn basic." Well, Renee was giving him many funny looks, but it's not like she was telling him to go away, at least.

"I don't know if I should be learning ninjitsu though. Isn't that being sneaky too? I'm not really good at that..." Mostly because she was tall for a girl and also kind of clumsy. Just a little.

Edge waved off her wories. "Oh, no worries there. The actual art of ninjutsu requires both a gift and extensive training to master. But the principles of it, like combat and stealth and so forth, can be taught readily enough."

Ugh, really? "Here's hoping I don't have a gift, then. I've got entirely too many gifts in my life already." Mutant powers were more like a curse, really.

"I could use the combat help, though, so yeah, I'll take it. Sure. Thanks." Renee could sound more enthused, probably, but she was a little more worried about the idea of another 'gift' she might need to deal with.

"Oh, don't worry about that! Ninjutsu has more in common with black magic than it does anything else. It would've popped up for you long before this!" Heck, did she even know what black magic was? Seemed a lot of people here didn't!

"I don't think your definition of black magic and mine add up..." Renee said. Edge just didn't seem the type to cut the heads off of chickens and worship the devil, not that she even felt like she needed to say so. "What's yours about? I don't actually do black magic, so I...don't think you really need to know."

She paused, and shrugged. "Though if you're really curious, I'll tell you." Just so he knew that people from Earth were weird.

"Destructive magics, as opposed to healing or summoning." Edge blinked, a bit taken aback. "Why, what's yours?"

"Ritual sacrifices, if you really want to know. And it's only 'mine' insofar as it happens on my world." Renee shrugged. It wasn't something she was ever interested in, or ever wanted to know about, but she also knew that you didn't always get what you wanted.

"Oh."

His hand tightened, but he didn't have a dagger or sword hilt to grip, so he just pressed it into his side for focus.

"No, we don't do that. I would not permit that to happen."

"Yeah, let's just say I'm not a fan either, okay?" Renee crossed her arms over her chest and frowned. Surely Edge didn't think she endorsed that sort of sick shit, did he?

"Just 'cause I know about it doesn't mean it's something I'd do," she groused.

Not in the least. Edge just couldn't let a comment like that pass without making his own stance clear.

"Oh, I didn't think you would! But some people would, you know. I'd love nothing more than to show them the error of their ways."

"Yeah, well, I'll hold them, and you do that, okay?" Because that was something Renee could get behind, at least. She was pretty sure that those sacrifices just got bigger and worse as time went on, and she wanted nothing to do with any of it, unless it was punishing the transgressors.

"That sounds like a good plan to me!" Edge flashed her a thumbs-up, quite satisfied with her reaction. "Though I hope we don't see any of that, it might be the sort of thing we run into on this trip."

"There's a lot of potential for fuckery on this trip, don't kid yourself." Or her, though Renee really didn't have a lot of illusions when it came down to it.

"I wasn't around for the first mission, but it didn't sound like a cakewalk much when I was asking around about it." It made her a bit apprehensive, when it all came down to it.

"That's because I wasn't here!" Edge waved off any worries with a flick of his wrist. "After what I've been through, I can't imagine anything this train takes us to will be more than a piece of cake!"

"Yeaaah I don't think so." Renee smirked at that. "I don't think you're Train Savior, just add ninja." Not that she thought she was much of anything either, but this? Edge was just too much.

"Guess time will tell, though."

"Wait till you see what I do and how well I do it, and then you'll be singing a different tune!" If nothing else, Edge lacked no confidence at all.
