It was three days after the incident with the train and right at two weeks since they'd been allowed to get off this train and roam a new world. Sure somewhere in there, they'd had a brief reprieve involving a new platform and mess of newcomers, but that had hardly counted as a break from the train. So, the point was, they needed a chance to blow off some steam. What better way than organize a party and roll out the last of his ale to share?

He'd recruited Sarai and Maglor to play their harps and/ or sing for music; Ignis, Ash and Evie to make hors d'oeuvres, Dread and Peter to bring in some chairs; and rigged a lamp and some cloth to make a disco ball-like display in the room (which he made Peter to promise not to touch).

Now he just had to get the guests on the dance floor... to harp music? He misses 'regular' music. Sigh.

Was there someone behind her? Renee took a look over her shoulder--nope, no one there. Resettling herself, Renee couldn't help but squint.

"Did you get a whack on the head when the train lost gravity? You might want to get that looked at, y'know." As much as it was a snarky comment, it wasn't delivered with her usual biting acidity. She kind of felt bad for the guy--she wasn't actually asking if he were joking at her expense, at least.

Not that she really bought any of it. "Ninja clan, though? Aren't those mad, bad, and dangerous to know?"

Oookay. Why would she think that? Edge cocked an eyebrow, but shrugged mentally.

"Only if you're a servant of evil, a monster, or an enemy of our people. We're as dangerous as they come if you are. If not, we're valuable friends and allies."

Renee counted his comments on her hand. Servant of evil? No. She didn't even know his people, so that was also a no. But monster, though?

"Damn. I mean, a lot of people on my own world think I'm a monster, so I guess I lose this round. Can we not ruin the party, though? I mean every party needs a pooper, but I didn't want to be it, so..."

Renee wasn't usually the type to start brawls either--especially not in a place like this. But she didn't know this Edge dude from her elbow from a hole in the ground, so...

"You're objectively not a monster, since they attack heedless of circumstance, and yet here we are talking." Not deterred by what he'd concluded were efforts to play hard-to-get, Edge leaned against the wall casually.

"Maybe on your world." Then again, if they were really monsters, they sort of did the same thing on her Earth, too. Still, your average Joe American didn't like mutants and was afraid of them as a rule, so.

It was less 'playing hard to get' than skepticism and stubbornness. Dash of lack of interest and cynicism thrown in for flavor. "So what's your angle, then? That hard up in looking for a queen?" She hadn't missed the 'king' comment, and it didn't really strike her as a load of bullshit, to be honest. It sounded like the type of thing where he'd be trying harder, if he were.

"If trying to charm a lovely girl is 'hard up', then I accept the description gladly. Besides, you're sitting in the corner playing with a ball at a party, so I don't know which of us is the hard-up one..." Certainly she couldn't be doing so hot if this was her idea of excitement and fun with others.

"I'm not that great at parties, really." Or at interacting with people, as if this weren't exactly proving her point. "I don't drink, I'm not that great at dancing, I broke my wrist punching the conductor's cab, so..."

Renee snorted a bit, then. "I suppose I could do worse, but I think Pete's got me beat there." But Pete had a girlfriend. Then again, he actually probably wanted that sort of thing, where Renee felt she was probably better off without.

"You punched the train?" Flirtations on hold for a minute. What the? "I can understand frustration but that might not be the best way to say you're unhappy being here!"

"Well, Mr. Stark was pissed because the train had taken Gwen and he was trying to get into the conductor's cab with his suit. I was wondering if my powers would have better luck, but...nah."

Renee shrugged at that. "I mean, other than being a bit boring, here's about the same as anywhere else I've been. Though I'm kinda better off without my dad, regardless of where I am."

Wow, there's a lot to unpack there.

"So... we can conclude that the train can't be beaten up." That seemed like the right lesson to take away from this.

"Yeaaah, noooo." Renee replied. She shook her head a little. "At least the conductor's cab can't be, assuming there's a dude actually in there--which I doubt."

She shrugged, then. "I left finger marks on one of the grip bars in one of the passenger cars, though. But who knows? This train could be weird enough to heal itself." Stranger things have happened to her, after all.

"That would really be strange. The last thing I saw that could do that actually relied on external cores to manage it." Edge scratched at the back of his head, wondering just what he'd gotten himself into by being on this train. For something like the eightieth time.

"External...cores?" It was Renee's turn to be confused, now, since she'd never even heard of anything like that. Then again she'd never seen some of the weirder Sentinels, just the ones that were more like Robotech mechs, these days.

"You deal with stuff like that often?"

"Often enough! The Kingdom of Eblan practically lives in the shadow of the Tower of Bab-il, where such strange metal monstrosities reside!" Ordinarily, he'd brag that the ninjas of Eblan were an easy match for any foe... but those got an exception.

"That does...not sound fun. Weird. There are stories of a Tower of Babel where I'm from, but it's mostly known as the place where language was broken, so there were groups of people who couldn't understand each other any more."

She doesn't claim to be religious at all, but clearly, someone in Renee's family was. Or they were once, which probably means it was her missing mother.

"Not that it's a contest or anything, but it sounds like your world's almost more dangerous than mine."

"Oh, it's a lot tamer these days now that yours truly and friends --" He put a hand on his chest and lowered his head a little, utterly without modesty -- "put paid to the source of evil itself!"

"You're a hero, right?" Renee had the strangest look on her face, brows furrowing just a bit. "Isn't that like...your job?"

Because if she'd been allowed back home, she totally would've gone off and thrown down with bad guys. That's what heroes and superheroes and mutant heroes did, and she wasn't entirely certain she'd define herself as an actual hero at this point, but she didn't really want to hurt anybody, if given the choice.

"Ha ha, well, I try to be modest, but yes, I most certainly am." Suuure he does. "But it isn't only my job, it's my duty as King of Eblan! I'll protect my people even if that fight takes me to the moon!"

"That sounds like a load of junk, you don't seem very modest to me." Renee snorted at that. "Though to give you some credit, you do sound like you'd defend your people at least. And that fight took you beyond the moon, you know. I sure don't think your moon is anywhere near here--and neither is mine, for that matter."

Well, she had said she was bad at socialization...

"This one doesn't count, I haven't fought anything yet!" Right now this was more of an annoying diversion, even if it promised to be more eventually.

"Oh, you will. Not that I can't wait for that myself. It'll feel good to cut loose. Especially if I can." Renee hadn't had a chance to go on the last mission, and she'd had to be pretty careful when it came to the train and its issues when it basically broke down.

"Eh, might be cool to catch a glimpse of Ninja at Work." She'd never had a chance to see one back home, after all.

"Well, I'd certainly be delighted to give you a show any time you might so desire!" This is more like it, the conversation getting back to where it should be.

"Maybe on a mission? That'd work. And probably do some good." For other people, right? She wasn't sure how impressed she was, Renee wasn't. Not one bit, but she'll let him go. Edge seems mostly harmless, after all.

"Oh, more than just that, though I'd be delighted to work at your side. But what better way to fill the idle hours aboard the train than with good company?" Edge was feeling pretty good about this! He was on a roll, giving some of his best work considering the circumstances.

"I...guess? I never would've thought that I was good company." Mostly because of the trolling. Renee knows she's a pain in Tony's ass, but she kind of prefers it that way. She's made other folks deal with that, too.

"Mostly I do chores and then hang out in the gym...when it's not full of party materials. Gotta keep in shape, after all." Not that Renee's in bad shape, but she figures there's always room for improvement.
