Day 19 - Time for a Wedding

Who: Lan WangJi, Wei WuXian and anyone else who wants to attend!
Where: Garden carriage and then gym car
When: Day 19 of Egret
What: Wedding! Wedding reception and lots of food.
Warnings: Pretty much up in the air. But there will likely a lot of PDA's from the wedding couple during the reception... because that's how they roll

Finally, it was Day 19, the day that WangJi and WuXian had chosen for their wedding.

Ceremony
Inside the garden, everything had been decorated in red and gold, traditional colors for a wedding in China. There were flowers and a low table set up.

As the ceremony begins, Lan WangJi and Wei WuXian enter with Lan Sizhui and Wen Qing as their attendants. The wedding clothes for WangJi and WuXian are also red, with designs of forest animals in the designs sewn in, including frogs and rabbits. All of this was courtesy of their friendly neighborhood spider. WuXian was also wearing a red veil over his hair and face. Even WangJi’s ever-present forehead ribbon was red today instead of white.

As the pair approached the table, WuXian on one side and WangJi on the other, they alternated bowing to each other three times before kneeling. With the help of their attendants, they each drank a cup of tea, which they used their long sleeves as though hiding that they were doing so behind them. Once they had put the cups down, WangJi reached up, pushing the veil back so that he could see WuXian’s face before removing the forehead ribbon he’d been wearing. Taking WuXian’s hand, he used to make kind of a loose knot between their two wrists, a Gusu Lan symbol that WuXian was his fated partner. Then as they carefully stood, WangJi leaned in to kiss WuXian before they both bowed to their attendants, thanks for assisting them and being there for them.

Reception
Following the wedding ceremony itself, the party then moved to the gym car, where the reception and feast were being held. Like the decorations for the wedding, it was also a lot of red and gold. To those who didn’t know beforehand, it would likely be obvious that red and gold here very important.

Lots of food cooked by wonderful volunteers from the train. Of course, there had to be dessert, which was the cake baked by the couple’s son, Lan Sizhui.

As the wedding couple, they were rather happily seated together of course. WangJi had since replaced the forehead ribbon on his head, but there was a high likelihood that sometime during the party WuXian was going to end up wearing it around his wrist.

It takes less than a second after he hears that compliment for his cheeks to faintly start turning pink. Apparently someone here is weak to compliments. He may have been smiling already a moment ago, but the smile turns into a wider and slightly dumb grin by now.

"Thanks. I mean.. not that I don't always look handsome!" Not such a great save after looking super touched at the compliment only a moment ago, Inigo.. "You're looking nice too though. Seems like he's scored himself a lucky date!"

Did she say anything about it being a date? Nope. Inigo's just assuming.

She blinks and steps back. "I am absolutely not Joss's date." She says, firmly. "I am not old enough." Date, in her world, means something completely different, and she will hold that line, hard. She's not old enough and won't be until she's sixteen. She doesn't plan on being here, when she turns sixteen. There isn't the proper facilities, firstly, and secondly, no one here could afford her.

"Do you have a date for the evening?"

That, in turn, makes Inigo blink in surprise as well. What, did he say something wrong? He'd be able to understand if it was because she doesn't like Joss in that way, or if she's embarrassed about the idea, but then she adds the part about her not being old enough and he's just super confused. Is there an age limit for dating? No one ever told him?

"Uh..."

It sure makes that last question confusing! Hence his hesitation in answering: "Y.. es..?"

He knows he has a date by his standards, but he's not sure if it fits in with whatever odd standards Misa may be thinking of.

"I'm here with my boyfriend, if that's what you mean."

She wonders what has him so flustered. She'd merely been firm about her escort for the evening. Both she and Joss were far too young for the implications of a 'date'. Plus, she refuses until she's sixteen.

"I didn't know you had a boyfriend." She says politely, deciding that explaining what a date means will just cluster Inigo.

Thank you for saving Inigo's brain that, Misa.. At least her only politely answering that seems to calm him down a bit. There's still a hint of something slightly more awkward than usually about him, but he smiles.

"It's a recent development," he admits. "I met him here on the train. And.. well, you know."

Inigo pulls his shoulders up into a shrug, the smile on his face getting a little stronger and more genuine.

"Might as well find some love while we're stuck here anyway, right?"

"Recent hmm?" She smiles. "I'm glad you found someone. Who is it?" They're such a small community that it's only polite curiosity. As for love.... Well, that's not for her. She's to be a courtesan. She's to be head of a House. Love can only get in the way and lead her somewhere terrible.

".. Thanks." Sure, he was already smiling, but there's definitely something extra soft in it as he thanks her. Inigo just thinks it's really sweet of her to say she's glad.

"I don't know if you've met him.. It's Yuki, Yuki Sohma. He has silver hair, and, uh.." He pauses for a moment, trying to think what else about him is recognizable. "Well, he's really sweet and polite."

She shakes her head, her complicated style not even twitching. "I haven't met him, no." She admits. "But if you're happy, that's good enough, right?"

She doesn't know. all of her relationship advice comes from romance novels. Don't take relationship advice from her.

Inigo certainly is happy - that much would be obvious even to people who are terrible at reading others. He seriously just can't stop smiling.

"I think so." And as long as Yuki is happy, but he's working really hard on making sure that continues. "You should meet him sometime though. He's really nice! And it can never hurt to have more friends on this train, right?"

She smiles, glad that he's happy. She knows that she'll never have something like this, but it's nice to see in other people. "Of course not. I'm sure I'll meet him, eventually." And will harden her heart and try not to be blind jealous.

"That's true. It's not as if this train is a very big place."

He smiles, completely oblivious as to her feelings. If he knew, he'd probably at least try to tone down the lovestruck puppy part of himself, but as things are now it's a lost cause.

At least it does put him into a good mood. Good enough to scratch the back of his head and say slightly sheepishly, "You know, you're pretty sweet. I'm sorry that the first time we talked was so.." He makes a vague hand gesture, probably implying 'odd' or 'awkward'. "I'm glad to have spoken to you again now."

He shouldn't ever dull his enthusiasm because of how she knows her life will turn out. She likes seeing it in other people. It's just Not For Her. And she's still a teenager, and a little jealous of that. She'll get over it.

Misa cocks her head to the side. "I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable. I'm coming to notice that it makes people... ill at ease if I speak of my life, sometimes."

"Oh.. Oh no!" He replies pretty instinctively, although he then stops for a moment. It's true that Inigo can't quite speak for other people, but..

"Trust me, it may not have much to do with you in this particular case. I am.." He hesitates. This isn't something he likes to admit, but on the other hand, he doesn't want Misa to just blame herself. "I sometimes get.. a little ill at ease when talking to people in general, if you know what I mean."

He's shy. He's trying to say he's shy.

Misa smiles and touches his arm, projecting calm and gentleness. "It's okay. Social skills are just that, skills. They have to be learned and practiced a lot before you get them right." She says, trying to be helpful. "And sometimes, it's not all that easy."

.. Geez. Here he is, confessing what feels like the most embarrassing thing about himself, and she manages to take it in with such grace. Inigo was fully expecting to be made fun of, really, and so her reaction seems to manage to surprise him for a moment before he smiles - flustered, but softly.

"Well, I like seeming more practiced than I actually am." If he's already admitted what he said before, he might as well add this on top of it. He trusts Misa, considering her reaction. "So we can keep this our little secret, right? Please?"

She smiles for him, because he's just so earnest. It's really nothing to be ashamed of. But, she nods for him. "Of course. A courtesan never reveals anything told in confidence."

"Thank you."

He sounds so genuinely grateful. Inigo may not be fully aware just how much of his awkwardness is on display to multiple people, hence why he still really wants to keep it a secret. And her wanting to keep his secret - well, it does mean a ton to him.

Hence why he smiles and continues: "And a friend doesn't do that either, hm?" Yes, that's his not-so-subtle way of saying he considers her a friend now.

She blushes. "I..." She stops, biting her painted bottom lip.

"I don't know?" She admits, softly. "All I know of friendship is from books and holovids." She says, lowering her eyes in shame. "A courtesan has many acquaintances, but no friends. It's too dangerous."

"Well.. I may not know much about how dangerous it'd be for you back home, but I don't think there's a whole lot of danger in having friends in this place. If anything, it'd do just about anyone good."

Especially if she hasn't even had friends before back home. Just hearing her say that she only knows friendship from stories makes Inigo's heart break a little. There's no way he can just leave her alone then. He's got to find a way to get some more actual friendship into her life.

"How about you allow me the honour of helping you put some of these things you've learned about friendship through books into practice?"

She doesn't know that this is such a good idea. Friends are dangerous, no matter where she is, because what happens when it's time for her to go home, and she has to leave them all behind? What then?

She eyes Inigo. She wants to let him, and senses no deception in him, but he can't know what it's like living as a courtesan. He doesn't understand - and that's okay - but she can't abandon who and what she is.

And that is what Inigo doesn't get. He's sweet, and she wouldn't mind having him as a client, but she can't risk it.

"I'm not sure I can." She admits. "I've been trained since before I can remember to be a courtesan. I... there are certain tenets of it, that I don't think I can leave behind." She's not saying no; she's just not sure.

The bit of hope left in that answer - just because it isn't an outright no - makes that Inigo doesn't immediately look awkward upon hearing it. It's always a little difficult to bear his heart and completely get shot down, after all. But that isn't the case here, so instead he just looks thoughtful, like he's trying to figure out what to say to that.

"That's.. understandable." Not that he can understand the whole courtesan business, but he does know it's hard to leave parts of yourself behind that are so ingrained in you. He has the same problem in a very different way. "But if you ever feel up to try, I will be here. It doesn't seem like I am going anywhere anytime soon."

She doesn't want to hurt Inigo. He's a sweet guy, and he really does seem to be so earnest about things. But friends? That's a step further than she's willing to take at the moment.

Misa smiles. "Thank you. For understanding." She clarifies, feeling like a weight lifted off of her. She's pretty sure that Inigo can't know how much his comment means to her.

"No problem."

He widens his smile. It's the tiniest bit forced, but since that part of it is so tiny, it's very easy to shove under the rug and make it seem entirely genuine. He wants to reassure her, after all.

"I should go to my boyfriend now before I keep him waiting for too long. You have fun at the wedding party."

She nods. "Enjoy the wedding." She says, waiting for Joss and Romeo.
