[Open] Escapades With A Mad Genius
Who: Senku Ishigami and anyone who wants to spend time with him.
Where: Various
When: Imagination 1-6
What: Senku apparently has all kinds of things to do pre-mission.
Warnings: One prompt is medical in nature, it's not really graphic.
Kitchen
In the absence of a laboratory, Senku appeared to be using cooking to cope. No, he wasn't on the purple team, meaning he wasn't officially cooking, but it was keeping him busy, and no one really wanted him to have idle hands for too long.
From the time they left the platform, until the night before the mission, he could likely be found in there at least once a day working on one project or another.
The first day, he was busy using the new ingredient of honey to make a caramel on the stove, and he had bunches of cilantro and some limes on the counter in front of him, as well as a water carbonatation machine.
After that, he could be found with a few other projects. In one instance he had lemons, honey and coconut oil in front of him. In another, he appeared to be making some kind of marinade with soy sauce and a variety of spice packets and some kind of meat. In a third, he was slicing ginger root and daikon as thinly as he could.
On Imagination day 5, he'd found his way to a few mangoes which since he didn't wear his SCA on the train very often, he didn't get the reminder that peeling mangoes was a bad idea. He'd barely started the first one when he developed a rash on his hands and at least the skin that could be seen swelled up, including his eyes and lips, thanks to urushiol being present between the peel and the fruit. One might stop at that point and deal with the allergic reaction, but Senku proceeded to continue peeling fruit as though he wasn't immensely uncomfortable.
Spa
Senku will likely check out the spa late in the evening when he couldn't sleep one night. For modesty's sake, at least other people's modesty, he will select the requisite orange swimsuit and sink into the water for a little soak. Notably, when wet, his hair collapses into some semblance of ordinary.
He wasn't interested in a massage, but a soak and a steam wouldn't be out of place.
[OOC: Also available, choose your own adventure. Senku haunts most cars, he doesn't sleep a whole lot and he doesn't usually mind company. You can just add whatever you like - don't be afraid of the pre-planned threads, or you can contact me on Discord: Ammeschan#5385 or

So whatever it is Senku tasks them with, Roland will do as he once did for him during their ramen making session: listen and perform as he does. He won't touch any of the ingredients spread out for them, waiting for Senku's next set of instructions now that they had split teams.
no subject
"Wet ingredients first, we need..." Senku pulled out some smaller bowls. "So you're going to put a cup of water in there, two tablespoons of this yeast mixture I've got here, with two tablespoons of sugar and then just put it aside after you stir it so it gets frothy."
He instructed, before he started his own, musing. "I'm not sure I actually have enough pineapple, but it will be fine. It's still a pretty good snack, we'll just use the honey to make the dough a bit richer." It was a bit of an experiment on its own.
no subject
(Even though he still thinks tablespoons is an incredibly dumb measurement. Who needs so little of anything. Modern people, why are you like this?)
But obedient as he is, Inigo is already getting to work. A cup of water. Sure, he can do that. Here he is, already grabbing the water for them!
"Geez, Senku. You're always so confident about everything." Look at this guy! Experimenting with bread, and being like 'oh sure, it'll be fine.' It's a compliment though. With Inigo's natural insecurity, he finds it rather impressive. "Don't you think so too, Roland?"
VERY SORRY for the lateness! :(
"Definitely. I enjoy learning a thing or two from Senku. From how to make ramen noodles without using regular flour, and now a bread that'll keep for a long period of time. We've got a good teacher to help guide us, that's for sure." A glance to Inigo, watching him move too and readies himself to assist if needed. It's good to keep things light, for now.
Nothing to worry about!
"Baking's a bit more complex than cooking, but as long as the elements that need to be balanced are measured mostly correctly, it's hard to mess up the rest of it, and changing the flavours shouldn't do too much to it. Seriously, Francois drilled into me for hours how to do this, if I totally fail now they'd be really upset with me." He snickered lightly.
"Once we get this part done and the yeast is going, it'll be the dry ingredients. The only reason bread takes so long is the rising time. Not much we can do about that, since it's chemistry."
no subject
"Yes, I remember that." From baking with Taiki. It had been a pain, waiting for it to rise.. "But we can probably do other things while it's rising, right? It took a long while last time around.."
Also, don't mind Inigo just.. gently dipping a fingertip into his own jar of honey so he can put some in his mouth.. It just tastes good, okay!
But there is one more thing that's bugging Inigo. Just slightly, but even that slight bit is enough for him to lean over to Roland and ask-- "Bread can't really explode, can it?" He knows Roland wouldn't lie to him!
no subject
"Yeah. Had to wait a little while for the ramen noodle batch to get pliable enough to cut through. Guess we'll need to get creative with each other while it rises." Roland adds casually. No big deal! Plus, that's why they were talking like this too, right? Again, not a lot of details on Roland's end, only that Inigo needed him now. That's all the reason Roland needs to stay by his side, bread and all.
"How about we start with that, then?" This is some expert small talk maneuvering on his part, whoa! "Senku, can bread actually explode? Because if it can...then we're toast. Heh."
Get it? Now that's a bread joke!
no subject
"Bread can, though, if it's not scored properly burst through the crust and make a mess, if that's what you mean. This recipe isn't like that though, it's more of a mix between bread and cake, kind of, even if we're leaning more on the bread side of things."
He put his yeast to the side to cultivate and grow and get ready while he brought forward his bowl for the dry ingredients. He stopped though to make sure the other two were caught up to him.
no subject
But by the time he's grabbing his bowl as well, he hears what Senku is saying.
And that makes him freeze before he can even grab any of the ingredients.
"Wait, so some bread can explode?" Even if it's not in the typical explosion way, that's still wild! That thought is definitely reflected on Inigo's face too, giving the ingredients a wary glance.
no subject
"Not quite. He means that when you don't open up the dough before putting it in the oven," - which he hopes is a good enough explanation for scoring! - "It could, burst a little bit? And lose its intended shape?" He demonstrates with his hands, formed into a cylindrical shape that he expands as if melting unto the sides.
"That's what you meant, right Senku?" Roland turns to him, though fairly confident he understood that enough.
no subject
"Aside from making a mess in your oven there's not much dangerous about exploding bread, and this bread isn't going to explode so don't worry about it. I've made so much of this, I could be a professional. If the profession was specifically to make stollen." Senku chuckled.
"We had to make enough for ten months for about forty people."
no subject
But what's much more important than that is making sure to say--
"Hey, maybe you should just be clearer when something is a joke and when it isn't a joke!" Or maybe Inigo should be less gullible.
Either or.
He will gratefully take the flour from Roland though, starting to measure it out. He did it before back when he baked with Taiki, so this is something he can do well enough.
"A term like exploding bread is just unnerving! But I get it now. I think."
no subject
"In any case pup, we've got a master here. You heard him." And just because he can't help it, with the way the conversation is playing out...
"With Senku in charge of the stollen, we won't knead anyone else."
no subject
He snorted, Roland that was such a terrible joke his Dad would've made.
He passed out the little spice packets he had. "Put about a third into your flour, and a small pinch of salt. Then trade and give them back so I can dump them in mine." Was that a better measurement, Inigo?
no subject
But at least that seems to be one Inigo does catch on to, because it's easy to catch the smell of dad jokes from ten feet away. But you know what? He's a good enough son that he'll at least smile at it. There, Roland, are you happy now.
Don't mind him as he starts trying to get a third out of this packet without making it all spill out at once while he's talking.
"Well, Senku's just the one giving instructions! There's plenty of room for us to screw up still."
BUT NOT TODAY. Because Inigo manages to get an adequate amount of it before passing the rest back to Senku.
no subject
"Then it'll be a baking adventure. Maybe we'll even come up with a whole new bread recipe." There's always a silver lining!
Roland rotates the ingredients as Senku instructs, and follows the same measurements before the trade-off. A pinch of salt later, he nods and checks Inigo's station just in case. All good so far, nothing's going to happen here today kids.
Maybe. He also notices a smidge of stray flour on Inigo's cheek, which he tends to instinctively, raising a two fingers to wipe it away gently before returning back to the work at hand."Okay, wet ingredients now, I presume?" Roland asks, glancing at Senku. "I bet with all the fruit we're mixing into this, the kitchen car's going to smell amazing."
no subject
"Yeah, we're going to use about half a cup of milk and some butter to start." Senku explained. It was all set out already. "Then we're just going to add a bit more milk until it's a dough, to try and keep as much moisture out as possible because the fruit's already a bit wet."
Other recipes had eggs, but they didn't have that handy in the stone world so they adapted.
no subject
.. but that was just enough of a distraction that Inigo realises he completely missed Senku's instruction just now. And asking about it is sure to give him away, so his brain quickly kicks into gear, trying to think of another way out of this--
Right.
"Ah, Roland, why don't you show us how you do it first?"
GOT IT. No one will suspect a thing. Inigo can just copy what he does!
no subject
"Here we go."
Every things that's been mentioned is measured with frightening accuracy. He even holds some of the measuring cups to eye level, teaching Inigo that this would be the best way to see if your ingredients were exactly as they needed to be in quantity. Then, it's mixed dutifully, if not slowly, so Inigo can mimic him. Don't worry, dad's here!
Meanwhile -
"So, Senku. What's your favorite thing to eat? You're always around the kitchen these days. Ramen aside, I mean. Heh."
no subject
"Aside from ramen? Hm." He mused thoughtfully.
"Nothing else, I guess, I'll eat just about anything that won't kill me. If I'm going to make something I just use what's on hand. There's some good ingredients this month, lots of daikon and ginger. Also, I like spicy food." That, the train was lacking in his opinion.
no subject
Look at Roland. Isn't he the perfect dad? Going along with it so easily, not to mention that the way he does it is so thorough and clear that there's no way for Inigo to screw up as he's carefully replicating what he's seeing from Roland. He looks weirdly excited too. Not even as much about this whole baking process as much as he's just glad to have a train dad so willing to help him. Look, clearly Senku hasn't even caught on, they're that subtle!
(Just let him live in that dream, alright.)
If Inigo had a tail, it'd be wagging right about now. He does look like an excited puppy as he finishes up the last steps.
"So your favourite food would be something spicy?"
Inigo hums, thinking of what that would be.. It's not exactly like they had a lot of spicy food back in Ylisse, especially not after everything that went down there, so it's hard for him to imagine what a spicy dish may look like.
no subject
"How spicy are we talking here, Senku?" Roland throws in, while his hands busy themselves by his apron, wiping down flour and wondering if he should start the timer for half an hour for the yeast.
no subject
"The trick is to get it so you don't have big chunks of anything sticking out. To do that you have to knead it kind of quickly. Also, cut your dough in half so you get two loaves out of it."
no subject
It's probably better not to ask. It ought to be some weird otherwordly thing..
Besides, there's kneading to be done now. Quick kneading, Senku says, and so Inigo goes right at it. Kneading like a pro, max speed! (You'd think this would cause an accident eventually, considering the way Inigo just.. is.. but it's going fine so far, apparently.)
But of course Inigo can't completely keep himself from asking his dumb medieval questions.
"If there's hot sauce, does that mean there's cold sauce too?"
no subject
They're in the thick of working on the dough as he supplements the answer to Inigo's query, his hands carefully yet hastily folding back and forth like waves just as he was told. Chunky, indeed!
"Hm, not quite pup. But there are sauces that are meant to be cold, like certain dipping sauces, or those for salads." Roland explains smoothly. He enjoys it when Inigo asks questions, because it means he's interested in learning new things. Then he turns to Senku, a small smile on his face. "What's the most challenging thing you've had to make so far?"
