3 Kazoo - Adult Ballroom Social and Epic Kids' Game Night

Who: Everyone
Where: Wardrobe, Gym Car, Music Car, Games Car
When: 3 Kazoo, Evening
What: The much-awaited-and-discussed Adult Ballroom Social (and children's side event)
Warnings: None

You've seen the flyers. You've heard the announcements. You've ordered additional party reinforcements if you wanted them. Some of you have even helped her to prepare. And now it's finally here - the Adult Ballroom Social that she's been planning these many, many week-and-a-half.

But you wouldn't know it only took that long to throw it together. She's gone all out for this one. Including the wardrobe that's been opened up, there are four cars that have been set aside for tonight. The main ballroom floor is in the non-training gym, which has been cleared and decorated for the occasion. The music is being piped in from the music car, where it's still playing for those who would prefer a more intimate and private setting. Meanwhile, the game room has been set out for the kids who would otherwise be left out of this adult and near-adult event.

She's really here more to get to know her fellow passengers than to dance. So it's nearly the opposite of what she's observed with this person. "It's quite the event."

Dance party on a train definitely hadn't been on her to do list for the week. The fact that her to do list had a lot of steps consisting of ??? still didn't account for this.

Even dancing, Soldat sometimes needs a break from all the touching. So here they are, getting a break. They offer Hera a little smile. They've seen her about, so there's no staring, no Sarge making happy noises in the background about "aliens". "A lot fancier than I'd expected. But it's nice to dress up sometimes."

"I can barely remember the last time I dressed up." There had been jobs here and there. She probably owns formalwear somewhere. She never really likes those ones, she usually has to pretend to be too decorative. "But getting to know people is worth it."

It's been seventy or eighty years since Soldat got to really dress up, so this is definitely a treat. "Worth it? What, you don't like fancy clothes?" they say, maybe half-teasing.

"It usually means meeting with a certain sort of people." She looks around the room. These are the people she needs to work with. "This is very different from that.

"Ah, you more used to politicians and big money, maybe?" Soldat guesses, not without sympathy. They have... vague recollections of Steve complaining about that. Very vague, more of an impression than anything else. "Well, none of that here. This is just for fun."

"There are a few politicians that aren't so bad." And by that she means MOn Mothma and the Organas and do they really count as normal politicians if they're also the Empire's most wanted? "The rest of the big money... I don't like the way they look at me."

Which is why she went with a pantsuit despite their absence.

"Oh." Soldat makes a face, guessing at the way they might look at her. "I'm sorry, that's got to make this pretty awkward, then. I hope no one here is making you feel uncomfortable." They'll punch anyone who is, if she hasn't already.

"One thing to be said for getting pulled out of your home universe. It lets you escape certain preconceptions." On the one hand, she's the only member of her species and that's a strange feeling. But on the other hand, no one sees her lekku and starts making assumptions about her.

Re: Mingling

"There is that," Soldat has to agree. "Nobody knows your history. Or your species. Or anything. You can kinda start over." They have mixed feelings about that, themselves: a distinct lack of HYDRA or governments that want to lock them up is better than the opposite, but they've already started over so many times... they just want their people back.

But that's not going to help this gal anyway. "What's your name?"

"Hera Syndulla." Which isn't even on any wanted lists here, how novel.

"I hadn't been looking for a reason to start over." She has a cause she would die for a family she lives for. "But I'll take whatever bright side there is."

"Yeah, I did already have my start over, but I guess it's not bad here, either," Soldat allows. "I'm Soldat." And they're pretty sure Hera, at least, is not going to guess or understand what that word actually means, so they're comfortably safe from potential judgment. Aliens are nice, that way.

In Hera's experience, human names can range from Ezra to Wedge, so nothing really jumps out about 'Soldat'. "The crew here seem like good people so far."

It's a bigger crew than she would have bene used to a few years ago, but even that's changed recently.

"I haven't found very many bad ones," Soldat agrees with a nod. "Everyone's been pretty helpful and understanding. They know the value of working together."

"That's good to hear. I'd hate to be out in the field with a group pulling in too many different directions." Her crew isn't always of a single mind. No group of individuals ever is. But generally she can trust them and know what to expect. She doesn't have that here yet.

[personal profile] worthallthis 2021-03-15 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well. Red team tends to pull in a lot of directions," Soldat allows with a wrinkled nose. "Or they did last mission. A lot of people not used to working with other people. Or with pride problems about working with other people." So dumb. Soldat wishes they were even slightly leadership material, but even if they were, they're not actually on Red to step up. "But that's not your team. Purple is. Pretty organized."

"I've me that sort." She's had to get them to play nice as a team, even. "It almost seems like the two should be mixed in that case. Unless there's often call for a lot of lone fighters."

Re: Mingling

"You would think." They shrug helplessly. "So last mission I joined them. Did my best. But I'm not a leader, and I'm not really one of them. So." It went about as well as one could expect. They corralled those they could and kept watch where they could.

She took a sip of her drink. "So they weren't really in a rush to listen to suggestions." She shakes her head. "We've been trying to turn a bunch of separate uprisings into an organized movement at home. It's messy."

Re: Mingling

[personal profile] worthallthis 2021-03-22 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh shit, that sounds like. A lot of work." They don't frankly know a lot about that sort of thing, beyond trying to keep track of people in Beacon (and often failing). But it sounds hard. "What were you uprising against. Uprising against? Rising up against?" What is the correct verb there, man.

"It is. But the alternative is allowing an Empire that sees its people as things to be used and exploited to exist." Which is another reason she hasn't exactly been to an actual party for a reason other than meeting a contact in quite some time. A quick informal thing in a hangar bay, but nothing fancy.

[personal profile] worthallthis 2021-03-23 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"That. Does sound like a good thing to fight back on," Soldat agrees, thinking of HYDRA. "How's the uprising going?"

"No one ever said it would be easy." From the look of things it's going to get worse before it gets better. "But we're growing. Finding more people who can't just stand aside any more. It means the fighting gets fiercer, but we have a chance to make a difference."

Re: Mingling

[personal profile] worthallthis 2021-03-25 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
"I hope it works," Soldat says with a small smile. "There need to be fewer evil empires in the. Universe." They almost said world, but really, that's too small for what they understand about things now. Between the voidtreckers and Beaconites, there's far more than one world to worry about out there.

"My preferred number is none." That's why she was never content to just fight to liberate Ryloth, no matter what her father wanted. The whole galaxy needed help. "I've heard things here that give me hope for a brighter future."
